Who Will Be the Next Bond?

The suspension of "Bond 23," the new James Bond film that's trapped in development limbo thanks to the uncertain future of MGM, has led to a new and rather unexpected question: Has Daniel Craig's time come to an end?

Daniel Craig's selection as the new James Bond was met with a certain amount of trepidation among fans, but that went out the window in a hurry when Casino Royale, his first turn in the role, proved to be one of the best Bond films to come along in years. It was a major departure from the series and, in the eyes of many, a welcome respite from the gadget-driven glibness the franchise had taken on while in the care of Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan.

But production on his third Bond movie, code-named Bond 23, has been halted "indefinitely" while the mess at MGM gets sorted out and while there's no question that another Bond film will be made, and little doubt at this point that Craig will star, the possibility that he may be replaced if the delay grows too long is suddenly being kicked around.

As the BBC notes, previous lengthy breaks between films in recent years have resulted in new actors taking over the role: Craig took over from Brosnan following a four-year gap between Die Another Day and Casino Royale, while Brosnan inherited the job from Timothy Dalton after a six-year hiatus between License to Kill and GoldenEye. If the MGM trouble drags on, could it be that Craig will be out after only two films? And if so, who will step in to take over?

According to British bookie William Hill, the number one choice is Sam Worthington, best known for his work in Terminator Salvation, Avatar and Clash of the Titans, and who actually screen tested for Casino Royale but was beaten out by Craig. Following him is Welsh actor Christian Bale of Dark Knight and bad temper fame, and, believe it or not, Will Smith. Yes, that Will Smith.

Boy, I sure hope Daniel Craig comes back.

Wow. I seriously hope Christian Bale does not get this part if they decide to get rid of Craig. I did like Worthington in Terminator though, he might be able to pull off Bond.

I would much prefer Will Smith than Christian Bale.

Calumon: The Fresh Prince beats Mr Shouty!

Oh dear... I love Daniel Craig. He's a refreshing change from Brosnan, who was good in Goldeneye and The World is Not Enough but not in the others. Die Another Day was terrible... Just terrible.

I guess I could see Worthington or Bale doing it, but they seem kind of generic. But Will Smith? That's just catering to those people that say it's racist for Bond to always be white... Smith is fine in movies like Bad Boys II, that are action-comedies. But James Bond..? Imagine the uproar if a Fresh Prince of Bel-Air movie was made with Daniel Craig playing him.

Will...Smith? Heh, I dont think so...seriously.

As for Christian Bale, I could see that, definetly

They better keep Daniel Craig on. The guy has done a fantastic job as the new 'gritty and dark' Bond.

But Will Smith? Seriously? No. Just no

Holy fuck, and I was going to make a joke post suggesting Will Smith...

Now I've actually read the article and ouch.

Meh, why the hell not. It's just James Bond.

It should be me!

Sam Worthington? Fuck that! The guy can't hardly act.

Christian Bale? Hell no! Is he gonna continue his bullshit grizzly bear batman voice as Bond as well?

And Will Smith? Are you kidding???

I dont like Daniel craig much but I would like to see Will Smith playing Bond just for the reaction to everyone when they found out. As I say Daniel Craig is killing the Bond series 1 movie at a time.

It should have died with Sean Connery!

Whoever suggested Will Smith should be drawn and quartered... metaphorically....

I nominate Steve Buscemi.

Will Smith would only work as Bond if they definitely establish that Fan theory that James Bond is a Code Name that is passed down to each new 007 along with the 007 number.

And only if he had a British Commonwealth accent. I for one would never tolerate a Bond without at least a Commonwealth accent. But not Canadian... (And I'm American)

I'm think Bale would work if he wasn't shouting or angry for most of it. (And no Batman voice like in Terminator Salvation...)

Worthington would be fine.

I'm sorry, but if Will Smith gets it, I have forever lost faith in the James Bond name. I still cannot forgive him for what he's doing to Karate Kid... ugh..... and here comes the rage again.

But I hope Craig maintains the spot. He's done an excellent job, I think he's the best Bond in quite a while.

Will Smith? =)

Bale and Worthington are OK-ish choices, but I'd preffer a fresh face, like Craig was when he first started playing Bond.

As for Will Smith playing James Bond, if that happens I demand that there be a new "Shaft" movie in which the titular role is played by Mike Myers...

WILL SMITH?!!! thats the end of Bond as we know it.

