Did Modern Warfare 2 Sell 7 Million Copies in One Day?

 Pages PREV 1 2 3 4 5 NEXT

I am happy with the game. Campaign is still too short for my liking =T Mutiplayer seemed to be good this time around though. Weeeell okay improved. But apparently its the best selling game...actually entertainment item ever. That includes movies and such. With a 4. *something* million in sales for the first day in the US and UK, nevermind Canada or other countries. Then the following week and such to have the people still trying to buy the game. I think it will be well into the 5 Millions? Possibly more.

Thats just insane I say. MADNESS. The game is very good but I still think other games deserve some better recognition. Still a fucking good game.

Great and they don't deserve it either.

They are screwing over the public with an excellent well designed game with a fun story mode? If that is the case Rockstar as well is also screwing over the public for making their games too enjoyable.

The whole issue is they had taken all online features that most PC gamers liked at the last second and said it was for the better when we clearly it fucking isn't!

There is an image somewhere that I would like to show you, everything they had changed for some strange reason, probably greed.

Possibly a Nintendo Game?

Assuming these numbers are accurate - and that is a fairly large assumption at this point, granted - the next highest selling game in history did half of what MewTwo did.

It's unlikely another game is going to take that particular crown soon.

Blizzard finds your lack of faith disturbing.

Oooooo, interesting point you have there.

That's ridiculous... Bobby Kottick must be jacking himself off with a fist full of 100 dollar bills.

Crunchy English:
I could write a dozen pages over how disappointing this is. The games store I work at is a small independent outlet, and we almost never sell more than 8 or 9 copies of anything new. We sold 56 copies of MW2, but 8 Hardened Editions, Plus 5 Prestige Editions, Plus another 12 copies on the PS3, (We don't do PC).

Why? How? It's completely impossible to understand. We can all joke about how we all saw it coming, but we didn't. Not really. We knew the fans would buy the hype a little bit, we expected millions of sales. But the best selling game ever by a wide margin! Based on WHAT!

It looks the same as last time. It plays the same as last time. New perks? Death Streaks? They're little more than DLC. Don't tell me anyone bought it for the lousy 6 hours SP campaign?v And don't get me started on the level designs, which are as bland and uninteresting
as ever. I played this a for a few hours with my friends, but I'm glad it was their copy, not mine.

I bought it for the lousy 6 hour campaign >_> .... I figure if I suck badly enough at it, I can draw it out to at least 8 hours, right?

I really am not surprised.... I didn't think it would do as well as it did, but considering my entire college campus was talking about it (no joke) I can see why it sold so well.

Too true haha. I thank you, you were the first person to make me laugh today.

Edit: darn it.... I double posted didn't I?

You mean you didn't see this coming? Possibly the greatest selling game of the decade? Who knows?

But I can understand why its selling so well, its a well balanced game with a decent storyline and balanced multi-player while at the same time providing a challenge.

Well, I just faith in the gaming community.

Great job guys! You just gave Bobby Kotick a reason to price gouge you and take away every good feature from online.

Enjoy your crappy little shooter.

My sarcasm meter is going off the wall.

Well, Starcraft is one of the highest selling games of all time; I realize that this is over the span of 11 years, but just think; most of those people who bought the game over those 11 years are going to buy SCII. And people who have never played Starcraft. And people who played Starcraft and quit.

And I won't even bother explaining Diablo III. :)

Shouldn't be. My comment was completely genuine.

You people do realise this is just the start. Next time we get an overhyped sequel with nice graphics it WILL outsell this!

No they screwed over the Multiplayer, I will not even mention the PC version, but no party chat on xbox? Now I have to listen to every 12 year old who thinks the Riot Sheild is the best gun in the game, yes I said gun, its a direct quote

Wait, I'm sorry, did you say no party chat on Xbox? So PC wasn't the only platform shafted. Well, cya guys, I'm off to play CoD 4, just like I did after World at War was released.

Nothing can be done about the changes they made seeing as the game has already been released. If people don't like the game because what Infinity Ward did to the multiplayer that is fine. But I don't see the need for people to get mad and call the game crap when it isn't crap.

God I hope Bobby Kottick chokes on his 10 thousand dollar caviar.

Well,I remember someone asking a few months ago which game would go down in gaming history. Here's your answer whoever asked, even if me and many others don't like it.

I also refuse to play a game that made by ignorant developers who believe that they know more than there community./rant/fanboyism/useless noise

That being said here's to hoping that some company that listens to there fan base blows this game outta the water..........some how.

Edit: I'm not insulting the quality of the game only the quality of Bobby Kottick's and Infinity Ward's souls.

Your right! Except Furioso didn't say the game was crap, he said they got away with screwing the public, and they did. Also the angry fans have been heard and letting the developers know this sucks has worked before, don't see why it wouldn't work now, no point on giving up.

I refuse to by the game for that reason, I don't care how many they sold, I believe this is wrong. It could have the best single player ever but I still don't care, in the end it is just your basic FPS war game so I don't feel like I am missing out on anything.

Infinity Ward got money in the bank(hell they got 70 bucks from me for the harden edition)

*Shrugs* The game is good. The single player is short, yeah, but it's exciting and they pack a lot of action into those few hours.

What's more the multi-player seems even more fun than the first game, no longer am I dodging martyrdom and 'nade spam all the time. Instead I'm checking overhangs and alleys to make sure that I don't breeze by some punk who wants to kill me. The new multi-player maps are suitably huge and engrossing.

I know it's fashionable to spread the hate jam thick on MW2 at the moment, but that doesn't stop it from being a good game.

World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lichking holds that title.

Damnit, this is really tempting me. Activision has been pissing me off lately and I don't want them to see a dime of my money, but damnit MewTwo is looking damn fine. I'll probably borrow it from a friend, but damnit if it doesn't look tempting right now...

