Doom Creator John Carmack Gets GDC Lifetime Achievement

image

John Carmack, the brains behind the FPS-defining Doom and Wolfenstein 3D, will be honored for his contributions to gaming at GDC with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

John Carmack is a lot of things. He's the co-founder and legendary technical director of id Software who designs and codes iPhone ports for his titles because he feels like it. He's a genuine award-winning rocket scientist. He's also the man behind Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake, titles that defined an era and kickstarted the FPS, arguably the most prolific genre we see today.

For his "contributions to the art and science of games," Carmack will be honored at next month's Game Developers Conference 2010 with a Lifetime Achievement Award, to be presented by another industry luminary, Will Wright. According to the official press release:

The Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes the career and achievements of developers who have made an indelible impact on the craft of game development, as Carmack has done for his more than two decades of groundbreaking technical contributions, and his role establishing the first-person shooter genre with landmark titles like Doom and Quake.

The choice to award the Lifetime Achievement Award to Carmack was made by a panel of notable people in the industry including BioWare's Dr. Ray Muzyka, PopCap's John Vechey, and Ubisoft's Clint Hocking. When he receives said award on March 11th, Carmack will join a very elite club that includes names like Shigeru Miyamoto, Sid Meier, and Will Wright (who will, in fact, be the one giving Carmack the award).

I certainly can't disagree with the choice to honor Carmack with this award, because the man has played a hugely instrumental role in establishing the modern games industry as we know it. There was a good while where FPS titles were all called "Doom clones" before we settled on "First-Person Shooter," much like how sandbox games were called "Grand Theft Auto clones" in the earlier... actually, we still call them that, don't we? Huh.

The most incredible part about the whole thing is that Carmack doesn't turn 40 until this August - he's earned a Lifetime Achievement Award at the age of 39. Impressive - and congratulations, John Carmack, you've certainly earned it.

I wonder who will be up next year?

So how many points is that achievement worth?

Can't say he hasn't earned it, I'm impressed.

Good work. Doesn't he have enough money to retire yet...

Few people even have the technical knowledge to grasp just how absurd it was for a single guy to stay so far out ahead for so long. Computer hardware was turning over at an amazing pace back in the 90's, and each new generation required a different solution. He was essentially an inventor, even long before he got involved with the rocket stuff. He was inventing new tricks and techniques to make 3d visuals possible long before people thought we had the hardware to pull it off.

He's no longer the only guy blowing our minds with new graphics, although to be fair other companies have a lot more people working for a lot longer to keep up with him.

Congratulations John Carmack, you've earned it.

This guy is totally a genius. He deserves the prize.

I can only agree with what has been said, he is well deserved of the award and I'm only surprised it didn't happen sooner.

For a moment I thought you meant John Romero. I can never remember all these developers...

That would've been bad.

Carmack is cool, though.

John Carmack absoultely deserves this honor. What he did in terms of helping create a genre and how he advanced graphics and network gaming is just amazing.

If you are interested in learning more about this guy there is a book called "Masters of Doom" that you can pick up. It's a really interesting read about Carmack and Romero, and gives some great backstory about what they did.

I'm honestly surprised he hadn't gotten it earlier. The man's a genius.

Not only has he been coding all these games, but he has also been releasing most of the source code for free, making way for a lot of cool games and engines running on everything from your cell phone to your toaster.

But Carmack never made anyone his bitch!

He does however totally deserve this more than anyone else in the industy.

Definetly! Well done to him!

Awesome! Certainly a very good candidate for the award. Bravo to him!

bleep bloop

achievement unloc... reads other posts *yea im good at multi tasking* "Son of a!"

He deserves it.

Ah DOOM.... so many demon killing memories.

Clearly a conspiracy against Peter Molyneux.

He deserves this a whole lot more.

Hopefully we get a video of him accepting the award and giving a speech. It's nice hearing from him once in a while.

I wish I was born 10 years earlier, in Austin Texas. Those were the computer gaming pionieering years. It must have been awesome experiencing that time when graphics went from stick-figures to real 3D.

Carmack was not only there, he was the one constantly pushing the limits of what anyone thought possible. For me, experiencing the demon-slaying masterpiece that was Doom was as awe-inspiring as a moon landing.
Definitively a price well deserved.

I vote for Richard Garriott as next candidate.

Inb4 he takes over the world.

Good on him. He definitely deserves it. Will there be a free podcast or whatever of this? It sounds like a fun event.
