New SMB Wii Already Outselling Mario Galaxy

image

What Super Mario Galaxy did in two years, New Super Mario Bros. Wii did in 45 days.

Let's get the record straight: I absolutely adored 2007's Super Mario Galaxy. It remains, to this day, easily one of my favorite games of the generation. Brilliant level design, great mechanics, and a wonderful sense of charm that other games that don't feature a pudgy plumber gleefully flying through space wide-armed simply don't have. So did plenty of other people, which is why it sold 4.1 million copies worldwide since its launch in November 2007.

But as it turns out, there's something to be said for familiarity, too: According to data from widely-trusted number-crunchers NPD group, New Super Mario Bros. Wii has sold 4.2 million since its launch in November 2009 - in other words, it's surpassed its big brother with two years to spare.

That makes sense, when you look at it. Many more people have Wiis now than they did when Galaxy came out, and there's something immediately recognizable about NSMBW's standard old-school platforming. It's probably a lot easier for a gamer or a parent to say "Oh hey, I remember that from when I was a kid!" and pick it up to play with family and friends like it was 19-freakin'-90.

Still, New Super Mario Bros. Wii is no Galaxy, nosiree.

NSMB is pretty deserving of selling a lot but Galaxy was so much better.

Thats awesome. I think both games are great, but if I had to choose I would go with Galaxy. Although one thing about Galaxy that did annoy me was the Spring Suit. Thankfully you didn't use it that often

I guess that there are a lot of people who just don't like playing this sort of 3D game but do like 2D platformers or at least 2D Super Mario games. They do like Mario Kart though so it's not like they hate 3D. I don't know, there are lots of games that I don't care for that sell more than games I do care in more extreme ways than this. Not worth worrying about.

And at least Galaxy wasnt a rehash!

New Super mario brothers wii is a game that actually causes violence in families and friends. Not since battletoads for the original NES has there been a co-op mode filled with so much malice and greed. If you can beat this game with another person, kudos to you, both of you are really good at staying out of eachothers way. It's a pretty fun game, but don't play it with anyone you love, or you might find yourself sleeping on the couch.

I don't really like any Mario games except the RPGs.

So...this is kinda "meh" for me. Although that many copies in that little time?

Could NSMB Wii actually be a good game? NO! It must be nostalgia.

Could it be people prefer run-n-jump platforming to scavenger hunts? NO! It must be they can't appreciate Galaxy's genius.

Why all the hostility towards Nintendo? They make a new 2D Super Mario Bros game, literally the most popular game of all time, and you attack them for it? You should be thanking them!

Not really bad news since people are buying actual Nintendo games on the Nintendo Wii. I haven't played NSMBW yet, but I loved Galaxy and it does seem like the better game.

This pretty much summed up what I thought when I saw the headline. Given the ad campaign for NSMBW compared to Galaxy, this makes even more sense. There weren't really that many huge Wii games this holiday season, so this was up against nothing, giving it the easy upper hand.

Man this is depressing. I'm sure if they just made the game "Super Mario & Sonic's Modern Warfare Halo Adventures: A Link to the Past" which was no more than the 1st levels of the mentioned games it'd be the best selling game ever. Ech, goodbye gaming, was nice knowing you.

Galaxy was vastly superior. NSMB sucked, it was just a cheap crappy port of the DS version with new levels designed to quell the fanboy terror that Nintendo were turning their backs on the hard core maket, something which everyone with half a brain knows they've already done.

After playing it, I can't see how NSMB Wii isn't inferior to LittleBigPlanet - level design, graphics, control etc. The only reasonable explanation I can think of is 1) The franchise name & 2) Nostalgia.

If these people had good taste, they wouldn't have a Wii in the first place.
OH SNAP!

In all seriousness though, I think the fact that this appealed to young and old and the environmental situation of both the sales, makes this terribly unsurprising.

I think you need to re-define what you call an attack.

Who's attacking? NSMBW is great fun. Just not as awesomesauce as Galaxy was ;)

I still need to play this game. But good job for it, nonetheless. Also, I should do this before anyone else gets there:

Whoa whoa whoa: who the hell mentioned LBP? That has quite literally nothing to do with the situation at hand. And while I could argue that customizeable levels does not a good game make, I feel I must question why the hell you brought it up to begin with. This article was about the sales of NSMB Wii, and the comment here was about people's hostility towards Nintendo. Nobody here has suggested related the two games you just did besides you.

i like Super Mario galaxy more than new super Mario bros wii, but that is just my opinion.

