Did Modern Warfare 2 Sell 7 Million Copies in One Day?

image

As data trickles in from the Modern Warfare 2 launch, early indications are that it has become the best-selling day-one title of all time ... but by how much?

Okay, okay, I know that all y'all are sick and tired of hearing about Mewtwo, but we can't deny that it's still newsworthy.

I remember way back in April, when Activision's Simon Wells said that he hoped Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 would be the best-selling game of all time. We laughed at the notion - of course it would sell well, given the popularity of the first game, but the best-selling title of all time? How absolutely preposterous!

Now, it looks like Infinity Ward - like a particularly odd and coincidence-happy bowl of alphabet soup - may be making us eat our words. Earlier today, we learned that MW2 may well have shattered Grand Theft Auto IV's day-one sales record in the UK by almost double ... and if it had doubled GTA4's sales in the UK, who's to say it couldn't double the game's sales everywhere?

In April '08, Rockstar's latest Grand Theft Auto set day-one sales records worldwide, amassing a combined 3.7 million copies sold in the first 24 hours. If MW2's success in the UK wasn't a strange localized phenomenon where the British went batsh*t crazy over a game starring Brits who weren't A.) fantasy heroes or B.) officers of the Galactic Empire, then Modern Warfare 2 could have sold up to 7.4 million copies in its first 24 hours on shelves.

In fact, that's exactly what game data site VGChartz says has happened. Now, right off the bat, I have to caution - VGChartz's numbers are essentially educated guesses based on the limited data that is available thus far, so let's not take these as gospel truth just yet. They're no more likely to get the numbers 100% dead on than they are to spell "Charts" correctly, but these figures are intriguing nonetheless.

If it turns out that these numbers are in fact correct, then MW2 has been more successful than any of us could have possibly imagined (especially the bitter PC gamers). According to their preliminary figures, total MW2 day one sales are in the neighborhood of 7 million, with 55% of those copies sold for the Xbox 360, 33% on the PS3, and the remaining 12% for the PC (or perhaps all snapped by Bobby Kotick himself, as long as we're wildly speculating).

VGChartz' numbers place 1.2 million of those sales in the UK (which we knew already), 4.4 million in the Americas (with the majority naturally sold here in the States), and 350,000 apiece in France and Germany. By my math, that only gets us 6.3 million, so I'm not sure where the other 700,000 sales would be coming from. Even so, that's a mindblowingly large figure. If this pace keeps holding up, VGChartz' estimates have the game selling 10 million copies worldwide by the end of its first week on sale, an estimated 5.5 million of which will be on the Xbox 360 - enough to make it the best-selling one-week title on any one platform (beating out GTA: San Andreas, which sold just shy of 4 million in one week on the PS2).

Again, none of this is confirmed, and it's only speculation. We don't know just how well the game's launch has gone, only that it seems to have gone really, really well. Do you wonder how the employees of Infinity Ward are sleeping tonight?

On beds made entirely of money, that's how.

Update: Looks like VGChartz isn't alone in this call - Broadpoint AmTech analyst Ben Schachter has extrapolated a 24-hour figure of approximately 7 million too, adding that "[w]hile 2x the week one tally for GTA IV may seem aggressive, the bottom line is that we believe current consensus estimates of around 12mm for the December quarter may end up being conservative."

No kidding. In fact, here's some fun trivia to put it all in context: StarCraft has sold 11 million units worldwide since 1998, a feat that MW2 may well equal in less than a month. And as Joystiq points out, the seminal Street Fighter II sold 6.3 million copies worldwide in total.

WOW, the greatest selling game ever.

Unfortunatly, I can't play the f*cking thing online. What the hell is up with that Infinity Ward?

What.
That's ridiculous.
People are just... wow. One good game in a series and the next one sells like hotcakes that dispenses massages and awesome ninja katana stuff?

It's just plain stupid.
I plan to rebel by maybe buying it before the 15th, haha!

There goes the neighborhood.

The neighborhood of gaming companies who believe in quality and community feedback rather than profit. But I guess you could argue that boat sailed back when Halo 3 came out. This just snapped the anchor line.

I take it you're on either the PS3 or Steam.

Steam has no explanation. The PS3 servers are run externally, and they are overloaded.

My thoughts exactly, sadly. Activision have already made their "Profit is all, screw fun" stance clear. They're certainly not going to change their mind if they're having such success with that method. I wouldn't be surprised if other games publishers begin to follow their example. Gamers are killing innovation in the gaming industry by continuing to support companies like Activision.

Thanks for explaining the PS3 issues.

I've been having a major sh*t storm over it all day.

that is what the campaign is for ppl if u cant play online actually try out the story line :P

Rest assured, one of those supposed 7 million ISN'T me. Why? Because Modern Warfare left a bad taste in my mouth and Modern Warfare 2 doesn't look appealing to me.

