Celebrity Endorsements They Wish They Could Take Back

Celebrity Endorsements They Wish They Could Take Back

I'm not sure I like the amount of enthusiasm which Phil Hartman exudes in a commercial for an Atari game. I love it.

Actor Phil Hartman went on to bigger and brighter things before his untimely demise, but his best celebrity endorsement wasn't for Wilson Countersink Flanges, it was for Activsion's Ice Hockey on the Atari 2600. Ice Hockey was released in 1981, so this commercial was probably first seen in that year.

The shopkeeper strings Hartman along like he's a Stradivarius, inciting a impressively crazy outburst of desire for the pixelated hockey violence. You have to respect Hartman for putting the extra juice into his performance, especially the title card at the end where it sounds like he's shilling the game with his last mortal breath.

Also, I'm glad that game stores have upgraded over the years. I'd rather purchase games from a GameStop, if you can believe it, than go into the wood-paneled meth-lab hole in the ground that this guy appears to be operating. Sadly, that is how most games stores actually appeared in the 80s but, as with the Holocaust and Showgirls, I don't like to remember the horrors I've witnessed.

Hartman is not the only celebrity to have sold games back in the day. Pre-scandal Pete Rose and Mr. Chicken himself, Don Knotts, also got in the fun in this 1978 gem for the Atari system.

Then there's Jack Black, before he got the guitar and the extra 200 pounds, selling America on Pitfall in the first segment of this ad.

The lesson here? Appearing in a game commercial will make your acting career soar to new heights! Either you will be murdered by your wife, you will be disgraced by your profession in a gambling scandal or you'll be an unfunny fat dude with an equally fat untalented friend. I shudder to think of what will become of Mr. T.

I find it hard t believe you witnessed holocaust... Can I have your time machine?

Joking aside.

I must find a random game commercial to star in

Damn that's one crazy ad. It's a shame that he's not around. He was very passionate in every performance he put in.

Mr. T's got one of the cleanest celebrity records I've ever seen. Providing he doesn't finally fall off the deep end and start the wife beating, hard drinking segment of his career, I think he can spare a video game commercial or two. For what it's worth, I absolutely loved his commercials.

man that commercial was heart pumping man I gotta get ready for those graphics and gameplay!

The Mr.T commercials are annoying...

but damn that was some crazy acting

I think Tenacious D are pretty funny, myself.

Dammit, I miss Phil Hartman. The guy was a comic genius and the glue that held SNL together. This commercial was just over the top crap though.

I myself enjoyed those, and was sad when I couldn't give my night elf a mohawk at the time. Hadn't found any mohawk grenades up to when I had to suspend my account, but watching Mr. T's toon chase a gnome through Goldshire, and throwing a grenade at it, is an image I will cherish, with many lulz. :D
I, too, remember that Pitfall commercial, though not the Phil Hartman one. Thanks for sharing these, Greg. Cookie for you.

Mr.T commercials are actually funny. Be it WoW or the candy bars xD

I guess sometimes you just need a paycheck. :p

Hey what....Mr.T`s commercials are super cool :D
They wouldnt hire him if he was a lame broke ass actor or something. I mean he is endorsing WoW (100mil a month franchise) and Snickers....thats big stuff.
But seriously i wanna see Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Hugh jackman doing a WoW commercial . . . .and then watch as the whole world turns wow o.O
Or those gays from Twilight :D whooo boy talk about girls in MMORPGs D:

Nothing beats Bob Dole and his Viagra ads..... nothing.
Bob Dole.

Phil Hartman

Bless his crazy soul.

Did you just insult Jack Black....

I have to kill you now Greg....

Has Gary Coleman ever done a video game ad? His career pretty much went to shit after Diff'rent Strokes was cancelled.

Jack Black really hasn't changed (besides the size difference).

That's slightly creepy.

Woah, I just had a sudden rush of ideas of how to get a Twilight MMO to work.

I could be rich, if I actually knew how to put it all together...

I don't believe there were any aired ads, but he was in, and did some promotional work for Postal 2.

Wow! That game looked so realistic. No one todays youth are messed up. Just look at those players beat the snot out of each other.

I found his acting in that commercial to be over the top, but I coudn't help but laugh at it after seeing his face in it.

"...with fat and equally unfunny friends."

So, am i mistaken to believe that Dave Grohl is fat and unfunny? hmm?

SHUT YA JIBBA-JABBA FOOL!
MR. T is immune to the effect of game endorsement.

I got to thinking about this advertisement while I was at work tonight(and yes, I have legitimate time to think about random stuff...do I ever), and I just realized, that this shows an adult, circa 1981, buying a console videogame...for himself. Next time some ignorant ass starts preaching that games are for kids, I will just smile, remembering the image of Phil Hartman walking into a videogame store to get himself some Ice Hockey.
Speaking of that version of Ice Hockey, that cashier wasn't talking out of his butt, that game is fun and can be quite...rousing. It is worth getting that excited over.

I must say, I too think Jack Black is pretty darn funny. And Tenacious D. although Kyle by himself is not funny.

In truth, I do find School of Rock and the first Tenacious D cd funny as well. But the movie The Pick Of Destiny wasn't very good and I think the band has kind of peaked in the amount of funny they can consistently produce. Jack Black, however, will most likely rise from the ashes and put together a decent string of movies. I could even see him shed the comedy and land some meaty dramatic roles a la Tom Hanks and Robin Williams. He already has in films like Margot at the Wedding.

But hey, I needed a punchline so I went for some low-hanging fruit and made fun of the fat kid. Sorry about that, but not even my moderate fondness for Jack Black will stand in the way of my journalistic integrity.

ahhh the wonderful 80s and their bad video games and even worse commercials. well i remember when video games were in the toy section of the local department stores, not the tv/electronics section.

You don't know Kyle? I thought Tenacious D was funny first time around and Pick of Destiny was funny as well and is hell lot better than comedies starring say, Adam Sandler.

Its at least better than all the WoW commercials that pop up...

I hope that sentence was worth all the kittens God just killed because of it. :P