You were saying that NSNB Wii could be a good game. I picked another game from the genre which I believe shows NSMB Wii to be nothing other than nostalgia and a franchise name. Not a hard concept really...

Well, to be correct, I just entered the thread.

Calling LBP's controls superior to any Mario game at all is a laugh. The jumping in that game is far too floaty to be dependable because its based on a physics engine. I'm not saying physics-based platformers are bad, its just that LBP made the characters too light. Then there's the absolute joy in entering a Z-layer that you didn't mean to because the game thought it might be a good idea, causing you to fall to your death. Love it. The level design in Mario is fantastic: that's also the case with LBP, but I feel that Mario is superior. That one's a matter of opinion. Then there's the graphics: you win this one. While both games have a nice style, LBP's HD-ready stuff simply looks better.

So you have graphics and level design. Those are all well and good, but I think I'll keep to the spectacular control that doesn't kill me, thanks.

Your idea the characters are too light sadly is just opinion. I never had an issue with it, neither did many of the other players. Plus I never found the z-layer to cause me to fall to my death - it was mostly used to get onto the beginning of bridges etc, not a jump over a dangerous ravine....Not sure where you got that idea from. I'm not saying the level design in Mario is bad, I'm saying NSMBW has awful level design as it's bland, monotonous, predictable etc. You can simply change the colour of one level and *bang* you've basically got another.
Unfortunately all you are saying is Mario is better because you could play it better; I found it that Mario was far too simplistic in it's controls with little challenge other than great at causing annoyance in co-op mode.

this is slightly depressing, especially considering NSMB isn't really a "new" game, as the title implies. how many time do you honestly want to own the same game? now you can play the same platformer you played 10 years ago on the wii! not only that, you can now develop a strong hate for those around you who think it wise to play along side you!
at least SMG was new... ish.

And everything you've been saying is fact? My, you have a high opinion of yourself. And calling Mario's level design bland and monotonous... point out to me how exactly jumping on the backs of flying manta rays is bland? What about the level where meteors fall from the sky and destroy level elements? How is that monotonous? Or how about the final fight with Bowser? I'm sorry, but I cannot take your opinion (and it is exactly that: an opinion) seriously.

Ah damn. I haven't played either, but at least Galaxy had innovation. And I won't give that to NSMBW for the four player thing, cause you can bounce off each other...

Agreed, SMG was a brand new experience and changedthe way you can play a 3d platformer, NSMBW felt more like a step backwards, towards the basics.

I bought one copy of Galaxy and two copies of NSMBW. The copy of Galaxy was for me. One of the copies of NSMBW was for my mom for Christmas. I wouldn't get her Galaxy because she really can't play 3D games; she just can't get the hang of the controls.

You know, LBP had some cute ideas, but the character control was just awful. It wasn't really too light as much as it was bizarre and often unpredictable. It felt like your little puppet was drunk and you only ever had partial control over him.

NSMBW was a little sluggish (Mario took just a bit too long to speed up/slow down), but it was miles better than LBP.

Played a demo of it at Wal-Mart and was decidedly unamazed. Perhaps it's just the soul-sucking nature of Wal-Mart, or perhaps it's just that I don't really like the Wiimote's shape: I just couldn't get into it.

I mean, it's the exact sort of gameplay I like: but I just couldn't enjoy it for some reason. It honestly confuses me.

We should be thanking them for the privilege of paying sixty plus clams for a game that is fifteen years too late?

I don't think so. I think they ought to be thanking us (or whoever bought the game to begin with) for even considering supporting such an ass-backwards concept.

If they didn't do this all the time people would talk about how much Nintendo cares for it's core fan-base the few times they decided to. I hate some logic...

It's the multiplayer, duh.

Friends can always use a new output to find ways to screw with each other: I've heard countless tales of friends picking each other up just to chuck them down the next hole, hell, even from my music teacher.

Simplicity is what generates money. Of course they can resell it as... oh say the very first three Mario games? Multiplayer especially is a let down. Why would you want that feature when all it does is screw other players around and perhaps throw the remote in frustration?

Besides, how many figures NSMB on DS sell?

To the Re-Release-o-Tronmobile!

Dunanananananananah...Nintendo!and Batman...

That's a shame because Galaxy was freaking amazing imo.
