Gamer Petitions Infinity Ward for Color Blind Option in Modern Warfare 2

image

A petition has been started to get Infinity Ward to add support for color-blind gamers to Modern Warfare 2.

Color-blindness probably isn't something that you often think about in relation to videogames, but for the thousands of men and women it affects, it can be a significant hindrance when playing certain games, especially when playing online.

One such game is Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2, which uses red and green to differentiate between friend and foe. As red-green color-blindness is the most common form, this makes the game almost impossible to play effectively.

Helen Hodsey has started a petition on behalf of her color-blind husband, as well as a Facebook group and has already managed to reach the ears of Infinity Ward's community manager Robert Bowling on Twitter.

While online petitions rarely make a great deal of difference, I'm hoping that this one gets plenty of coverage, because unlike certain other Modern Warfare 2 petitions, it's for a very good cause.

I agree. This is one of those petitions I can full hearty understand.

I hope they implant this.

Sounds like a good idea! Cetainly no reason why IW can't make a color-blind option... would be nice to see it happen. Consider me signed up!

I shall sign this.

It sounds reasonable and I can't imagine it impossible to change.

I have Red/Green color blindness but its not like we can distinguish between the 2. Its just tuff to see the difference in purple/blue and yellow/green. It totally sux balls when they make the indicators yellow and light green >.<

But this certainly a reasonable request. a tiny code patch to change the color isnt hard. But knowing how greedy IW has become its probably not "cost effective" to cater to 10% of the gamer populations. <.< (yes im a PC, and this is out of spite! XD)

Not a bad idea. I know that Blizzard changed Netherspite slightly to accomodate colour-blind people so it's not unheard of.

Either change the colours slightly or add a slight shape discrepancy between the two that's easily recognisable.

Onwards!

I know the feeling, the amount of times I die trying to find people in the grass takes the piss.

What a good idea! I hope Infinity Ward listen to this lady on behalf of her husband.

Hope this one gets through, it's pretty reasonable after all

I'm red/green colour blind (as are 10% or so of men), so i think im entitled to say:

WHAT?!? you actually fucking care enough about a game to write in to the MAKERS to bitch??

and so what if you can't tell friend from foe? shoot them both. it makes for a more fun game experience, and its a fucking GAME. they don't die. there is no harm done. grow up and chill out.

christ next there will be a petition to make so and so bullet proof or something. its a minor problem you can work around massively easily. i don't notice a problem playing games, the only reason i would raise a petition like that is for attention.

I agree this is a good idea and should be implemented where games have indicators, but to be honest I don't think anyone should be allowed to see the friend / foe indicator in COD, at all. It's all about Hardcore Mode...

On CoD5 you could change the colours to an alternate colour scheme. It's no big deal. Besides, It's not that hard without them.

You can make the same arguments against these guys as you can the server people.
"You dont have to buy it!"
"they dont owe you anything!"
"Get over yourselves!"
'Speak with your wallet and not your mouth!"
When longtime fans ask to KEEP a feature that's both the STANDARD in pc shooters/COD series AND save's the dev's time and money developing IW.net, they get bashed. When super-special colorblind gamers want IW to actively change something to fit their minority situation suddenly we should all support them.
Really?
I support them but it's sad that you have to be disabled to be excluded from bashing.
"Oh but slopeslider they didnt choose to be colorblind!" I could argue they could choose to play another game instead of whining to IW, but I'm not a heartless tool who only supports disabled people petitions.

You're on a GAMING website complaining about people caring about games? Besides, constantly being Teamkilled does NOT make for a more exciting experience just a more irritating one, adding in a colour blind mind is hardly a massive amount of work and is beneficial to everyone. Sheesh

And besides who are you supposed to write to about changing the game aside from the makers? Yeah okay I'm going to ask the escapist to change it, hell I'll ask Gordan fooking Brown, anyone aside from the people who actually maintain and created the game.

Oh and in your words "chill out", you're the most abrasive in the thread thus far.

I'll gladly sign this.

there is enjoying gameplay and then taking it too far. i would accept this argument from a military sim player like OFDR, where dying is a real problem, but you play CD6 to live fast and die quickly. why in gods name would you petition the makers to change it unless you really cared, to a creepy sort of level about how you did.

what? simply playing it isn't enough? your going to kick up a fuss and make excuses everytime your killed?? if it really bothers you change your fucking game.

Hope this gets through, most reasonable for online gamers.

