Square-Enix Continues to Tease Gamers With Final Fantasy VII Remake

Square-Enix is remaining nice and vague on the subject of a next-gen Final Fantasy VII remake , saying that it won't be happening 'for the time being'.

As the game that introduced the franchise to a much wider audience.Final Fantasy VII is a milestone in the Final Fantasy series. It's one of the best loved games of the original PlayStation, but there's no denying that the game is showing its age, and the above tech demo - which recreates the opening scene of the game - has prompted years of speculation and rumor that a remake is in the works, rumors that persist, despite the repeated rebuffs from Square-Enix.

This time, it's Final Fantasy VII Character Designer, and now Game Director, Tetsuya Nomura who is neither confirming nor denying anything. "Fans are looking forward to an oft rumored remake of FFVII," Nomura said. "But I don't believe this will happen for the time being."

Let's be clear on that, that's not a no, that's a 'not yet'. Nomura did suggest that the game's protagonist, the pointy-haired amnesiac Cloud Strife, might appear as a guest star in other games, but as he's already appeared as a guest star in a number of other games that's not really going to be much comfort.

If you're desperate to play FFVII on your PS3, you can get it on PSN, or play your old PS1 copy, but if you're waiting for a remake, the official word from Squeenix is pretty much 'keep waiting'.

Damn you square enix!!! just do the remake already!

Didn't they say a definite no a while ago? This is just getting stupid.

Why don't they just go and do it? I think its silly, but at this point, they seem more in it for money with this sub-franchaise...

eh...I want a remake of 8. It's summon oriented and with today's graphix, it'd be even cooler.

The Great JT:
They're not gonna do it.

You're an imbecile, FF8 was garbage.

Personally, I loved the way enemies leveled to you. I fucking hated the romance angle, though.

I agree. I loved 8, and in my opinion, it was the coolest and most fun of the series.

Do PS1 games still work on the new Slims? Or is it like the PS2 compatibility.

OT: I love how they constantly tease the fans. It must be how they spend their lunch breaks.

You totally wish your opinion was worth something, don't you?

Dam Square-Enix just make the re-make already. I'd love to play this game with better graphics. Also as stated before, a FF8 re-make woud be awesome too.

A remake will definitely happen eventually. Sony have already stated that they have a ten year plan for the PS3, with six years left in that, so there's plenty of time for a PS3 remake of FF VII. Plus, given how many fans seem desperate for a remake, Square-Enix would be fools not to cash in on that and pander to the constant demands. As an Xbox 360 owner who intends to save up for a PS3 as well after replacing my stolen Xbox, I'd definitely want to see an FF VII remake. And there's no doubt it will eventually happen, I'm certain of it. It's just a case of when, especially when you see that most of the development teams in SE that focus on Final Fantasy games are presumably concentrating on the wider FF XIII universe, not to mention developing their next MMO, FF IV. There'll be a remake eventually though...

VIII was absolutely horrible. No questions asked. I originally enjoyed it, but there's only so much of Rinoa (hint: no Rinoa would be just peachy!) and the absolutely stupid Junction system I can take. Sure, the soundtrack was pretty awesome and it looked purdy but that's really where it stopped for me. The actual human-sized "sprites" were a cool thing to see though, compared to a pixel mash. The story just kept turning more and more into a shit-storm... Until you finally get to control the Ragnarok, then everyone can fuck right off so I can just fly that baby around for ages and ages.

But then again, I really enjoyed IX and it's really over-looked a lot of the time.
Sure, VII could maybe be remade (hell, it's the only one in the PS1 generation that doesn't actually look that great).. If there were some subtle tweaks to the gameplay and some added awesome that the original doesn't have, that'd be cool too.

EDIT @AP, just so you know, it's available on PSP's PSN too and works for both PS3 and PSP. Vagrant Story's up there too.

you can get this on psn??

damn, startin to regret getting my 360 now :(

I would sacrifice a limb for this to happen...

