Voice of Half-Life 2's Dr. Breen Dies, Aged 79

image

Actor Robert Culp, who may be most recognizable to gamers as the voice of Half-Life's Dr. Breen, passed away earlier today at the age of 79.

According to authorities, Robert Culp had been in the middle of taking a walk near his home in Los Angeles, California earlier today, when he fell and hit his head. The septuagenarian actor was discovered by a passing jogger, and rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly afterward.

A veteran actor, Culp had quite a few recognizable roles to his name, from playing tennis star-cum-secret-agent Kelly Robinson opposite Bill Cosby in the 1960s TV series I Spy, to FBI Agent Bill Maxwell in the 1981-1983 series The Greatest American Hero, to the antique-collecting father of the bride in modern sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond.

But gamers will know Culp best as the voice of Half-Life 2 antagonist Dr. Wallace Breen, the scientist who was the liaison to the Combine and the administrator of the occupied Earth. Breen was presumably killed in the destruction of his Citadel at the end of Half-Life 2: Episode One, but he was still a memorable villain to anyone who played the celebrated shooter.

RIP, Dr. Breen. You will be missed.

Oh god why!!! POR QUE!!!!!!!!!

that sucks, i kinda wanted to hear Dr Breen to say "oh god not this again!" Then we kill him again. woo.

I was just thinking of making a source mod from his point of view...
Can't help but feel that now it would be in a bit of bad taste.

Damn, that sucks.

Seems like celebrities are still dying off at an alarming rate.

At least he didn't die in the explosion of the plasma-type-thing core of an alien monolith building.

RIP Breen's Voice

one tear....

I can't wait to see this reflected on in After Curfew with Dr. Breen.

Well, guess it was his time to go. Too bad.

If he was supposed to make an appearance in HL2:E3 I sure hope that they recorded it already.
(I know it wouldn't make sense though)

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. This is horrible! Poor guy. Who could do Dr.Breen now?!

No..... no. I was really expecting Breen to return in some way. He's awesome. RIP Mr. Culp.

He didn't deserve to die...

Rest in Peace, and thank you for one amazing video game villain.

NOOOOOO.... he was so excited about possibly making a comeback in a new game, too....

A moment of silence for a worthy adversary and a great man.

R.I.P.

Not that I really care too much...I mean...It's only Breen. They'll get a replacement somehow...

I hope Valve wasn't planning on using him. Then again, this is what happens when you take too much time on something...

I was going to make a joke about Valve doing this but poor guy died today.
R.I.P.

RIP sweet prince, I'll miss you.

RIP. You will always be one of the best villains in a game.

I heard this on the radio
but he played Dr. Breen
Nooooooo. That was in my top 10 favorite voices of all time
R.I.P.

Oh my god, that sucks. What's Valve going to do about this?

Anyway, R.I.P.

Damn, the world as a whole has suffered a great loss today.

But it seems that he either wasn't cast in HL2:Ep3 (Plymouth 0) or Valve haven't done anything all to it yet.

Hmm....wonder what Shamus will do now.

Did they say the cause of death, or was it just the blow to the head?

but.. i thought it was supposed to be safer here. =(

...sigh. I liked Culp way back in the day of The Greatest American Hero. The fact that he voiced Wallace Breen was icing on his awesomecake. And how does he go out? He falls and hits his head.

Not good enough, I say. He deserved a city-destroying explosion to see him off. Sometimes reality sucks.

Such a pity, great voice actor.

GORDON FREEMAN!

We will never hear these words the same way again.

Wait.... wrong doctor

RIP

A pirty too loose such a great voice acter.

Damn. Truly it is a pity. Rest in peace good man, you have left us with found memories. I shall have a drink in memory of your greatness.

OffTopic: Wonder how it will affect next Stolen Pixels? He is right in the middle of "Dr. Breen's talk show" right now.

Rip Dr.Breen

Maybe some garry's mod will cheer this up a bit

I hate to say it, but at the very least it eliminates that stupid idea that happened to get around the Dr. breen would be in episode 3.

What a way to go...throughts to his family and loved ones...

He played a good part and did his role proud!

R.I.P Breen, we hardly knew ye'.
