Sega Unveils Episodic Sonic the Hedgehog 4

The veil is off "Project Needlemouse" at last: Sega has announced Sonic the Hedgehog 4, a direct 2D sequel to 1994's Sonic & Knuckles.

This weekend, there were rumors that the long-teased "Project Needlemouse" could perhaps actually be Sonic 4, the direct continuation of a once-glorious 2D platformer franchise that had been dormant since 1994's Sonic & Knuckles. And yes, those days had truly been glorious (personally, I consider the combination game Sonic 3 & Knuckles to be one of the finest old-school platformers ever made). But no, it was just wishful thinking, wasn't it? Sega couldn't possibly be giving the fans what they'd been asking for for years, could it?

As it turns out, yes. Yes they could.

"Project Needlemouse" is indeed Sonic the Hedgehog 4, reports Gamespot, and will be out on all three major consoles as a downloadable title (via XBLA, PSN, and WiiWare) this summer. Curiously, the launch trailer seen above refers to Sonic the Hedgehog 4, Episode 1, which indicates that there will be more to come. That, of course, makes it even more like Sonic 3 & Knuckles, which was one game that was released in two parts thanks to time and budget considerations (so in a way, the precursor to modern DLC when you think about it).

Sega associate brand manager Ken Balough told Gamespot that Sonic 4 will pick up directly where Sonic & Knuckles left off, and will include old-school elements such as the spin dash and power sneakers - as well as online leaderboards for the world's fastest hedgehogs to strut their stuff, and optional motion controls for the Wii Remote and the Sixaxis.

It remains to be seen if Sega can still pull the same magic out of the franchise, but the classic "Se-ga!" jingle brings a smile to my face nonetheless. One thing remains certain: As long as they call him Dr. Robotnik and can this "Eggman" crap, we'll be good.

Still a good article as always even if I don't give a flying fuck about Sonic.

Yay! There going back to an old 2D platformer!

I must my friend, hes going to jump with glee.

I cannot agree with this strongly enough.

That's why I said it. I meant it as sort of a joke. :D

Euh this trailer in itself is a serious let-down isn't it?

Everyone has been wanting a solid 2D Sonic games just like the good old days, and now we finaly get one. Its about bloody time and i hope Sega make it a worthy successor to Sonic 3.

Summer can't come soon enough.

That was me! But escapist news articles are always 50 billion times better than my lazy OPs.

Hmm, some part of me wants to say 'yay', but another part of me thinks that Sonic died many a year ago

A game company that listens to fans.......i think hell just froze over

i personally am excited since i love old school games (re-playing LoZ:OoT on an emulator right now)

I literally just made a thread about this linking the video and gamespot interview... you guys are always on top of things aren't you :P

Sega you've been so bad to me baby... Don't let this little grin I just spent on this movie be a drip of water into an endless sea of Betrayal.

This. I've stopped caring about the Sonic franchise a very long time ago, and to be honest I still don't care. But the "See-gaa!" sound does bring back a lot of memories.

Maybe New Super Mario Bros Wii has started a trend of big budget 2.5D games. No disrespect to the indie industry and handhelds they helped keep the dream alive but nostalgia calls to me sometimes.

Oh my god, a 2D Sonic.....did someone finally listen to fans? Did the dirty, leperous retards at Team Sonic finally figure out that 3D sucks for Sonic?

Well good for him. However, we need to actually play it before it can be hailed as a comeback.

Maybe you guys should just sticky a thread in the forums saying that what is on the forums =/= whats on the front page news?

... Well if you'll excuse me I better begin boarding up my windows. This is a sign of the apocalypse. But in all seriousness...

FUCK YES 2D SONIC!

When I first read the title, I thought to myself "Ugh, just give up, Sega. We already declared it dead."
But the trailer for a 2D Sonic made me happy.
Fingers crossed that this won't be a disappointment. :D

Close enough. The art direction is lazy but I just hope they don't fuck it up. Fingers crossed.

So this is basically sonic rush? meh not interested, I for one don't care much for sonic he's just a rubbish charecter (he doesn't even have a real personality). Say what you will about Shadow at least he has reasons for what he does and has the most complex personality in the series (really not that hard, and before anyone flames his only friend was shot dead in front of him he's certainly entitled to be angsty about it). This is the same reason I hate Mario he has even less personality than sonic.

Maybe you guys should make a paid position called "Forum Troll".

Say your in a bar and some hot girl asks you what you do for a living and say, "I'm a forum troll."

Not to say this will get you laid... it'd just be an awesome thing to let people know.

It's NOT the first 2D Sonic game since the megadrive days, why do people always say that? People always forget them but Sonic Advance was actually a pretty decent sonic game (didn't play SA2), and it was 2D :)

Oh, god, the Sonic Circle is already complete for me..

Why the Uekawa Style? Why call it Sonic 4 and and disgrace the good old games with that, when it looks like the fucking hold down forward forever till bored games we get since Advance 2?

I will never ever have hope for a new good Sonic..

Fucking. Yes.
Finally.

They've finally seen the light and started thinking with some god damn sense.

Just reading "Sonic" made me picture Yahtzee with a shotgun in hand, hat tipped slightly and a grin on his face. Sun gleaming in his glasses, as he raises the shotgun and BLAM BLAM BLAM darkness.

Somehow, I think it might be too late.

I'm sorry, I've just become so jaded to the mediocrity of Sonic Team due to their shitty games of recent years to hope there's some possibility that Sonic 4 will be good.

SEGAAAA!

I love that.

ABOUT DAMN TIME!

Yes!

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!

.......................although the way he runs looks a bit......odd.

Best game news of the year so far.

I liked the first 3d sonic game on the Dreamcast but unfortunately they didn't improve after that. I think this will change the trend.
I'd like to see them do a custom level thing: kind of like what you could do with the cheat in Sonic 2 but more like Little Big Planet.

Well, they've finally gone back to the good ol' 2D. =)
I've got one thing to definately download this summer...

But I'm still a bit cynical; Sonic Team have hurt me before.

Ah, so many memories flooding back of Sonic 2...
