Gabe Newell: Valve E3 Surprise Isn't Episode 3

image

If you'd been hoping that Valve's June 14th "surprise" would be an unexpected reveal of the long-dormant Half-Life 2: Episode 3, time to hope a little bit harder.

Not too long ago, Valve kicked the internet hype machine into a frenzy by announcing that it was unexpectedly canceling its Portal 2 E3 event - and replacing it with a "surprise." Naturally, this stirred the Valve fanboys into a frothing fury of excitement: What else could this surprise be but a glorious announcement of the seemingly-forgotten Episode 3?!

Well, I don't know what it is - but it's not Episode 3. And that "Freeman: June 14th" picture that's been floating around the tubes? It's fake.

Both of these were confirmed via no less a reputable source than Valve head honcho Gabe Newell, reports Halflife2.net. So sorry, people, time to take off your party hats and put the bubbly away - Episode 3 is still unlikely to see the light of day any time soon.

On the bright side, PC gamers will probably have a damn good year when both Episode 3 and Diablo III release in 2014.

What could the surprise be now? Team Fortress 3? L4D3? Portal 4, a game so awesome it tore a hole in time (the same fate that befell Duke Nukem)? Maybe a brand new game!

Hahahhahahahaha....hahaha....haaaaaa.

Why am I not surprised? Plus, you never know. Could be false-information on Gabe's part. But oh well.

Sadface.... :(

But, seeing how this is Valve, I'm sure the surprise won't let us down.

Saw that one comming, but it would have been nice.

This is just a running gag, isn't it. Valve announces something big, OH SORRY IT ISN'T EPISODE 3. LOL.

Episode 3 has been dead ever since Lonbardi said Valve was going back to the monolithic style development program.
It's probably Half Life 3, or at least the next version of the engine, the one they've been hiring PS3 devs to build.

Then there's always Left 4 Dead 3.

damnnit Gabe, really? No other sequel needs to be made for any of other Valve franchise

This sucks on ice :P

I REALLY hope it's not L4D3. That would be quite irritating.

...I am so dissapointed and angry. Why won't they tell us anything regarding ep 3?

Its Portal related. I am sure enough to think so. The letter that said this surprise was rather styled as if Glados wrote it, and you know she ALWAYS means what she says....

Well, if it isn't Episode 3 or Portal 2, I'll be expecting something brand new.

I doubt we will be seeing a TF3 anytime soon. considering it took TF2 10 years of development hell before it saw the light of day.

Hell, by that logic we will be lucky to ever see HL3.

I'm so indifferent to anything besides Episode 3. Yeah, even towards Portal 2.

Cue fanboy rage.....

VIKING fanboy rage...

As long as it's NOT Counter-Strike I'm sure I'll enjoy it.

This. Maybe they've scrapped the idea of making half a game based on a title that's about six years old, and just made an entirely new HL game. It would make sense - nobody needs three years for what's essentially glorified DLC.

i am CONVINCED that the surprise is the new source Engine, because all the games of valve seem to be in a state of development that a new engine would make sense, cmon valve lets seee

Half life 3
Left 4 Dead 3
Team Fortress 3
Day of Defeat 3
Counter Strike: watchmacallit

I'm betting Half Life 3.

Calumon: We can hope...

Probably a game from Icefrog, as someone said.

Yeah I'm inclined to agree with you there so I'm guessing E3 is going to be more of a Source v2.0 showcase. That might be kind of cool though so we shall see how it all plays out.

Counter strike would certainly be a big surprise, but I doubt it's that. Team fortress for mac, on the new source engine would be pretty sweet, though hardly big enough to be a big surprise.
I'm guessing new IP here, it'd make the most sense.

*snivel* As much as i like valve, i cant help but feel slightly cynical about the whole thing. If you withdraw portal 2 from E3 and say "it's a surprise" instead, then of course people will think it's ep.3. They should straight off the bat say that it's a surprise and it's NOT ep.3.

It completely detracts from the "surprise" when you know that the excitement your causing is about something entirely different. Which i think is a shame.

UNLESS.. they're bluffing aren't they? BLUFFING! They are obviously going to unveil Ep.3 after all! And it's gonna be soooooo good! :) cant wait.

TBH the whole HL2 overhype has turned me off the game before I ever looked at getting it.

I remember when HL2 - Episode 1 came out and Newell said it would be a brave new way to release a game by splitting it up into smaller parts - helping their production cycle and bringing out content faster and easier.

I think its blatantly obvious now why its such an awful idea - Companies change their minds a lot. On Everything. And compartmentalized content can be given up if a company gets bored or changes its focus.

With a 1 stop 1 game product, at least you get an ending (semi) guaranteed.

We'll be lucky if we ever see the ending to Half Life 2.

Perhaps its Half life 3 who says they need to make a third episode

The surprise is that it's actually still Portal 2.

I am beginning to think we will never see thi final episode in the series...

I'll just say the obvious: Fuck you, Gabe!
(disregard if the big thing at E3 turns out to be a sequel to EP2 in some way)

That's a relief!

FFFUUUU-... well, actually we could get some other awesome Valve game (all Valve games are awesome)... but still. FFFFUUUU-

Jack and Calumon:

Calumon: We can hope...

That's what I was thinking myself. I figure that Episode 3 is just going to turn into a full sequel altogether.

It's either that...or a Half-Life movie?

Valve: "Like we said on the 7th of June it not Half-Life 2: Episode 3, it's Half-Life 3"
If valve said that i'm pritty sure they would be riot

OT:That's a shame, i hope whatever they have in store is good.

I seriously doubt we'll ever see Episode 3, because it's been so long since Episode 2 they might as well scrap the whole thing and pick up the story where they left off by starting work on Half-Life 3 itself. Maybe that's the surprise?

Wait, maybe I misunderstood. All Gabe Newell said was that the image was fake, not that the surprise isn't Episode 3? I don't really mind if they keep stalling it, but I just don't see how people came to the conclusion that it most definitely isn't Ep3.
