Xbox Thief Nabbed By Playing Online

image

A man in the Bronx played a stolen Xbox 360 over Xbox Live and the cops traced the IP address back to his grandmother's house.

The 22-year-old man, Jeremiah Gilliam, was found with many items including GPS devices, PlayStations, laptops and videogames that he allegedly received from burglarizing homes and breaking into cars in Westchester County, New York. One of the victims of the thefts was playing another Xbox online and saw that his old console was also connected. He informed his parents, who then notified the police.

Pelham Detective John Hynes said, "On the day of the burglary, the victim used another Xbox and saw his system was already online." Police found "a total of 53 items, including stolen credit cards" at the house. Gilliam was already under investigation for stealing goods from 13 unlocked cars in the New York area, and he is now booked on Grand Larceny.

The ability to trace gaming consoles via their IP address is amazingly cool. I suppose being a New York City cop isn't just about funny taglines and John McClane bravado.

And this story goes to show all you thieves out there, don't play with stolen goods. Big Brother is watching you, as is the kid you stole that Xbox from.

well serves him right for stealing a Xbox,

although this is the first step to total control by the police forces, which would suck.

I'm relying on doing nothing, and sitting on the side lines playing bass and singing, and hoping for the best.

what happened to the kids first stolen xbox, he bought a new one, now he has 2, that would be even worse
one will RRoD anyway I think

AHAHAHAH! SUCKER!!!!!!!!

Eh-hem.

. . .

That is all.

Now that's hilarious, almost as hilarious as those thieves who drew masks on themselves with maarker pens.

At Grandma's house. Must have been one funny arrest.

They can trace us using our game consoles...

That's creepy...

Ha. Revenge is sweet. I'd actually be happy to have my Xbox stolen if they could trace the guy who did it via his IP. It is a pretty awesome way to catch someone.

No offense man but do you have to mention that EVERY time you post?

OT: Serves him right the fucker, if he was a full thief then good thing they tracked the console down.

Seriously I'm glad this is possible, I mean it's not just thieves like him, sometimes this will happen among friends or people that hate each other from school or something like that, so if they play the console online then perhaps they have a chance of tracking it down.

Reminded me off the first level in SWAT 4.

your not looking at the big picture, now he can boost even easier in MW2!

I also lol at how this is similar to the guy who's TV and 360 were stolen, a kid sent him a message saying "I got your 360 NIGGA!" yea, thats what the thief actually said, so dont think Im a racist, the victim searched the gamer tag and had the original e-mail address of it and simply told him 'return it', the thief said something smart ass and within ten minutes the peanut gallery got the e-mail. death threats and lulz were had in typical fashion, it got so bad that the kid had his mom drop off the 360 on the victim's front porch.

long story short; stealing a 360 is a really, really stupid idea..........

Image fix

Which would be awesome, no crime would be unpunished. Of course there must be certain measurements to hold the police forces themselves in line but that won't be too challenging.

Good to know justice has a chance.

What a moran.

Mere three words.

What. An. Idiot.

Monocle Man:

As long as they don't try to arrest us for thoughtcrimes, that is.

Seriously, if you're going to steal, learn how to not get caught.

What can I say he friggin deserves to be chaught

Justice has been served, now where is my drink?
What? He got what he deserved, what more can I say?
Well done cops?

AkJay:
What a moron.

Fix'd.

Only Homer could figure out how to do that. Any episode number?

I spelt it wrong on purpose, that was the joke.

that's pretty funny, some criminals are rather stupid. i think it's funny how they try and get away with stuff in this day and age and think that they can't get caught

would have been funnier if he was playing GTA at the time he got caught

Dumbass...
But I always love these "got 'em!" stories

I wonder if she was there, lol, would have been so funny to see him explain himself out of that one!

LOL!.... I'm so smart... I'm gonna play some GTA IV with my friends now online cause I'm awesome.. wait guys.. someones at the door.. oh.. *Sad sounding voice* hello officers.. I wasn't just shooting all your buddies in GTA IV... NOT THE FACE! *Thud sound*

What makes me curious is this...

Why don't companies pirate out their own software with a small addition - A tracking code that alerts the company of the IP address of any user running their software illegally?

Funnier is seeing an old woman dive out the back window with arms full of stolen merchandise.

well yes of course I do, what did you expect?

It helps to be smart if you're going to be evil.

Awesome, what a loser. Serves him right.

Reminds me of another story.

Teenaged kid breaks into a house. In the middle of looting he decides to check his Facebook account on the computer in the house. But when he left he didn't log out or even take the computer. So when the homeowners came home there was all of his information on their computer. They called the police who promptly took his information and arrested him.

*facepalm* so many idiots out there.

If I can find the link to this story I'll post it.

you earned it.

OT: Yeah, kind of creepy that they can track you through your consoles. Hey, at least they caught him.

That guy is 22??? I'm 23 and he still looks about 7 years older than me.

Because they do do this. Many people who download games for their chipped/flashed xbox's know how to check the software for such devices prior to putting them to disk.

Man, how stupid do you have to be? I'd at least wait a little while before playing it online.

TheYellowCellPhone:

They can trace you with just about everything, even traffic lights and the fillings in your teeth, also your not safe anywhere, all posters hide tiny cameras. (Seriously though they can track you with your phone and computer).

serves that guy right

What. A. Bloody. Tube.

Grand Larceny, on that many counts, he'll be down for a while. Shoulda stayed in school and ignored the hood life Jerry.
