The Nintendo DS stylus is destined to become much more than a stick used to poke things.
Rumors on Nintendo's next handheld are already flying around (and I'm not talking about the already announced DSi XL), with insider sources revealing a possible tilt function last week. The latest speculation involves future DS styli that could rumble in our hands.
The speculation was kicked off by a recent Nintendo patent addendum that includes the mention of a force-feedback stylus. The patent clearly involves the DS, as it begins: "A game apparatus includes an LCD, and a touch panel is placed on a top surface of the LCD." It then details a method through which the player of this apparatus can attack enemies in a game, saying: "In a case that the enemy character exists at a depth of a game screen, little damage is applied to the enemy character, and a weak vibration is applied to the game apparatus. Conversely, in a case that the enemy character exists at a front of the game screen, much damage is applied to the character, and a strong vibration is applied to the game apparatus."
Mentioned in the patent application imagery (found here in PDF format) are three different levels of vibration, all "transmitted to the fingers or hands of the payer via the stick." It looks like someone forgot to spellcheck, but this statement implies that Nintendo wants to patent the idea of rumbling sticks, i.e. styli, in relation to touch-screen play.
This idea is a natural progression for the Nintendo DS, seeing as how Nintendo Wii Remotes already rumble in a similar manner. If it weren't for handheld gaming taking place so close to one's face already, I would expect a speaker to be included in the stylus like the Wii Remote too. The basic premise of wireless technology being used to alter the DS stylus' functionality paints a future for it to become less a "stick," and more of a controller. Though the "DS2" is but a rumor for now, I'll be very interested to see what Nintendo comes up with. Perhaps morphing styli someday?
Dammit, ninja'd. Although my comment was going to be along the lines of "but it can still be used to poke things...*wink wink*".
OT: While it certainly sounds interesting, I doubt this is going to happen. Methinks Nintendo is patenting it just to patent it. I mean, I can't see outfitting styli with the equipment to make them rumble to be a feasible feature.
PayJ567: Yeah well the psp2 will hopefully have 2 joysticks so its obviously vastly superior. Anyone who says diffferently is a single minded nintendo fan boy!

It could go either way.
The exaggeration of the Single minded shows how I was joking... I had to edit it in, so I guess you quoted it too fast!
I expected there to be jokes about different applications of the stylus... I was right.
It may prove difficult to use and not precise. Also I wonder how big it would be if it has a rumble feature. If it was incorporated you would hope for it to remain mobile.

It still won't have the software support the DS enjoys. I bought more games in 6 months for my DS than for my PSP in 1 1/2 years.
I wonder if the stylus will be hooked into the DS unit with something that would be part a strap to keep you from losing the stylus, and part a power cord to avoid needing separate batteries for it.
Not sure what I think about the concept, though. I can think of half a dozen bad ways to utilize stylus rumble, but I'm not so sure about good ways. (The thing they described in the article didn't sound too interesting to me.)

It's a case of Poe's Law. While you may have been joking in this case, I've seen people make similar arguments with full sincerity.
Even by calling the other side single minded if they disagreed... I would laugh but it's the youth who are saying such things and one of those will probably be driving a bus or something else important when they are older... This worries me greatly.

Plus Nintendo has Pokemon.
Really, I had a DS didn't really enjoy it. I mean yeah it was fun playing Resident Evil and Super Mario 64, but I preferred the psp. Each to their own I suppose. Still Psp has monster hunter and MGS and little big planet. Which makes it my favourite Console. Also I like all the weird games like the idea of games like patapon and loco roco. not like I own those games or anything
Some form of force feedback is great for on-the-couch game systems, but for something that's designed to be used outside of that environment it seems to me that rumble will only reduce the accuracy of the player, which is already a bit of an issue in certain circumstances. Though if the rumble isn't too strong it won't be an issue (and I guess they can't really put a whole lot of rumble-power into a little stylus anyway).
I am however certain that I don't like the "The basic premise of wireless technology being used to alter the DS stylus' functionality paints a future for it to become less a "stick," and more of a controller" bit. Using a stylus as a sort of Wiimote-light would just be awkward.

You should! Patapon was fucking amazing.
I do have them. Well I have patapon not loco roco. The demo put me off it, It was all too happy... I thought it was too happy like the smiling physco that stabs you and eats your soul.
That's...confusing. I mean sure force feedback sounds good on paper but when you have to be precise it's not a good idea to put it on a stylus.
However, suppose it only works when it's holstered into the DS, i.e. providing force feedback when you don't need to use the stylus? I'm sure that's not the direction they're going in, unfortunately, but still.
Interesting idea. We'll see how it pans out in practice.
However Nintendo, please make the DS2 more adaptable to the hands. I can't hold your current handheld, and miss the days of the GBA with it's.... holdability.

But the backlit screen makes gaming sooooooooo much better!

The GBA SP had that too. And I could still hold that properly (though it was a tad small for my tastes.)