"Mommy Mommy I wants" - "Yes dear" - *hands money to unworthy developer*

New all time record. Hype= Win.

Let me correct you there, some can play it online. If you just look at the Steam forums you will see the mountains of people with problems and bugs. Myself included.

I just hope IW/Activison can put the champagne down for a couple of minutes and actually help the people that have paid to play.

I don't get what's so big about this, another will beat it's record in a few months.

Possibly a Nintendo Game?

Honestly, did you not expect this to happen?

I feel ashamed now for buying it and supporting the ongoing decline of gamer/company co-operation and relationship, downward spiral of caring video game companies creating innovative games, but, damnit, the online is fun and i need something to play with my friends.

I can't wait 'til Christmas.

I'm sure they'll set up stores just to sell MW2 by itself.

Assuming these numbers are accurate - and that is a fairly large assumption at this point, granted - the next highest selling game in history did half of what MewTwo did.

It's unlikely another game is going to take that particular crown soon.

Lol true, its just the total absence of any support on IW/Activsions behalf that is really getting to me. Those poor people at Valve must be getting annoyed with so many people blaming them.

Notice how these are UK sales records? As in, the test region for bumping up the price to see how it affects sales? I'm sure this will have a good impact on our wallets...

That boycott really did wonders, didn't it?

What actually happened in the UK is that the major retailers SLASHED prices, Sainsburys releasing the game at 26 as opposed to the suggested 55, then Morrisons followed suit and other retailers such as Amazon and Asda knocked it down to 32. Sainsburys released the game at the price of a budget title and cheaper then the current RRP for the first Modern Warfare, it was more like the cost of a couple of DVDs then a video game and as a result everyone FLEW in and took it at the lower retail before the prices go back up to the 45 - 55 mark.

I wasn't going to buy it until it became cheaper or hold out for christmas but at 26....... thats soooo cheap, on average UK wage thats like 2 - 4 hours work.

Yep, I'mma just stick to Dragon Age. I"ll get this one eventually, but not anytime soon.

That number will definately rise. MW2 is going to be released in Japan thanks to Square-Enix.

...Don't discount that possibility. You also missed "the bad guy" from that list.

Also, Sainsbury's slashing prices means that even I got it, and I was waiting out to get it preowned on principle. My roommate stayed up all night to get it at 7am for his 360. We like Sainsbury's in this house at the moment.

Faith in videogame industry dropping...

Yeah, it still didn't meet expectations though.

Hmmm, interesting. I wonder how a bed of money would feel. . . .

I could write a dozen pages over how disappointing this is. The games store I work at is a small independent outlet, and we almost never sell more than 8 or 9 copies of anything new. We sold 56 copies of MW2, but 8 Hardened Editions, Plus 5 Prestige Editions, Plus another 12 copies on the PS3, (We don't do PC).

Why? How? It's completely impossible to understand. We can all joke about how we all saw it coming, but we didn't. Not really. We knew the fans would buy the hype a little bit, we expected millions of sales. But the best selling game ever by a wide margin! Based on WHAT!

It looks the same as last time. It plays the same as last time. New perks? Death Streaks? They're little more than DLC. Don't tell me anyone bought it for the lousy 6 hours SP campaign?v And don't get me started on the level designs, which are as bland and uninteresting
as ever. I played this a for a few hours with my friends, but I'm glad it was their copy, not mine.

I don't see why people are going
"OMG MW2 DUD GUUD OMFG RAGE RAGE RAGR RAGRAGEGRGASFGASHFIU"
It's just a game people Christ, and a damn good one, stop having a sissy fit over it.

Well deserved, it's a cracking game, loving every minute atm.

I feel you, brother. Would have been awesome if my PS3 purchase included online that I could... y'know... actually play.

12 million? Really. Wow. All I can say - ridiculous. But... whatever. I'll just show my support to good developers instead.

And now Infinity Ward will not learn their lesson and continue to screw over the public...

You guys need to realize that CoD is all about the multiplayer. Who cares if the campaign is short? I haven't even played the single player yet. All that matters to me is that I was playing CoD4 regularly up until about 2 days ago. I've been loving every minute of MW2, which is basically CoD4 but with way more ability to customize buildouts, and with a new multiplayer co-op component. I have absolutely no reservation with paying 50 bucks for that. As far as the message that we're sending to the gaming industry, it seems to be: if you make an awesome game, with multiplayer that offers hundreds of hours of replay value, a lot of people will buy it. I'm okay with that.

BTW, I game on PC, PS3, and 360. I bought MW2 on 360 because I prefer the ease of use for Xbox Live. I know that all the PC gamers will look down their nose at me because of this, but frankly I don't care. Have fun boycotting every game that doesn't give you exactly what you want, I guess.