Well, some of us are more inflamed than others, I guess. The game looks competent, and if that's what the people want, then bravo Activision for giving it to them. I don't see what's wrong with this, I moderately enjoyed Modern Warfare (not enough to buy it) and very much enjoyed World at War (more than enough to buy it), and it seems Activision continued in the trend of the Call of Duty series to make their next game even better.

I do fully intend on buying Modern Warfare 2 for my 360, as soon as my wallet recoups from Borderlands.

Sidenote: How many different versions of a game do you need, I mean jeezy creezy guys, I understand having a slightly more expensive version of the game with some additional content (Hardened), but fucking night vision goggles? That's a little extreme. I get that they're fully functional and all, but it's just kind of pointless to add a trinket that does nothing with the game. And I really don't think they justify the extra $90 you've got to drop on a Prestige Edition.

Life getting busy + getting sucked away from forums and games = fail
>.>
<.<

With that out of the way, I could see this being a possible reality. Not entirely probable (as I always know they inflate sales a little bit and round up/down, and this doesn't count the copies that were possibly pirated), but still possible. I mean, the buildup to Modern Warfare 2 was bigger than to Halo 2; I've been hearing about its existence for a few years now, basically starting just after the first CoD4:MW was released and soared the charts like an eagle on helium and crack. Videos, screenshots, TV spots, T-shirts, hats, bras (okay, that might be a little overdoing it, but I'm sure the MW2 ladies undies set exists SOMEWHERE!!) - if it could hold a logo and water, Infinity slapped its own onto it.

But 7 million is a big number to be throwing out, even if it is correct. GTA4 was a huge success (even if it a bit wonky in my opinion; I'm with Yahtzee on the bit about it being too "realistic and gritty"), and surpassing that in the first 24 hours... I guess its possible. One guy in my PC class actually brought in the edition that included the goggles, which, according to reports I've heard, actually work up to 300 feet, though they could have just gotten lucky with them; I'll have to ask him come this next Tuesday if his worked (personally, I would have locked it up in the trunk and have just talked about having it; then again, I brought in my Limited Edition copy of Dragon Age: Origins to class, so whatever).

However, back to the topic: those numbers just seem off to me. We'll probably be getting more accurate numbers in the next month or so, and then we'll know just how much they really sold. And chances are, it may be smaller than we were told originally, but I doubt it'll be by very much. MW2 is on the fast track to being one of the highest-selling games of all time, if these sales and hype keep up.

*trust me, if you think this was a long synopsis, you shoulda seen what I was going to write. be grateful >.>*

I believe that is a question best left unasked. Besides, do you really need to ask what hormone-driven teenage males will do with night-vision goggles?

EDIT: I'll probably buy the game for its single-player mode once #3 is announced (seriously, you don't think they will announce another sometime soon? though MW4 might get a name change), but I still doubt I'll ever touch online mode again >.< People are just total assholes to those new to something.

New all time record. Hype= Win.

More true than many people are willing to admit.

I guess we've all learned something today about the power of hype and advertising.

I just hope that MW2's success means they'll make fewer World War 2 shooters.

Not if you want to play using any kind of tactics, especially in Search and Destroy, among other objective based game modes.

Notice how these are UK sales records? As in, the test region for bumping up the price to see how it affects sales? I'm sure this will have a good impact on our wallets...

Well judging by the fact that shops like asda and sainsburys were selling it for 25-30, i'm not surprised that they sold 4 million copies or whatever it was.

And i'm sorry but what is with all of the naisayers on this thread. I for one, am going to stand up and say congradulations Activision. You have delivered a game of excellent quality, with an emotional rollercoaster of a storyline and with enough content and additional multiplayer to keep me playing for months. Well done.

And since when have games companies not been all about the profit? Emmmmmmmm..........NEVER!!!
Ever single games companies since the beginning of the concept have made games to make money, so please will people stop ripping on IW/Activision for trying to make more money, because I would do exactly the same thing in their situation and you know what? So would you.

PS: People keep on complaining about how IW haven't listened to the fanbase and they've screwed over the public, but i'm sorry, all of yous seem to think that you have some sort of ownership over the game before its released. No, sorry, it's IW's game, they can do whatever the hell they want with it, and you can't do a goddamned thing except to not buy it.

BTW, Bobmaster, most of this isn't directed at you, mostly to other people, the first point is in relation to you though.

Marlowe85:
You guys need to realize that CoD is all about the multiplayer. Who cares if the campaign is short? I haven't even played the single player yet. All that matters to me is that I was playing CoD4 regularly up until about 2 days ago. I've been loving every minute of MW2, which is basically CoD4 but with way more ability to customize buildouts, and with a new multiplayer co-op component. I have absolutely no reservation with paying 50 bucks for that. As far as the message that we're sending to the gaming industry, it seems to be: if you make an awesome game, with multiplayer that offers hundreds of hours of replay value, a lot of people will buy it. I'm okay with that.

BTW, I game on PC, PS3, and 360. I bought MW2 on 360 because I prefer the ease of use for Xbox Live. I know that all the PC gamers will look down their nose at me because of this, but frankly I don't care. Have fun boycotting every game that doesn't give you exactly what you want, I guess.

Well said man well said the game is fun to play. The campaign was not that good but who cares love the online play.

Turtleboy1017:
There goes the neighborhood.

The neighborhood of gaming companies who believe in quality and community feedback rather than profit. But I guess you could argue that boat sailed back when Halo 3 came out. This just snapped the anchor line.

Oh yes, because the game is sooo bad.

Its actually incredibly fun. Story wasn't amazing, but the Gameplay is top notch.

I can understand if you aren't a fan of the genre, but atleast play the damn game before you write it off as a failure.
