Square-Enix Japan to Make Deus Ex 3 Cinematics

image

JRPG house Square-Enix will be putting its cinematic department to work on the recently-acquired Eidos' upcoming Deus Ex 3.

Gamers and the gaming press have been poking fun at the acquisition of UK-based Eidos Interactive by Japanese publisher Square-Enix for almost a year now, ever since Squeenix first expressed interest back in December. The merger seemed rife for parody, with Eidos' Western-style heroes like Lara Croft and JC Denton a far cry from Square-Enix's protagonists with a decidedly Japanese aesthetic.

According to Eidos Montreal general manager Stephane D'Astous, the studio's upcoming sequel to Warren Spector's beloved cyberpunk FPS/RPG Deus Ex will be the first "concrete product of joint effort between Square Enix and Eidos" since the merger, with the JRPG giant putting its experienced cinematics department on the game's pre-rendered cutscenes.

"The cinematics-by which I mean any CGI pre-rendered cinematics - are going to be done in Tokyo by Square Enix, and that's going to be amazing," said D'Astous. "It was in April when Square Enix acquired us, and by June, July I was trying to think of a project we could do together. One morning I woke up and I said, we'll, they're known for their cinematics, so why not get them involved with those?"

Though neither company has said how many pre-rendered cutscenes the game will include, we know that - at the very least - Squeenix's movie-makers will be in charge of the game's introduction movie as well as the trailers. Beyond Deus Ex 3, though, D'Astous said that the Square-Enix cinematics department was thrilled at the chance to get to work on a non-Final Fantasy game, and had expressed interest in tackling the upcoming Thief 4 as well.

While I'm sure that the news has some Deus Ex fans panicking over their suddenly-bishonen cyberpunk heroes, I'm not sure that there's all that much to worry about. It's hard to imagine that this means the cinematics will suddenly be designed by Square-Enix; the Tokyo-based studio will just be in charge of putting them together. In other words, it's unlikely that Tetsuya Nomura will suddenly show up and make the call that JC Denton needs to be wearing more belts and zippers. Though I guess it could still happen.

If it did happen, my guess is it would be in revenge for Eidos' crappy PC port of Final Fantasy VII.

Thank God! One of the reasons why Final Fantasy and... every JRPG really, sucks (IMO) is because of the ridiculous design of everything. That has no place in Deus Ex. Not sure how much faith I have in it being a good game anyway, but I hope... If it only turn out to be half as good as Deus Ex. That would be sweet.

NO! YOU SHALL NOT PASS!

Seriously Square Enix keep to your gender confusing jrpg's and stay out of the west...

Yes, because western games never have a ridiculous design philosophy. No, not ever. People's shoulders really are this wide.

And I haven't even touched on any of the stuff the Star Wars or Star Trek series comes out with.

I just Hope the J stays away from the RPG in this case. If they fucked up my Baby, my Deus Ex, I would lose all faith in the Japanese, of course that is without including Hentai and rape games.

What does that have to do with the design of things in Deus Ex? Deus Ex is supposed to look realistic. Which mean they cannot use any of the normal JRPG designs.

And I would take any of those designs over anything in most JRPGs. Why? Because I don't like the spiky-hair, clothes and armor that barely covers anything and probably would fall off if it existed, over sized weapons (though that one is cool now and then if the weapons look decent. Which they usually don't) and the whole smooth and shiny skin every character has.

No matter how ridiculous the design is, the western one is more realistic.

Ah yes, a pinnacle of realism in Deus Ex

Also, "armour that barely covers anything", what, you think that suddenly the West is a pinnacle of all things chaste? I get the feeling that's not quite the case.

It won't be the Japanese that fuck this up, the game designer had that covered before development began.

Jean-Francois Dugas (talking about Deus Ex):
There weren't enough exciting, memorable moments. It was aimed more towards a simulation rather than a game experience.

Oh yes, a futuristic weapon in a sci-fi game... totally unrealistic.

Good job pulling out a game I already hate.

But you know, I never said everything in western design was better. But I did say that most JRPGs have stupid designs. Nothing you say will change my opinion on that.

