Show me a better actor thats Persian.

Eldritch Warlord:
It's very relevant to a discussion about someone complaining about a white guy playing an ancient Persian, because an ancient Persian would be a white guy. I know that's not exactly common knowledge but it's been said on every page of this thread besides the first.

The simple and obvious fact of the matter is that this is not whitewashing, this is just good casting.

Which brings me back to my earlier point: he would perhaps be white(-ish), but not western.

They could have at least hired someone in the general ethnic group, instead of using white-y.

I hate to say this but a lot of the really good actors might also have a think accent. While some people don't mind a lot of people find accents hard to track, thus making the film less popular. I wouldn't mind if they got that fellow who played Sayid from lost but it is what it is...

Point.

But, still...if they think the film sucks because the guy has the correct accent for such a movie, then why aren't these people even going to see the movie? Bawwwww for them. If they don't like it, they can get subtitles.

That's a silly priority for casting roles. You choose an actor because you believe that they can act the role effectively. By picking a race first, you're cutting down your choices of who to cast without assesing what the character is like.

Also, I recall the Prince in the Sand of Time trilogy had a distinctly english accent; surely that's what the film is trying to emulate. This filmmaker (whoever the hell he is, I can't seem to find his face on the web) is a bit late to the party.

The film character looks like the game character. Where was the furor over the Mario Bros film for having Bob Hoskins instead of an Italian actor?

Tis nonsense, Hollywood has always and will always make fantastical films that aren't worth worrying about too much.

Move on, there's nothing to see here...

Marmooset:

BarbaricGoose:
No one ever complains about Blackwashing.. Like when Samuel L. Jackson was cast as Nick Fury?

Actually, they did.

And you're complaining about it right now.

If I was complaining about it, I'd have complained about it. I mentioned it, nothing more.

If you see a complaint in my message, you're grasping at straws.

I tend to agree with you but when all the people that don't go to see the film because of that reason equal out to millions of dollars I can see their point. Think of all those foreign films that no one sees because of accent or subtitles. They only make a little money if they win an oscar. Even those ones don't earn a lot. But like I said I still wouldn't mind that fellow from Lost play the role.

I don't care, he looks like a good prince and Gyllenhaal is a great actor.

I haven't seen PoP yet, but it more annoys me that they gave him a name, and the name is pretty gay.

You might have heard of a people from northern India (though their name now holds a massive taboo because of some square moustached mono-balled Austrian retard): Aryans

Was the Prince in the Sands of Time games Persian or white? He looked pretty white to me. It doesn't really make sense with the setting, but maybe a white actor was chosen in order to be accurate to the games? jake Gyllenhaal does look rather like the prince from Warrior Within to me.

I don't think he knows what whitewashing means..

Isn't white washing was Tom Sawyer was doing to a fence?

Is this the same guy who bitched because King Arthur was filmed in English instead of Latin/Gaelic?

people got too few real issues and worries in their life if this ticks em off :D

didnt see anyone complain that kingpin was been portrayed as a black person in "daredevil" (might be because we had so much else to rage at in that movie :D )

People will always complain about the little things, remember the uproar about Daniel Craig? "Oh no, Bond is blonde! This movies gonna suck!"

I couldn't care less who is in the movies I watch. Obviously I have a few favourite actors, but I prefer to see performances from unknown actors, they all need a chance and there is usually some great tallent waiting to be found.

Even so, Persian or otherwise? I couldn't care less. As long as these people can act and play the part well, who really cares? Jake Gyllenhall was great as the prince, the film itself wasn't great buy hey that's not his fault.

So I can see both sides of the argument here and it isn't one that particularly bothers me.

I'm sure someone has pointed both of these out already, but
1. Persia is not actually a place anymore, so hiring a "Persian" actor is quite impossible.

There's nothing wrong with Gyllenhaal. Or Gyllenhappy. Gyllenhorse? Whatever we're calling him these days.

To be fair though, there wasn't a similar outcry when Clash of the Titans cast only white actors to fill the role even though it was Greek Mythology.

Still I can sort of agree that a white guy being the Prince can seem a little offensive but to be honest if it wasn't a problem to have non greeks playing greeks then it shouldn't be a problem here. Yes if they cast a non black guy to be a black guy that would be offensive but as it stands I don't think its that big of a deal.

