Creators Reveal Secrets of Monkey Island in Second Remake

A telling commentary track by the original creators of Monkey Island 2 has been added to its upcoming remake.

The secrets of Monkey Island are many, but some may be revealed with the upcoming release of Monkey Island 2 Special Edition: LeChuck's Revenge, a remake/upgrade of the original 1991 game. Unlike the special edition of The Secret of Monkey Island, Monkey Island 2 Special Edition will include a commentary track by the game's original, and some might say awesome, creators.

Though the track was known to be coming before, thanks to GameSpot we know it'll feature the trio of Tim Schafer, Ron Gilbert, and Dave Grossman. All three worked on the now classic adventure game Monkey Island 2 twenty years ago and are back to share hidden thoughts and behind-the-scenes information in the commentary track.

Schafer, Gilbert, and Grossman are all onto their own new projects varying from Schafer's Brutal Legend to Gilbert's Deathspank to Grossman's work at Telltale games on Sam & Max and the Tales of Monkey Island series. They're pretty thrilled with the Monkey Island remakes, especially because they include the original games along with new HD versions.

As for what makes people consider Monkey Island 2 one of the best adventure games of all time, Schafer believes it has everything to do with: "The spitting contest," he says. "No other game had spitting in their game, really. Maybe I'm just biased because I wired that part up. But I thought it was the best part of the game. Now that I'm thinking about it, 'Spitting Contest' would make a great Natal game." Agreed on all counts.

Ron Gilbert seems to think it was due to the game's "two hundred and fifty six color graphics" instead. Either way, those interested in more Schafer, Gilbert, and Grossman thoughts will want to play the Monkey Island 2 Special Edition when it's released in Summer 2010.

Wait. Wait.
Commentary track? ala VALVe games?

In MY Monkey Island 2?

I just came a little. Where do you say I have to sell my soul for this?

P.S. Tom, I have your avatar.

MINE, THE NU IS MIIIIIINEEEEE.

Hehe, I always find these fun so should at least give me something to chuckle about.

I know its kinda geeky but I loved the L4D ones!

Though I am a MI fan, I didn't really feel the need to buy the first game again.
In my eyes the original version is still perfectly fine.
Of course not everybody got to play the game back then, and advertising my favourite genre from that time is a good thing, so I am still happy the game was remade.

Now that I'm reading about the second game's commentary track... I am much more interested.

Awesomesauce on an Awesomeburger.

What made MI2 good? His goatee. yeah

Mastering the art of proper spit challenges based on different grog ingredients never gets old.

Allowing one to switch between classic and current graphics is a neat trick to get me to buy this game again. Adding commentary makes this even more worth my $$$. I just hope it's better than the lame required commentary dvds get. Put some effort into it!!

The hint system works great too! Better to have a button to help you, than having to try every command w/ every object, on every selectable thing.

These classic games from my youth make me proud to be a gamer! Let us not stop w/ Monkey Island!!!

If they had a "Coming soon pre-order" note on Steam I would have bought this already. Loved playing SoMI:SE, it was a beautiful blast of nostalgia and I cant wait to play the second one again.

That's awesome! Monkey Island remains to this day one of my favorite franchises of all time.

Awesome anyone think they will make a Dig remake?