Anyway, on topic again:
I think the cinematics might turn out pretty good, as long as they only put them together. They know how to make good looking cinematics, stupid designs and cliches aside.
But seeing how they haven't even started making the cinematics, I bet we won't see DE3 any time soon anyway.

Nice burn on pointing out the more crazy western designs.

Anyway, this makes me intrigued... although I should probably get my ass in gear and complete the first Deus Ex before this game comes out, but if it's anything like what I've seen so far in the first game, it's going to be a must-have.

I'm not worrying about bishonen Denton. I'm worried about how they seem to be missing the point of the first Deus Ex. I don't give a shit about prerendered cinematics, I want the actual game to be good and flexible!

It's a shame Square-Enix isn't doing the designs for the games.

I think some of you are arguing a preference for style as a sense of taste. Wolverine has claws growing out of his wrists and hair like Dr.Wiley, he often wears a yellow/blue(or brown) body tights with fins. He fits in the superhero genre. I wouldn't expect to find him in Blade Runner but he is still a good design.

Square-Enix has some highly competent artists. Say the Nomura crack in the title on belts and zippers, his Kingdom Hearts characters were purposefully designed for that particular audience.

Looking at other designs he's done...
FF7, the turks

Guys in suits.

FF7 Barret

a burly man with a cybernetic arm.

and the entire Parasite Eve series, which takes place in the modern day world with plain clothes... which was more popular in Japan, as America only likes the big hair big weapons craazy zippers games of Square-Enix hahah

He's only one of many artists with Square-Enix too.

compare his designs to what actual fashion has been worn

It's nothing abnormal

No good can come of this.

Oh thank god. Square Enix needs to stay the fuck away from Deus Ex 3 if there is to be ANY hope of it turning out good. Sadly, I think it'll end up crap at the end anyways, but maybe we'll be lucky and the Gods of Gaming will reward the faithful with a grand Deus Ex sequel.

*sigh* Yeah. It'll probably be another genre mindless shooter with a Deus Ex theme. I only hope we are wrong and its a true sequel to Deus Ex.

Edit 2: God damnit, this is depressing; we've a design company who thinks Deus Ex (1) was 'borrrrring', Square-Enix doing the cinematics, so we'll have 20 hours of pre-rendered cutscenes per hour of gameplay, and the average gamer is more interested in graphics over gameplay....

*sigh* Deus ex, you will be missed.

So long as sexually ambigious pony tailed people aren't the majority of characters, I'll count that as a win towards the remote possiblity of Deus Ex ending up good. But as had been said before in this thread, Deus Ex 3 is already causing us fans concern because the lead designer has made it pretty clear he didn't like Deus Ex (1) and is more than likely to reduce it down to another Generic Halo-eski Clone.

Meh, let me know when Warren Spector is working on it again. That's about the only possible saving grace of the series.

Re-read the article carefully, it says;
"While I'm sure that the news has some Deus Ex fans panicking over their suddenly-bishonen cyberpunk heroes, I'm not sure that there's all that much to worry about. They are making them based around the pre-existing planned development and designs. It's outsourcing like with animated tv shows like Simpsons or Family Guy, made in America but all the animation is done by Korean animation companies.

Ya'all frettin over nothin.

Am I the only person who noticed the Thief 4 part?!

Anyway, all they are doing is the cinematics and lets face it, outside of Crysis, the Final Fantasy games have had the best graphics of the time so this can only be good.

It *is* a bit different because Square_Enix actually outsources part of its CG cutscenes production pipeline to various companies around the world already, and has done so for quite some time(like, in FF9 the scenes in Lindbulm were done by a french company), and so the bits they still do in-house are design and direction. Which means if S-E is involved then they'll be at least involved in the hi-res character redesigns necessary for the cutscenes.

That's cool, just keep them away from the chuffing plot!

Spaceman_Spiff:

I noticed that too, please let it be so!

I am glad to hear that a decent company is in charge, and i look forward to Deus Ex 3.

Ya know half the people in this topic are so stupid it makes me ashamed to be a gamer

You know who you are.

Also don't care just make the game good.

Cool: the cinematics in FF games have always been one of my favorite parts of the series. They know their stuff.

Sadly this is more or less what I expected.
