Valve Brings Crafting to Team Fortress 2

image

Valve is introducing crafting to Team Fortress 2, giving players a chance to finally do something with all that useless crap they've been lugging around in their inventories.

Crafting, the technical term for the art of turning crap into other kinds of marginally-less-useless crap, has historically been an RPG-focused activity and not the sort of thing your average online FPS really paid attention to. But no longer!

All those months of carrying around duplicate weapons, stupid hats and other assorted garbage you have absolutely no use for are finally going to pay off. Valve is releasing a series of "blueprints" that will provide formulas detailing how various objects can be combined into other items that are actually useful for something; other blueprints will remain secret until players figure them out. "Think of blueprints as recipes, but instead of making Chicken Cordon Bleu, they make guns!" the company wrote on the TF2 blog. "And hats! And Sandviches, which in retrospect would have helped our analogy better if we'd mentioned that first."

As an example, a "smelt primary weapons" blueprint was posted to illustrate how excess guns could be put together to create "useful scrap metal." Clearly, not every crafted item is going to be a game-changer, but it's better than having 27 jars of Jarate lying around. TF2 crafting isn't available quite yet (I just blew a half-hour "checking") but should go live fairly soon, so keep your eyes peeled!

Interesting, but I am a bit worried that this might disturb the balance of the game somewhat, by moving away from the FPS elements.

Ahh Team fortress 2 and its mild RPG elements...I hope this is real because I want to be able to make half sniper rifle half minigun weapn! It would be hilarriously over powered.

Why does Valve hate America?

Interesting path to take. Considering the size of the playerbase I'm sure it won't be long before most every blueprint is discovered and posted on GameFAQs or somethin'.

I believe you would only be able to use scrap to make existing weapons:
I.E. Two Huntsmans create a Jarate.

I wonder what I could make with jarate, a hat, a flame thrower, a sandvich, and a needle gun...

nope sorry to ruin you minigun with a scope dream but its just making other weapons in to already made weapons. like say if you need a backburner other items will combine to make the back burner put you'll need the blue print to make it.
any way it looks fun it'd help me get the weapons i need

An awesome-r party hat?

Hate to be that guy, but... Old news much? This was posted at December 12th.

But it's good anyway. Finally i will be able to do something with these stupid duplicates.

thats awesome, i love what valve did with tf2, from back in the days when i was just a small fps bundled whit episode 2 to a huge awesome fps still able to compete whit the newest 60 euro titles (boy what game could i be talking about).

This is why I love Valve. If only other companies continued to support their PC games this way.

my theory is that blueprints will be for all classes 4th weapon at some point. whoever wins demoman vs soldier just gets theirs' first

hopefully the pyro's weapon is better than the backburner....

And TF2 is officially an RPG. Congratulations.

Tough Guy's Toque you shall be mine!

I challenge you to find a hat more awesome than that.

Better than that - it's an MMORPS! Woo!

I can't seem to get any drops. I just have a spare Backburner, so I guess this won't affect me for a looooong time...

That sounds great.

I'm hoping for some non-combat items, like unique new hats... Or perhaps unique guns you can't find =p

I've got a crapload of weapons lying around, can't wait to use them.

Is that such a bad thing though? I think I'd rather know what I'm making than end up with something even more useless than what I started with.

Why must you all crush my dreams of a long range, fast firing, high damage, scoped minigun? You people are like the Grinch...YOU RUINED CHRISTMAS FOR ME! *Ahem* Sorry about that but why must you crush my dreams? :"(

Saxton Hale's hat...

That he made with his damn bare hands!

Something tells me that the few items I have will create something completely useless..

Gentlemen, you have quite a treasure there in that horadric cube.

I knew they were going to do something with all the extra weapons, but I never saw this coming. Pretty damned neat, eventually all the duplicates are going to turn into D2 style random drops once people get the hang of crafting and making slews of different guns. At least that's what I'm hoping happens.

Like that time I put three level 15 rings in and got a level 2 amulet... yea, I learned that one the hard way. Oh wait, I'm still thinking Diablo 2.

I Demand that my Soldiers rockets get a Jarate splash which puts out flame and adds mini crits.

Also, I wouldn't say no to a Sticky Bomb Minigun "SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM!!! BWUAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA!"*Right click* "You have lost connection to the server."

News announced 3 days after i purged my inventory of everything that was duplicated. Awesome!

And i STILL don't have my Jarate.

I haven't played TF2 in a while(well, since the spy update actually) but I have never seen that third weapon in the crafting area before.

And the Backburner is awesome, and flour, that looks like an ubersaw to me.

I just deleted all my duplicate crap...

Anyway, I've got pretty much all the weapons I need, so I'm looking forward to make some nice hats.

The backburner is useless, it doesn't have the compressed air blast. That is vital to survival against soldiers, demomans and UBERs.

Hmm, I have a buncha duplicates, triplicates and evey quadruplicats, so I might just craft myself a nice hat or the Kritskrieg...

Tell me what the recpie is to get the Miner's Light, Soldier's Stash, Officer's Ushanka, Brigade Helmet, Otolaryngologist's Mirror and Gentle Manne's Service Medal. NOW.

something hilarious.

on a semi-unrelated note, remember the Team Fortress 2 RPG screenshots that were released a while back?

yea, maybe.......just..........maybe they wern't fan made..............

Now thats pretty cool. Something to do with all those items I have collected over the years...

...sweet!

The Service Medal was something of a secret item; only 11,111 people have them. I doubt they'll be avaliable through crafting

Very nice,

It's really nice to <cough>episode-3</cough> see Valve's commitment to it's <cough>episode-3</cough> games. They keep improving <cough>episode-3</cough> and building on <cough>episode-3</cough> the great games they already <<cough>episode-3</cough> made.

I can't wait to see the new <cough>episode-3</cough> weapons for the solider <cough>episode-3</cough> and the demoman. This dedication by Valve <cough>episode-3</cough> is what made me wonder at the <cough>episode-3</cough> ban on L4D2. I think valve <cough>episode-3</cough> has earned our trust by now.

But I can't help but wonder <cough>episode-3</cough> what are there <cough> episode 3 </cough> plans FOR THE FUCKING HALF-LIFE SERIES! WHERE THE FUCK IS EPISODE 3?! ARE THEY EVEN WORKING ON IT ANYMORE? JESUS!

<cough>

When are you supposed to make the items. In the middle of a firefight?
