Valve: Portal 2 is Our Best Game Ever

image

Portal 2 will be more than a return to Aperture, it'll also be the best project Valve has ever done.

It would be an understatement to say that Valve makes good videogames. With Half-Life, Half-Life 2, Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress, Portal, and various other extremely popular games under its diamond-encrusted belt, the company is always at the top of its game. So, what does it mean when Valve says that Portal 2 is going to be its best product ever? It means that you should probably get some money out right now.

1up was able to take a few minutes with Valve top dog Gabe Newell at GDC this week, where he made it clear that Portal 2 is planned as a pretty big project. After the success of Portal, he says: "We got the signals that we wanted -- this is what people liked; this is what people didn't like. And to us, it was like, 'OK now we know how to take this big,' so that's what we're going to do with Portal 2."

Already, Newell feels: "Portal 2's great. It's the best game we've ever done." Why does he think this? "It's pretty clear, just internally," he says. From the company that basically changed the FPS genre, this is a huge statement.

In addition, as if it wasn't expected, Newell hints that Jonathan Coulton will be back in Portal 2. Coulton composed "Still Alive," the popular ending song from the original Portal that is still being covered by legions of YouTube users today. "Jonathan Coulton is awesome -- he's just brilliant; he's a joy to work with," Newell teased. When asked if there would be another Coulton song in Portal 2, Newell only said: "He's brilliant." That's a yes.

I don't know about everyone else, but after also reading about Portal 2's leaked details, I'm more than a little excited to equip my portal gun again.

....Really?

Fuck it, I'm getting hyped. No! I'm getting delirious!

I WANT THIS GAME! I WANT IT NOW!

I should probably get some money out now? I always have money ready for you, Valve.

This is going to be... Portal.

Does anything else really need to be said?

They listened to what the fans liked?

It's going to be full of Weighted Companion Cubes and cake jokes. Calling it now.

Well so far I've seen a lot of cynicism directed at this game, but I personally think it's going to be fantastic. It probably won't have the same effect as it did when we all booted up that portal gun for the very first time, but even so, I'm optimistic here. I'm hoping for big things.

Everyone get on the hype train, mm'kay!

I think that's more of a reference to the style of humor, not specific jokes.

This just makes me think it will be worse than expected.

It's just how I work.

So Portal 2 will be bigger than HL3?!
AWESOME.
I look forward to its realese.

*offers Valve a bag of cash*

Valve has never been the type of company to overhype its games. Color me very excited.

But I also want my next Half-Life game, goddammit!

Ah Valve... they grow up so fast <=)

I think Peter Molenyux (sp?) just invaded their marketing department.

I am far too excited for this game I think I might explode.

Apparently they're focusing a lot more on sound this time around with Coulton. It was something along the lines of keeping the ambience and the atmospheric music from Portal 1 but making it even better. I'm rediculously happy that Portal can be called Portal 1 now.

Lets.. just wait and see if it lives up to the expectations. I sure hope it does.

The cake is a truth.

Fact.

Hmm... before I read the details I thought it was going to be some kinda of L4D/TF2/Portal abomination... with Freeman making a cameo.

Now...where did I put my special "Valve fund".....

Cajt:
Everyone get on the hype train, mm'kay!

ALL ABOARD! CHOO CHOO

Seriously want this

Distorted Stu:

AWESOME.

That doesn't make much sense.

OT: I love Valve so much that sometimes it hurts my insides :(

Okay... if this is true we'll forgive you for not releasing Episode 3... AGAIN!

Calumon: Playing with portals must be fun! I can make it so the slide at the playground never ever ends! Or in Soccer I always score! YAY! I WANNA PLAY!

Valve has got even Calumon excited ^^

Well, this better be a triumph, or even better, a huge success, because, so far, I've found it hard to overstate my satisfaction. And, yes, I had to do that.

Must... contain... joy... must...

I think I shall have to pass unless this is a budget game. (<30$) The first was good in short doses but by the end (an hour and a half or so) it was getting pretty old.

There's more features, more story, and many more characters. Did I mention all the characters are those spheres that lit up in the end, as well as GLaDOS? Yes, she is still alive.

I have no doubt that this is going to be Valve's best game ever; this game is the most recent and thus has the most experience behind it. I would, however, like to even hear a Valve employee SAY "Half life 2 Episode 3".

I think the universe just imploded.

OT: Two words: Holy shit. Either Gabe thinks really it's crap just wants to sell a shitload of copies before people catch wind, or we really have something big to look forward to. Still not forgiving you for the lack of detail concerning HL2: Ep 3 though, Gabe. ;)

your train better stop at Middlesbrough train station i want to get on!

*buys ticket and goes to platform 2*

this is gunna be amazing, i hope they have a multi-player mode and not just co-op hehe

Cajt:
Everyone get on the hype train, mm'kay!

Tickets, please! Tickets! Last call to board the hype train before it leaves the station!

No, but seriously, damn ninjas.

I'm still a little apprehensive over this. If the hype train's starting this early, this may not bode well for the actual game...

hmmm sounds good, but could it be better then Team Fortress 2? Its gonna have to try very hard I think.

unfortunately Valve has made me into a fanboy, so I would have bought the game even if they said it wasn't their best.

I think Valve is counting it's chickens before they hatch.

But fuck that, this is Valve. I want Portal 2 so much... I really hope it comes out this year.

I hope this is coming out on PS3. Although Valve have stated that they hate the PS3, so that probably won't happen.
