Bulgarian City Councilor Fired Over FarmVille

image

A councilor from the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv has been fired from his municipal committee because he refused to stop playing FarmVille during city council meetings.

The trouble first came to light a few weeks ago when several Plovdiv city councilors were caught playing FarmVille during debates over the city's 2010 budget. Council Chair Ilko Iliev "strongly scolded the eager internet farmers," who nonetheless continued to spend time on their farms while attending council meetings.

Finally, during a meeting last Thursday, councilor Dimitar Kerin, described as "the most persistent FarmVille enthusiast," was voted off his municipal committee because, said fellow councilor Todor Hristov, he "needs more time for his virtual farm." While Kerin will remain on council, he will lose the additional pay he was earning as a member of the committee.

But he's not leaving without a fight. "The troubled councilor has defended himself by saying he was not the only one in the City Hall watering virtual egg plants," according to a report by Novinte.com. "He said he had reached only Level 40, whereas Daniela Zhelyazkova, a councilor from the rightist Democrats for Strong Bulgaria party, was already at Level 46."

So maybe the problem here isn't that Kerin is playing too much FarmVille. Maybe he got fired because he sucks.

another reason to dislike farmville...
addictive like crack.
well, my wife and daughter like it but they can keep it.
not for me thanks.

It's not even that addictive...Shit. Give them Harvest Moon.

It's better by miles. And has depth.

Harvest Moon would DESTROY the government!

Eh, serves him right.

Anyone on this site who knows me in the slightest knows I hate Farmville with the burning passion of a thousand suns.

Viva le Revolucion?

Hilarious.

I love the school-child excuse he gave. "But miss. Daniela was doing it worse!"

That doesn't justify his wrong actions.

Agreed. But which Harvest Moon? The N64 version was the one that stole my life more than the rest combined.

Damn......playing in the middle of a session (from how i understand it)! Damn it must be boring in there.

I was thinking of something portable. For the boardroom, you see.

Simfarm, ages ago was my favourite. As for these news, I guess politics are boring and farmville is still far more interesting them discussing a budget. Not more important tho. :P

Good for Bulgaria, I wouldn't want any one who has influence on how my country works playing farm ville during council meetings...

Makes me wonder what my own governments up to.*goes off to check*...........huh, still not doing much in the way of anything. Well, that's that's Canada for you.
I wonder what would happen if we gave them Spore or even The Sims? Heh, ironic, shirking municipal responsibility to play Sim City.

I'd say firing anyone for playing farmville is a perfectly justifiable reason.

Ugh, Bulgaria is so corrupt and useless. This story just encourages my lack of faith in their government, plus Farmville isn't even that good.

But how do you know their not?? Do you know what your government is up to??? Right now?!?!?!

To be fair all of them who were playing it probably should have been fired instead of just picking on one guy.

ONLY LEVEL 40?!?!?

GOD DAMN - he was probably spending all of his extra pay on Zynga dollars!

hahahhahah.... canīt stop laughing... hahahahhahahahhaha

Well he was given fair warning...his problem.

Still his retort is hilarious!! Made me laugh so hard!

BUT SIR! SIR! I WASN'T THE ONLY ONE! DANIELA WAS DOING IT TOO!

I rofl'd.
Good one sirs, good one.

My face hurts from facepalming so hard...
It's nice to see famous and influential people playing video games, but this kind of thing doesn't give us a good reputation either.

I know for a fact that it is often played by United States Senators and Representatives.

Anyway, I'm not one to judge. I mean I'm in a lecture right now and I'm blogging on the Escapist.

If he wants to get others involved then the best thing to do is get rid of their collective asses for wasting time.

At home you may partake in whatever (legal) activity you please; the workspace is a completely different environment. The clue is in the name.

But in all seriousness this is hilarious. What did he expect would happen? If I did that in my completely inconsequential school time I'd get thrown out of the lesson and banned from the internet! It stands to reason that playing this game during a meeting discussing a budget that will affect a whole city should at least lose him some pay!

My god you're right! I love Harvest Moon :D

God damn it, who said "Harvest Moon" first? Now I've to find my GBC copy and try to launch it on my GBA...

I must confess (and be ashamed) that I like Facebook, but I H.A.T.E. Farmville... I just don't see any appeal on watering virtual egg plants... Also for the Harvest Moon thing, I've never played any HM, but for the looks of it, Animal Crossing is mostly the same... Please, don't hit me in the face, anywhere but the face...

on a slightly related note, anyone played rune factory, i heard it was like harvest moon but with the occasional hitting things with a spade?
