First Screenshots From Fallout MMO?

image

Polish website Polygamia.pl claims to have gotten its hands on the first batch of screenshots from the Fallout MMO.

According to Polygamia.pl, the collection of shots were submitted as evidence in the court case between Interplay and Bethesda on which company owns the rights to make such a game.

The seven shots on Polygamia.pl are a mix of screenshots and concept art and they depict a bleak post-apocalyptic world, which is expected. There are no details shown of the user interface or actual gameplay, so it is hard to determine just how far along the design process is. I assume that these shots were brought before the judge to back up Interplay's claim that yeah, we're working on it. See?

It is unclear how Polygamia.pl acquired the shots, or why the name of website sounds as if it is about being married to multiple partners.

Let me be completely clear, these shots could be fake. They are from an unfamiliar source and, if they are from official court documents, I question how a heretofore unknown Polish gaming website was able to obtain such highly sensitive materials. That being said, they seem to be at least well-made fakes and match up with previously seen concept art.

Are these screenshots real or cleverly made facsimiles from Eastern Europe? You be the judge.

Looks like a low-res kinda thing, sorta Online + Alpha + Early... I'll buy their story

Interesting

How would VATS work?

Excuse me sir. I was just wondering, may I be the first to call bullshit?

Well great, another way to screw up the series.
I hate to sound cynical, but a Fallout MMO is a terrible idea. It's the exact opposite of what Fallout is: A lonely, dark struggle to survive in an unforgiving nuclear wasteland. This'll just open the doors to dance parties in the middle of 'town', people yelling 'LF1M HEALER FOR GLOW!' and other nonsense.
A terrible terrible idea.

What does VATS have to do with anything? That was a gimmick for Fallout 3, not a staple of the series.

I don't care who owns the rights to this, they must make this game. I've never played MMO but this would be the exception to the rule, should it ever be made.

It's probable. Bethseda is good at RPGs, all they'd need to do is add an MMO to it

May I call Shenanigans?

This can't end well. Its just an attempt by a dead company to try and milk some cash form a famous ip.

Interplay is making it.

And they're caught in the middle of a legal battle with Beth that they are unlikely to win.

A gimmick that Interplay was never involved with either.

Honestly, the charactrer models look like they could have been done with a Fallout 3 mod in 3rd person view.
Anything looks good without animation, you know?

I'm hopeful, though, and this actually looks not bad. Environment is nice though.

Fallout shouldn't be a MMO :(

But vats was the turn based gameplay from the first 2 games coming back in an fps reinvention.

Call me crazy but doesn't that just look like fallout 3, with a slightly moved camera, on a low graphics setting and no hud? Can't you make that on the pc version of fallout 3?

Baby Tea:
*snip*

Because a few people might enjoy the idea of systematically crippling an opponent by choosing shots at various body parts in a tactical interface that mirrors the basic combat of the first two Fallout games, and therefor associate it with the series as a whole?

I do however agree with the rest of your statement, that seeing "LF1M Glow" would chill me to the very soul.

OT, I'm kind of surprised that no one has automatically assumed that the artwork in question isn't related to Wastelands, or even Fallen Earth, considering how much we seem to be bombarded with imagery from that particular title... over... and over again... Seriously, when the fuck did (poorly done) retro/steampunk post-apocalyptica become the new flavor of the moment?

Right. Like I said: a gimmick for Fallout 3.
It was just called 'aiming' in Fallout 1 and 2.

And then, to try and make Fallout 3 look like a fallout game (Can you tell I'm biased?), they added in the 'pause and shoot' gimmick of VATS.

Why can't Interplay and Bethesda just share? That would make fans happy. That's what I learned in school.
But, it is buisness after all...

I'd probably buy it if they can make it work, both gameplay wise and buisness wise.

I suppose :P fallout 1 and 2 were good but i still found 3 more immersive

Lord have mercy on our souls.

Fallout Online: A New Hope

GrinningManiac:

How would VATS work?

Probably not.

They're not actually doing a Fallout MMO are they?

Can nothing be single player anymore?

And that screenshot is fugly.

Post-Apocalypic (sp?) dance party? That'd be kinda cool.

I'm the one who posted these screenshots, both at Polygamia (a Polish gaming site where I work) and at The Vault (Fallout Wiki), which I founded. They were also independently posted at Duck and Cover, a Fallout fansite that acquired them independently. Both the screenshot and the concept arts were submitted by Interplay to the court as evidence that the game is in full production. I was sent the court filings of both Bethesda and Interplay by a trusted source.

You might not know me, but some of the regulars here probably do, if they are members of the fan community, and know that I can be trusted on these matters.

Yes, he can.
Ausir knows what he's doing.

Ugh... I hope this is bullshit.
It's hard to feel alone and vulnerable in a post-apocalyptic environment when you've got a billion dolts constantly clogging up a chat screen in the corner with duel requests, guild invites, and begging for help with a quest.

I think if Bethesda wants to make an MMO they should create an entirely new universe and not mess with the ones we are already firmiliar with.

Man I would love a Fallout MMO! All the way through I was thinking how cool it would be to have all the main characters in the wastes as real players, ofc like the Brotherhood and Enclave as human players but also Dave Land too.

It's being made by Interplay and Masthead, not Bethesda. See:

Yes, but since Fallout 3 is the newest, and this is in 3D (and fairly similar-looking to Fallout 3), I think it is more likely than not that VATS would be included in subsequent sequels, and that this game might include it

Also, I don't know whether it's the emotionlessness of text, but your response came across as very stand-offish

I don't like that

Interesting

How would VATS work?

Simple, there won't be Vats. It really can't work in a real time MMO.

the idea of a fallout mmo is just stupid. Even with only the small population of FO3 it was difficult to believe the wasteland could support them, there was any ammo/food/medicine left, etc. With the population of an MMO, even in a much larger gameworld, it would be impossible.

Not to mention the loss of the whole 'lone wanderer' feeling, when you were bumping into other players continually.

Sure, I don't like the idea of destroying the original concept of: opening into the expansive wasteland, being one man against the entire world, with everything to lose, and the only thing you can trust is the steel in your hand.

However, Fallout is STILL the perfect setting for an MMO. I think that the biggest problem that this board has is that they fear such radical change.

There are races, professions, monsters, levels, and a deep storyline. Best of all, there aren't any MMOs with a similar setting. As long as it at least has a graphical level close to Fallout 3 (obviously sacrificing some graphical power so it can run on many different computers), the producers have the money to keep it running, and Bethesda is okay with it, it can't lose.

Besides, the world needs to repopulate somehow.

Here's what Chris Taylor, lead designer of Fallout 1 and Fallout Online said:

I've seen some discussion here and there about how many players is anti-Fallout (or, more generically, anti-post-apocalyptic). I'd disagree, of course, otherwise I wouldn't be involved in V13. There are plenty of precedents for grouping and social organizations. Even the Road Warrior had allies during his cinematic adventures. In Fallout, NPCs were always available to join your group and there were plenty of social organizations that had a number of members.

My vision includes the lone wanderer, erm, wandering through the wastes and a team of individuals working together for a common goal (like getting a truckload of fuel past some raiders). In any MMO, there will be times and places that have more people than others (social centers vs. instances, for example). It won't be all of one at all times

Prons:
It's probable. Bethseda is good at RPGs, all they'd need to do is add an MMO to it

I played Oblivion for 20 mins then went looking for the Online option. There was none. I was shocked. I thought, "this could be that awful turdefest WoW." So I checked out Guild Wars instead.

Great decision. Even though I play EVE now. I hate elf games.
