Ever wonder why Nintendo's iconic Italian mascot has so many games under his belt? It's because a young Shigeru Miyamoto designed him with that goal in mind - well, sort of.
It's no secret that Mario gets around. Some days, he's off rescuing princesses from the clutches of Bowser, other days he goes go-karting or hits the links for a round of golf. From his humble beginnings as Jumpman in Donkey Kong, he has become one of the world's most instantly recognizable characters, to the point where many feel he's becoming a bit overused. But according to a chat between Nintendo's legendary Shigeru Miyamoto and the company big boss Satoru Iwata - discussing the history of Mario in the wake of the release of New Super Mario Bros. Wii - that was the entire point of the character when Miyamoto originally thought him up:
Iwata: So the entire design was a case of form being dictated by function. You can really see that your specialist field, industrial design, is evident in the final result. Then, because he jumped up and down, he became known as "Jumpman", right?
Miyamoto: Well, I called him "Mr. Video". My plan was to use the same character in every video game I made.
Iwata: So you had that plan right from the start? Why did you intend to use him in every video game you made?
Miyamoto: Well, I thought the way Hitchcock cropped up in all the films he directed was really cool! (laughs)
So there you have it, folks. Shigeru Miyamoto wanted a character he could use in every game he ever made, though thankfully he apparently (mostly) changed his mind - in that regard and on the character's name.
I actually really enjoy these little chat sessions between Iwata and Miyamoto, because not only do they give the two Nintendo bosses a chance to display a bit more humanity and personality than they might get through simple interviews and statements, they always reveal some really interesting stuff about gaming's most storied franchises.
For example, did you know that Donkey Kong was originally designed as a Popeye the Sailor Man game (presumably with Popeye as Mario, Bluto as Donkey Kong, and Olive Oyl as the damsel in distress)? How about the fact that the plumber (well, carpenter in Donkey Kong) couldn't even jump at first? Or that Miyamoto originally wondered if he could patent the idea of a game in which the character jumped, and that Mario 64 was originally designed with a multiplayer component?
I have no problem with a lot of games being released as long as the quality remains the same. I hated Galaxy and haven't played a Mario game to best Mario 64 yet. So I am getting a little concerned.
Still, perhaps when Nintendo decide to increase the capabilities of the Wii we may see some truly innovative things come from Mr. Miyamoto.
Furburt: Shigeru Miyamoto follows some sort of logic known only to himself.
But I kind of love it. He's like everybody's crazy uncle whose particular brand of insanity is tinged with genius.
That really makes you think. What kind of crazy uncle would a monkey's uncle be?
Anyway, it worked for Hitchcock, not so sure about Miyamoto and Mario. Though I'll admit Mario is very successful, and I do love that crazy plumber. Maybe Miyamoto really is a genius after all :D.
Mario and link are staples of Nintendo theres no reason why there should be a bajilloin of them.... but still I am waiting for a proper SMB3/SMW in 3D game....
That is... surprisingly interesting. o_O I was not expecting to read anything special here, but the little bits at the end fulfilled my desire for "awesome useless information."
The reason I thought up was because Mario just friggin' sucks as the head of the Royal Bodyguards of Princess Peach.
However, I also suspect Mario collaborating with Bowser so he can keep kidnapping Peach, simply because Mario has a "damsel in distress" fetish. Dirty ol' plumber.

Stan Lee and Stephen king usually do the same thing (but I think SK may have missed one). Heck even in Marvel's Super Hero Squad Stan Lee voices the mayor. (don't judge until you actually watch it)

Since the Mario universe isn't held down by any sort of logic, and focuses purely on addictive gameplay, it makes sense that he's a character that can appear in almost anything.
Dude, I remember that Popeye game. Either someone else ended up releasing it, or that was their original product...
As a kid, my cousins gave me their whole bin of Nintendo games and their NES - that was one of the games that came with it. I recall it resembling Donkey Kong, but I totally sucked at it, and stuck to playing Mario Bro.s.
CabooseKill400: And I thought it was because eh hem "IT PRINTS MONEY BITCH".
This is what my cynic believes as well. While I like to believe that it is a weird bit of personal logic, it just seems like lazy design since there isn't much story evolution...

I am perched otside your house a sniper rifle in hand, the shope is aimed at your knee-caps.
You have as long as it takes me to blow your limbs off to contemplate that crack about 3D side scrollers.

Have you even played it? Or watched vids of it on Youtube?
I don't exactly get what is so fail about it. It doesn't use the Wiimote that much (plus), it's a damn sidescroller! (it's about time. No tennis, no soccer, no shovelware style spinoff) AND it has new powerups, some of which work really well.
I'd say give it a try at least. Even from someone like me who hasn't liked Nintendo's direction these past years, this is such a step in the right direction.

Side scroll=done to death=boring=FAIL! Kinda like 3rd person where the butt is in the middle of screen and controls are crap...... but not as annoying.....

Go for the thumbs, I find side scrolling as boreish and poorly implemented as 3rd person :P

There's all that and a ton more on the Wii website.
