Call of Duty Hits $3 Billion

image

Activision's Call of Duty franchise has passed the $3 billion sales mark.

Acitivision has announced that the Call of Duty franchise has passed three billion dollars in global sales following the release of Modern Warfare 2 and it's estimated $550 million in sales in its first week. Acitivision also said that the franchise had sold over 55 million units since its creation in 2003.

"If you consider the number of hours our audiences are engaged in playing 'Call of Duty' games, it is likely to be one of the most viewed of all entertainment experiences in modern history," said Acitivision boss Bobby Kotick.

With Activision rumored to be adding a third studio to the development team, it seems that the juggernaut that is Call of Duty is in little danger of slowing down.

Can you hear that? That's the sound of Bobby Kotick jerking off with a handful of 100 dollar bills.

The word is "Preposterous".

Well, hooray for Infinity Ward. In my personal opinion, they've earned every penny!

And let me just clarify my position as a gamer by saying that Activision didn't earn any of it!

Three Billion?

Psh, that's chunk change.

Wow, Some bad series rake in money, but this is preposterous, and if it wins game of the decade, I for one, am going to be pissed off.

Shut the fuck up Kotick, your the last person I want to hear commenting.

aall i can say is lol. On one hand its cool that it has made more money than every hollywood movie out there( I love some movies but i want games to be atleast as dominant) but on the other i hate games which are overhyped. ITS a GOOD GAME BUT THERE ARE BETTER GAMES OUT THERE!

And the hate continues.

OT: Nicely done Infinity Ward, keep em coming.

The game is good. IW can't help their boss is an asshole. They made a great game and i'm glad they're suceeding.

Three Billion?

Psh, that's chump change.

*Fixed.

I hope very little of that went to Infinity ward *Rages at MW2 in my mind*

Hollywood: if you are not afraid, you should be.

Jesus, even EA fell short of that target, and their the biggest carbon copy game launcher I have heard of.

That was less of a fix than a cocaine addict putting a shitload of sugar in his coffee.

Chunk Change > Chump Change.

Chunk Change > Chump Change.

That analogy made no sense...

But beyond that, what on earth is "Cunk Change" also in the way you were typing it you were saying like "Pfft that's nothing", and thus I thought you meant "ChuMP change" from which would fit marvelously in your sentence.

I assumed you had a typo O.o

Good for Infinity Ward, but...

This just shows that most people don't care about things originality or artistic direction in games, it's a shame that more creative games will be lost in the shadow of generic war games like MW2.

Dear Escapist,

The fact that Call of Duty is successful is not news. I love you, but please please please stop pretending anyone cares. Everyone is firmly rooted in their camps, the people who are disappointed with mankind, and people who are addicted to an excellently produced but mundane-in-concept shooter.

Your eternal friend,

Good on them. The Call Of Duty games are great. Though I hate the money going to Activision, but IW deserves the money.

No doubt one of the most played video games ever. Just goes to show people prefer the "kill stuff with guns" genre than others.

I think this could be chalked up to "Marketing > all".
I watched the campaign played on the latest version, wasn't that pleased. Multiplayer... there's a disconnect in feeling when you play it. It doesn't actually feel like you're killing someone, just that you're knocking over a duck at the fair with an air gun.

I played MW1 and COD5. I can see why the games have become popular, espcecially with MW. I just hope that future games can have content that live up to the amount of hype the ads dish out.

If you consider the number of player hours spent playing counterstrike this looks small fry. If you consider the number of hours spent playing WoW, counterstrike looks small fry. Fuck off Kotick.

$3 billion? That's insane. I'm flabbergasted. I think I just don't like shooters and will never understand the universal draw. (they all feel the same to me)

Well with 6 games in the Franchise it would bea kind of a let down it it was lower.

Actually, I think that half a billion dollars per game is pretty amazing going.

Sure the genre of FPS is generic, but the Modern Warfare series is at least refreshing in the sea of WW2 FPS's.

And think! Bioshock 2 is coming Febuary! Pitch a tent a grab your Assault Rifle! You are one of the many waiting at the Bioshock 2 midnight launch! Including me!

Blasphemy!

A lot of that money should be going towards IW.

..stupid Activision <.<

The fact that it is successful isn't news, but the fact that it made $3 billion is. Just because you don't care doesn't mean no one else does. If you don't give a shit then just don't comment.

damn I want some of that money

Wow, well, Infinity Ward earned it, those are some fine games. Bobby, please, don't open your fat mouth in public, it makes others feel uncomfortable.

Oh man, I can't wait! I really think that it will be better than it's predecessor and the multiplayer looks terrific.

The only FPSs besides BioShock 2 that I'm looking foward to playing are Call of Juarrez: Bound in Blood and Singularity.

Gamers: FUCK ACTIVISIOOOOON!

*proves them right*

I think that even with all of the let downs for the PC community, MW2 will be the last good CoD game. It seems that they will probably turn into a money hungry demon and shit it all up.

So shall i. Call of Duty doesn't desere these awards.

Your not alot...your not alone

IW should separate from Activision and become their own company.