I puked a bit in my mouth when you said Will Smith. Him as Bond is like using McDonalds ingredients to make entrecôte. And with the rest alternatives, I'd rather keep Daniel.

R: Do try to bring some of my gadgets back in one piece this time.
Bond: Ah HELL naw!
R: Oh for heavens sake 007 this isn't the ghetto. We drink our tea on time and we hold our gun right side up.

Will Smith? NO NO A MILLION TIMES NO. Worthington and Bale i know little about worthington but i'm sure i can handle him and Bale? Well he might be a drunken shouty man but he has the look of a potential bond.

doesn't bother me, i wasn't overly keen on Daniel Craig. he was OK but if h gets replaced i won't sign a petition to get him to stay. i like Casino Royale during the card game and stuff but after that it went downhill. Quantam of Solace was meh, too.

I hope a black guy plays the next bond. I'm kinda tired of all the whiteys on the screen pretending to be playboys and saving the world....

After having watched Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace, I can't imagine anyone else but Craig in the lead role. :-(

Apparently Will Smith explicitly said once that he would like to be the first black James Bond, which is incredibly stupid. Not being racist or anything, but it's the equivalent of wanting to hire Vanilla Ice to play Bob Marley in a biopic...

I too would demand that, hell I also agree with your suggestion of keeping fresh faces. An established A list Actor means you'll be watching the actor rather than the character. They should just keep to their tradition of getting actors who are great but just haven't broken into the A leagues yet.

Though i'd prefer them to keep Daniel Craig, as I think he's a great actor I'm going to go ahead and suggest Jamie Bamber, just cos i'm a battlestar galactica whore :D

Well, they are playing British. *sound of crickets*

Chase Yojimbo:

so true... Daniel Craig is like the Vladimir Putin of movies, and Christian Bale will remain being Batman.

Bah! Who needs Bond nowadays? Bourne showed up and kicked ass. His style is more contemporary and awesome. He lives in a society filled with cameras and surveillance (quite like ours) but needs nothing but his wits to pwn n00bs.

They should shelve Bond. Bourne is here to stay.

Excluding the obvious, Will Smith isn't even British, and I doubt he'd be able to pull off the accent - it ends up somewhere between uproariously posh (I'm only merely roariously posh after all) and cockney when Americans try it.

Sam Worthington looks slimy and untrustworthy in that picture, and Christian Bale is... well... Christian Bale.

Sam Worthington - meh.
Christian Bale - meh.
Will Smith - wait, what? Actually, he might be able to pull it off, provided he leaves the whole Fresh Prince persona behind and can manage a convincing English accent.

Well James Bond has to be English so go figure.

Oh and the world will be destroyed by the LHC before Will Smith is 007.

Neil Patrick Harris should be the next James Bond

especially over that Sam Worthington prick

I wouldn't mind Sam Worthington, nor would I have a problem with Bale. I like them both far more than the previous two Bonds.
Not saying they were bad.

I really hope MGM pick this up ASAP, because frankly, I think that if they've hit money troubles, the collective £13.90 from every other wallet in the UK will help a little.

And I'm not sure about an American Bond...
It would seem weird, and unnatural.
That said, if Will Smith played Bond it would certainly give the theorists a bit of non-official confirmation.

You get a cookie for the stealth-witty social commentary.

Although truth be told, Will Smith has way more charisma than Sam Worthington and Christian Bale, and I think the Bond character is best served with that kind of actor. If Craig was out, I wouldn't mind seeing Jason Statham take a crack at it. I think he fits the bill for the character on a lot of the points.

Sam Worthington?

Errrrrrrrrrrrrr... No. For a start it needs to be a Brit, and it can't be Will Smith; it is the same person, sure the actor's change but having a black american in the role would be ridiculous.*

Craig's the best bond by far - and I can't imagine him leaving the films after only 2 (despite this delay).

* For obvious, non-racist reasons before someone jumps on that.

Riiiiiiight...

Huh?

Who ever's idea it was to have Will Smith play James Bond... should be killed, no trail... no jury... no arrest, just flat out killed. Some one walk in with a Desert Eagle and do him/her with it... don't even speak to it, just walk in and shoot it. Put the world at ease.

Okay now that I've got my psychotic thought out of the way... I'd like either Sam or Bale... I guess they could all fit the role, Bales a good actor and Sam's a good new actor too.

Woodsey:
Sam Worthington?

Erm, wasn't George Lazenby Australian? he played James Bond before. Besides Aussies can pull off a British accent pretty well if they want to.