Sony hates money. It's why they aren't pushing for remaking FFVII and why they don't have proper backwards compatability for both PS1 and PS2.

EDIT: Oh, and FF8 was garbage. It was even worse than 12.

Shocker I know, but my favourite was 9. Though I don't think it needs to be remade.
I don't even know if I'd enjoy playing a remade 7. I think I'm sort of done with Final Fantasy, apart from occasionally re-playing 9.

...wut? That's not Squeenix's fault. SONY were the ones that completely neglected PS2 backwards compatibility for the PS3 Slim's, etc. PS1 games are somehow fine though.

DOH! Yeah, my bad...I'll fix that. I meant Sony.

Anyone remember that scene where they're floating in zero gravity?
That was just... awkward.
I really liked FFVIII personally; FFVII is in fact my least favourite of the three PS1 FFs. I think perhaps the biggest thrills were stumbling across things like the Underwater Base and Odin's Tower, it was like :

"Sea... sea... sea... fuck, I hate the sea... sea... WAIT, WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT RED AND GREY SPLODGE?! IS THAT MEANT TO BE THERE?! Shit, Imma gonna check that out... walking, walking, walking... AHHHH FUCKING BIG ASS DRAGON MONSTER, YOU DIE NOW!"

Where does 9 fit in? It's the top for me, of the PS1 games.

Nine is shamefully neglected. It was my first and favourite, and is very different from all the others I've played.
Kuja and his fucked-up relationship with Zidane was great. =]

Eh, it's okay, buddy. Wasn't meaning to attack you or anything, I was just curious if you had it the right way or not xD Carry on :P

ahh. 8 was my start. Damn, i sucked back then. I didn't understand shit. Then I played it again 2 years later and everything went smooth.

YAY! 9 was my first too. I think the style is just a lot more interesting. And all the characters are at least somewhat likeable. And I could never forget how awesome the Moogles are in it.

So, there's no mediocre remake for a mediocre JRPG? Okay then.

And before you supa supa kawaii desu ne ^_^ ^_^ ^_^ Japanophiles break out the outrage, it's just my opinion.

I vote a remake of 8 too.
I loved 8 much more than I did 7.

I was wondering when one of you would show up. Yeah..... you don't really have a spot in this thread.

Still haven't played FF7, still stuck on FF8, still haven't played FF9, still calling favorites on FF10.

I'd much rather have a remake of 5 or 6 than 7. But that's just my opinion. The tech demo does look really nice though.

Yeah, the Junction system was very confusing to a kid of nine years. =] Somehow I bumbled through the first three discs without understanding it and came unstuck when I had to fight Adel.
Thankfully I worked it out and had the pleasure of giving up on the puzzles in Ultimecia's castle instead.

Oh, the moogles. Many an hour was spent trying to fix their primitive e-mail system. =D
I liked how the game started off relatively normal and by the end was a complete chaotic mess; you begin in a town doing commonplace things like kidnapping princesses, and yet by the end you've been to space, ripped the very fabric of the universe and met a bizarre blue frog-creature who kills things with a big fork.

Never played 8, but I'd like to replay 7 (for the millionth time) but love 9 for the art style and the best minigame.

And because Vivi is awesome.

Remake number 9 and I'll orgasm on the spot.
As for 7... I'd probably get it, but it's not my favourite.

I'm with you guys, I'd really like to see a remake of 8 over anything else. It's the only one other than Tactics that I've wanted to replay (and have replayed several times).

Oddly, I really don't like Squall at all (he annoys me just as much as Cloud), but the rest of the cast is a lot of fun, particularly Zell, which I think is why I like the game so much.

I keep hearing talks of 7, 8 and 9, yet Sakaguchi's masterpiece starring the insane clown is forgotten. Where is our FF6 REMAKE (i.e. not a port)? All the previous final fantasy titles got one on the DS and the one that deserves the most recognition only gets ports? Really?
