Chinese Students Build 32 Foot-Tall Transformer Statue

Art students in China have taken an old truck and recycled it into something truly extraordinary: a life-sized sculpture of a giant robot warrior.

We're used to knock-offs of popular things coming out of China; most of the time, such things are pieces of junk that fall apart pretty quickly. However, some students at the China Central Academy of Fine Arts have created a copy that is better than the original: They built a 32 foot-tall statue of a Transformer as their final graduation project.

The statue was originally an old junkyard truck that was stripped down and rebuilt into what is pictured at right. As a result, the statue itself is actually built almost entirely from the truck's parts, and weighs over four tons. The only parts of the piece that aren't recycled from the vehicle are its head and weapon. The project also cost only $4,470 to build.

The statue is actually created in the image of Chinese deity Guan Gong (also known as Guan Yu). Guan Gong was a general that lived during the second century and was a major player in the downfall of the last Han Emperor. He was later deified and is still worshipped by people in China.

To say that this statue is awesome is an understatement. I personally think more schools around the globe should encourage their students to build Transformer statues that pay homage to national heroes.

I don't think we have to do transformer statues.
I'm sure we could do other things to give appreciation to things.

If you give a nerd a cookie, he will eat it.

If you give a nerd too much free time, you get some truly awesome shit.

It's obvious that China is now firmly in cahoots with Japan and they are both amassing a Mecha Army of to take over the rest of the World.

I propose an alliance with the UK so we can begin our own creation of Battletech and MechWarrior Mechs to combat this latest act of Asian Mech Agression!!! Edit: May our realistic and practical mech designs lead us to VICTORY!

Picked the perfect hero for a transformers remake.

Shu for life!

However, do I see no beard? BLASPHEMY!

John Funk should be arriveing in 3...2...

That is easily the coolest thing I will see all week. I'm shocked John Funk didn't find it first.

Thats pretty epic! Makes me think like a Poor-man made Gundam from Japan! Epic work though and something to be proud of!

There's nothing to describe this other than awesome.

For the Alliance of Western Mecha (AMW)!

Anyway, pretty cool. Next, they need to make one out of an old fire truck and make Optimism Prime.

Not bad, but it's not as awesome as if it lived up to it's name and could actually transform.

That's a really cool statue - best use of old auto parts I've seen in a long time, heh.

So.. will Guan Yu be a giant robot in the next Dynasty Warriors?

A robot of the U.S.'s national heroes?

Hm...

Wow. Just wow. Gotta give those guys some credit, thats awesome.

Alright, who goes to college in the US midwest? We're building a George Washington transformer out of an SUV.

Now we need a school in the U.S. to create a statue of Megas.

Only then, shall the arms race for giant robotic weapons begin.

Very nice. Now, slap some paint on that boy!

Of course we can do any number of things. Is any of them as awesome as this one? Nope.

Sometimes you don't need a reason, the fact that it's awesome is moooore than enough.

Yes we need more insane graduation projects like these. I love it and it's a marvel to behold!

They already have a statue of Optimus Prime.

I wonder do people worship him too

I would, damn the fact England has quite literally nothing awesome(awesome in this case meaning massive+cool). I mean, even our olympic london tower things looks abit silly, and isn't even as big as the eiffel tower I mean if you're going to build something worse, at least build it bigger.

If these guys can make something this awesome with less than ten grand, how can Michael Bay not make anything acceptable with hundreds of millions of dollars?

If I could, I would kiss you.

Damn it! The US is falling behind in the giant robot arms race... We need to make some Mech Warroirs statues... Or Megus XLR

I declare Autobot Teddy Roosevelt to be THE WINNER!

...

Ned kelly made out of a ute...

I Think I Know what I Want to do for my major art project next year...

(Is Serious)

That boy's going to go places in life.

So is it an Autobot or a Deceptacon?

Wow... that thing is scary. Next step up is to create a life size transformer statue that moves! (OH MY GOD... ITS GODZILLA!!!!)

That is a pretty damn impressive feat, I must say!

By the way, wasn't Guan Yu the name of the god who chopped the heads off of people in My Name Is Bruce? Awesome!

I propose that the American people hereby convert an old warship into George Washington and a steam train into Abraham Lincoln. It'd be a better monument than what Washington's got, I'll tell you that.

In all seriousness, great job, guys. *applauds* That is beautiful.

Screw that! Im going to Japan and im gonna sign in on thier Robot/mecha pilot training.

That's pretty damn cool. All we've got in England are some concrete cows outside Milton Keynes and a giant circus tent on a disused gas-works in London - and they both cost a damn sight more than four and a half grand.

Bravo, chaps.

yes im all for teddy as a transformer! XD

Making it their school mascot wasn't good enough? Also, I would've just gotten a tattoo instead. It's less work.