I shall sign this posthaste XD

Yeah but the point is, because said people are colourblind and thus unable to differentiate between friend or foe is ever so slightly crippling to your game play (or so I would assume)

But yes my reasoning for signed the petition for IW to keep dedicated servers in the game is because of the massive benefits they bring, and because I care heavily about gaming developing as an art form, and not as an exploited cash cow, many mod makers go on to work in the industry and shining examples of how to do things right (see Counter Strike, Natural Selection, etc), because they see things from inside the pen, and not from out side through the eyes of Bobby Kotik, and I still havent bought MW2 because I care about gaming so much, and I may never buy it, but I stand by my decision to sign the petition for dedicated servers.

I know colour blind mode and that are quite different, but it's just showing a reason as to why you should speak up to developers, otherwise you might as well roll over so they can stomp on the other side of your face, we buy the games, not them so we're well within our rights to say what we want.

Good idea but will be as succesful as the dedicated server issue?

In terms of votes: Probably no

In terms of reaction and goodness from IW: Probably yes.

Only 1000 signatures? Come on guys, help them out, you might get into heaven for it. Or at the very least you won't burn in hell.

This is an internet petition that might just actually work because it makes sense, something other internet petitions lack. I'm actually rooting for this guy. I mean, it wouldn't be hard at all. All you have to do is put it under a color filter, and it would just be an option that you could choose. This could be a new thing that games start doing, and it's definitely for the best.

I can't see why this should not work. It's a nice idea after all.

A petition for something I agree with?

I'm going crazy. I must be.

I don't even like the CoD series but I really hope they do this, I am red/green colour blind and even though it doesn't effect me in most games the one's that it does become a real pain in the ass to play.

Especially Hexic HD. It does have a colour blind option but that doesn't help when the bombs start coming.

Go ahead. I'd actually use it, even though I'm not colorblind. Just for a change of pace. Iirc, Quake 4 had a PINK crosshairs option.

They could easily implement a feature with a sign next to the person's name when it shows up. Like a skull next to the enemy's name and a flower next to a friendly's :P
And then the enemy uses Cold-Blooded pro and it doesn't matter anymore.

While I understand that the inability to tell the difference between two colours with ease may be a problem in some games (namely Team Fortress 2 and Halo where colour is the only thing that is used to determine which team you are on) I don't see how this applies in MW2 where you can tell who is on what team just by looking at them (the Militia and Task Force 141 do look somewhat different from one another, as do the Army Rangers and Russians (I can't spell Spetznaz).

Good for them, i hope something happens to help. If not, i guess there stuck playing Free for All.

I wonder what the dude that's suing everyone and there mother has to say about this...

The latter makes the former doubtful.

Play hardcore mode. simple.

and you can tell the allies/hostiles apart by..you know.. actually LOOKING at what kind of camo/clothing they are wearing. It just proves the casual noobness COD has turned into, to where you dont even look at your targets anymore to see friend or foe, you just shoot when a name pops up.

you are color blind, not blind.

If everyone with some kind of problem had their own pettition it would be impossible to ever make games.

Dyslexic people are going to petition to have an option to change the format of the wording and handicap people will now want to play with their minds, and if IW doesn't comply, they are obviously discriminating. They shouldn't have to spend the time, money and resources going through and patching everything for a very small amount of people.

There are varying degrees of color blindness too, I'm red/green and I have trouble seeing light colors against light colors (pink against white) and dark colors against dark (red against green) even though I can see any of those colors alone. Color blindness actually disqualifies a person from direct combat jobs in the U.S. military.
And it's roughly 50% of all males that have some form of color blindness ranging from slight (which is where you seem to be) to total (black and white vision.) But if you want a way to get around the base color schemes, wear blue tinted glasses. It changes the colors from things you can't see into shades of blues that you can see fine (unless you are blue/green, then I'd guess wear red tinted lenses.)

Signing. Thanks for the heads up!

This is about as stupid as Assassin's Creed not having subtitles. Actually it's even dumber considering how easy it would be to fix. Seriously, how hard is it to have a deaf guy and colorblind guy playtest your game? Isn't that a lot better than alienating entire groups of potential customers?

As far as I know, formatting text differently doesn't help dyslexics at all. And while there is an industry based on creating accessible controllers for the handicapped, actually implementing it would require a drastic amount of design changes. This, however, could easily be fixed with the next patch: as someone suggested, stick a skull in front of enemy names and a peace sign or whatever in front of friendlies. If such a simple fix would ensure more people will play and enjoy your game, i don't see why Infinity Ward wouldn't want to do it.

Also, there's a reason the color-coded name pops up in the first place. it's a hell of a lot harder to determine "friend or foe" by uniform alone. In some situations it's impossible, which is why friendly-fire incidents occur surprisingly often in actual combat situations.

HotFezz8:
grow up and chill out

Take this to heart, it sounds like you're getting really worked up over a really minor thing.
