Space Invaders Movie Might Be On Its Way

Warner Bros. is attempting to acquire the rights to make a film based on Taito's Space Invaders.

Hollywood has tired of making bad Uwe Boll films using the intellectual property from current videogames and are keen on destroying nostalgia completely by making movies based on 80s arcade games. Deals are apparently in place for films to be made based on Missile Command and Asteroids, at Fox and Universal respectively. And now, according to the L.A. Times, Warner Bros. wants to make a film based on Space Invaders.

If Warner Bros. is successful in acquiring the rights from Taito, they already have a producing team in place: Mark Gordon, Jason Blum and Guymon Casady. Those three names have the right mix of film credits, having worked on Saving Private Ryan, The Day After Tomorrow and Paranormal Activity.

It's unclear what the story would be for a film based on Space Invaders. Technically, any number of movies could fit the bill already such as Independence Day or Mars Attacks.

As long as it has a turret that shoots things, and a field of slow-moving aliens attacking in coordinated rows and columns then I'll be happy.

But it'll probably just star Jake Gyllenhowdydoody and have a few ships flying around. *sigh*

I hope all gamers everywhere can join me in a universal *Facepalm*.

Wait. Really?

Wha-

What on EARTH made anyone think this is a good idea?

The Futurama version will be better.

"I still have a few tricks up my sleeve. Now, watch, as I FIRE THROUGH MY OWN SHIELD!"

Also, Sapce Invaders? Come on, Greg.

I'll see your facepalm and raise you a facedesk.

What have these people been drinking?
They'll never beat that Futurama episode.
EDIT: Ninja'd by a ninja who ninjas things.

Oh my god yes! ive been waiting for them to do this for year!! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!*fanboy squeal*
[/sarcasm]

yeah pretty much this.

Meh, I'll get excited when they do Pong, not before.

how... exactly... are you meant to make SPACE INVADERS into a movie?!

Seriously, how do they even do that? It doesn't even have a plot.

*faceknife* what do you say to tha... oh fuck my face!

Dear god! If I learn that Jack Black will be playing the voice of the UFO, I'm going to shoot myself.

At least there is no plot for Hollywood to foul up.
It can't be worse than all the other video game movies that have been made.
And I think you meant to say Space Invaders in the headline, not Sapce Invaders.

I really hope they build up a load of suspense about aliens invading, have an epic battle preparation and then the screen cuts to classic space invaders for an hour, then a sad part when it loses a life, back to space invaders, then a huge celebration of victory.

That would be amazing.

I need the job to direct that movie. It would be the greatest thing anyone ever saw, and yet very few people would like it.

No.
(I'm sorry for the low content reply, but that's all my brain can squeeze out.)

I was going to facepalm, but I was already hunched over so I went straight to facedesk.

So it's Tron... but with a spaceship instead of a bike. And aliens.

I would willingly watch an hour and half of rows of slow-moving aliens being shot by a sliding turret...

What?

What is this I don't even...

UGH, God no.

Must-rent-movie

I don't know why, and I'm pretty sure they'll butcher it somehow, but the idea of Space Invaders: The Movie sounds to funny to pass on.

AGH MY FACE!

It hurts!

The idea of making such old games like Asteroids and Space Invaders into movies confuses me.

For one, these games have virtually no story. There are no protagonists, antagonists, or any characters for that matter. We just have moving pixels with no feelings or personalities. There's nothing to work with. Then movie won't be able to last a minute without adding new things to the story. And it has to stretch itself out to be at least an hour long, so who knows what they're going to do to accomplish this. Basing movies off of an incredibly dated game always has you running into the problem of having to re-imagine all of those old pixel graphics in the modern age of cinema, probably with 3D as well.

What you end up with is something that only resembles the original game in an incredibly vague way. It won't be a Space Invaders movie, it will just be a movie called Space Invaders. And what's the point of that? To sell the movie based on the name? The first problem I see with that is that many people don't know or remember what Space Invaders is. The second problem is that everyone who does remember what it is know that you can;t make a movie out of Space Invaders. So really, what's the point? To attract attention based on the fact that you're making an old game into a movie? That's not really the best publicity as tons of people won't give a toss about that, and in the end you're just setting yourself up for failure.

Look at the Super Mario Bros. movie. Despite the time it was made in, it still failed horribly. Mostly because the story for Super Mario Bros. was so bare that the directors had almost nothing to work with. The result was something that only vaguely resembled the Super Mario Bros. game. Now imagine what they are going to do with Space Invaders, an even older game with the most primitive story imaginable.

Oh God, he's said it!

NooooOOOOoooooOOOOOoooooOOOO.

I predict a Keanu Reeves/Megan Fox vehicle.

So Transformers all over again then?

Ow.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat!? No way is this a good idea haha

Besides the only good movie out of that list is Saving Private Ryan.

Dig Dug would make an infinitely better movie, anyway.

It was the inspiration behind "The Last Starfighter".

Which worked so good that Disney recycled it as the backstory for Buzzlightyear!

Oh, this is a joke, right? This has to be a joke. Because no self-respecting Hollywood producer would even think about promoting a movie about an arcade game that was about as complicated as tic-tac-toe.

AkJay:
I hope all gamers everywhere can join me in a universal *Facepalm*.

Way ahead of you. Films based on these games will only prove what most of us have already figured out:
Great games make bad movies. Great movies make bad games.