Lol we are all aware that "Persia" is no longer a country right? He would have to be an Iraqi or Iranian if you want to get technical.

Prince of Persia was miscast but not because of whiteness...it was miscast because the lead should have been David Belle http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1042642/

David Belle IS the prince in real life. If you haven't already see B13, IMO the best action movie of the 00s

Totally agree, when I was playing PoP I was thinking about district 13, wicked movie and the dude has more impressive jumps than the game

Meh. No different to Jamie Foxx being cast as Lynch (or is it Kane? I forget), the retcon of Kingpin in Daredevil and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury in the later Marvel films, and there's probably other instances of it around.

I don't think it's truly racism as such. I think it's a case of it's a western film made for western audiences, and due to that it'll have predominantly western actors. If the film was made in the "correct" region, it'd be made for that audience with the appropriate nationality/race/whatever actors.

who gives a shit, so long its well acted

The only thing that made the Prince Persian in the games is the title of the game.
SO the prince was white washed long before the movie was even thought of. And if you wanna debate his complexion. Any white guy under the Persian sun for a long enough period of time, can get a tan too!

I agree with his opinion but I think he may have chosen the wrong movie to aim this argument at.

They couldn't find any persians, spartans killed them all

Hollywood owned by white ppl. White ppl will always star as the hero in movies. tis the way of the world.

If u want to split hairs than why does all Ballywood movies star indians?! even when it takes place in a western place?! XD

More angry about Avatar(the last airbender) than anything else i mean like its really that hard to fine a kungfu fighting asian kid? <.< (the Karate Kid had no trouble XD) But whatever i do like how they represent each 'faction' as a different 'race' of ppl.

/unrelated rant

WHY IS THE MOVIE CALLED THE KARATE KID WHEN THE MOVIE IS ALL ABOUT KUNGFU!?!?!?! WTF! >.< i guess to the west Karate and Kungfu are the same <.< (for those of you that do think that, one is japanese and the other chinese, ill let u figure out which is which >.>)

If he was the best one for the role, I'm ok with it.

Quit yer bitchin'

That is all I have to say

It's a real credit to the users of this site when people have explained half a dozen times why they don't need a darker skinned person to play the role and you still get people claiming that they should.

Modern day Persians are blowing each other to bits every day and this moron here decided to dig up racism. Swell...

There is in fact a such thing as looking the part. I dare you to do a movie about Idi Amin and cast Toby Maguire as Idi Amin. Please go do it.

Quoted and bolded for truth. The commercials for Karate kid trip me out since it is quite obviously Kungfu rather than Karate being done. What in the hell were they thinking?

In Dar's opinion, it's a clear case of "whitewashing" - casting white actors to play ethnic characters.

And what makes this a particularly bad thing?

"This part really needed to go to someone who's Persian,"

Why?

Dar said. "It's not only insulting to Persians..."

No, scratch that, it ISN'T insulting to Persians.

...it's also insulting to white people. It's saying white people can't enjoy movies unless the protagonist is white."

No it isn't, it's saying that they wanted Jake Gyllenhaal because he's a good actor. What'll this guy do next, start whining about how the actor playing Niko Bellic in GTA didn't speak Serbian properly and no-one pronounced his name right? pfft.

Good actor > Ethnically correct actor

Good ethnically correct actor > both but it's a little to late to start looking for one.

Good show, seems someone else has already put my own opinion into a snappier form. Now to retreat into the shadows....

I'm actually with him on this one, which surprises me. Would it have been that hard to trawl Bollywood or Europe or even parts of America for a couple of months to get an ethnically correct cast?

It's not a case of non-white actors not being good enough, either (Just look at SlumDog Millionaire.), the producers just didn't bother looking. It's probably more laziness and greed than racism, but there's still a little nugget there.

It's hard to tell with all the stupid angles. What I can say is that he looks a hell of a lot like me and the men on my Mother's side of the family. I'm still only a 2nd generation immigrant here, so the genes haven't been diluted so much, so we still look pretty Persian.

So yeah, I'd say he looks Persian.

Guess not...On topic though I took a look at the trailer for Last Airbender.....How did all of those white people get cast when at least two of the principle characters are pretty dark especially for an Anime? I hope the movie doesn't suck because the show was actually pretty good given the little I saw of it. What is even weirder is that it aired on Nickelodeon and really wasn't that "kiddy" of a show from the little that I saw.
