WoW: Cataclysm Closed Beta Starts Right This Instant

image

Good news, WoW junkies - you're about to get a whole lot of Cataclysm information very, very soon.

It may be a bit later than originally anticipated, but the closed beta test for Cataclysm, the third expansion to mega-MMOG World of Warcraft, is officially under way. According to Blizzard, invitations to the beta are now going out to "a wide range of players from around the world who signed up" via the opt-in.

"Our focus with Cataclysm has been to build on the knowledge we've gained through the previous expansions to deliver the best, most compelling World of Warcraft content for our players to date," said Blizzard CEO and cofounder Mike Morhaime. "Gathering focused feedback during the beta test will go a long way in helping us reach that goal when we launch Cataclysm later this year."

Oh, by the way, this means that any and all NDAs are officially up. So you'll probably be seeing lots of Cataclysm information in the next few days - especially here.

While I'm not going to go out and explicitly state we'll be doing something like our Travelers' Guide to Northrend, I'm also not going to say that we're not going to be doing something like that ...

... I guess you'll just have to come back and find out, won't you? The Mage They Call Jayne(z) will ride again! On a flying mount! In old-world Azeroth!

...Well then, this is going to be fun.

Idea for a name for the Cataclysm version of TGtN: "After The End of the World (of Warcraft)". Too long?

Hopefully my brother or I will get into this, because it looks fun.
After all, it is my duty to save the World. of Warcraft

I'm waiting for the klaxon to herald the start of Starcraft 2 Part 1 Beta Phase 2 myself, but it's good to know that World of Warcraft Part 4 Beta Phase 1 is underway.

That's all I needed to contribute to this thread.
....what do you mean low content posts are frowned upon...? Oh alright fine...

It's the end of the world (of Warcraft) as we know it... and I feel fiiine...!

I hope I get in, being in the Wrath beta was quite fun, but this should be much more interesting.

This Expansion is also aimed to bring new players in and gain back their previous audience. Either way, if it becomes F2P and the Expansion fixes many things, I am going back, no doubt!

Does it matter if you have an active account or not? Mines been frozen for the past... 3 months?

Just a heads up to everyone, don't use this news as a reason to dive head first into any e-mail you get stating it's a Beta invite.

Be wary guys, I have recieved no less that 3 scam emails since this news became public.
Be sure to check those addresses.

But besides that, I am excited, and hope I recieve a (genuine) invite.

Actually i have the beta invite, but i don't have WoW

That's impossible. I'm pretty sure the requirements are to have a World of Warcraft account.

Sorry, but I'm currently trying really hard to fight off the urge to stab you through my computer screen.
/cries in the corner

Maybe now someone will finally be able to explain the good parts about this expansion to me. So far it's just been "durrr flying mounts in azeroth, yeahhhhhhhh", which is a negative.

Thumbs crossed for more educated arguments from now on!

I still miss Arthas ; ;.

Uh, the fact that they're going back to the old world to make the 1-60 questing content as good as their 70-80 questing content with all the stuff they've learned, like phasing et al? That they're going back and making the leveling process much better so the quests don't suck as much? (I don't know if you've gone back and done the old-world quests but after TBC and WotLK leveling a new character or getting your achievements is downright painful).

That they're actually putting effort into making Azeroth a dynamic world and not a place where nothing ever changes?

I mean, this is just stuff on the surface. But frankly, the idea of it alone sounds fantastic, and is a marked change from "LOL NEW PLACE HERE'S TEN MORE LEVELS."

come on beta key

*keeps checking email*

EDIT: either way, i deleted the inv, i don't plan on playing a decent MMO until SWTOR *Star Wars The Old Republic*

I will try to describe World of Warcraft's doctrines in such a way that my language will not offend and yet will still convey my message that World of Warcraft's gormless, twisted false-flag operations were forged in the crucible of commercialism. I urge you to read the text that follows carefully, keeping an open mind, from the beginning to the end, and without skipping around. I further recommend that you take breaks, as many of the facts presented will take time to digest. Despite total incompetence, World of Warcraft is often afflicted with an amazing conceit that causes it to mold the mind of virtually every citizen-young or old, rich or poor, simple or sophisticated.

World of Warcraft is not the only one who needs to reassess its assumptions. Think about egocentric swaggerers. They too should realize that World of Warcraft dreams of a time when they'll be free to rot our minds with the hallucinatory drug of mysticism. That's the way it's planned it, and that's the way it'll happen-not may happen but will happen-if we don't interfere, if we don't establish a supportive-rather than an intimidating-atmosphere for offering public comment. World of Warcraft has long wanted to prevent anyone from stating publicly that its language consists largely of euphemism, question-begging, and sheer, cloudy vagueness. Why do I bring that up? Because by studying its repression of ideas in its extreme, unambiguous form one may more clearly understand why throughout history, there has been a clash between those who wish to improve the lot of humankind and those who wish to remake the world to suit its own incoherent needs. Naturally, World of Warcraft belongs to the latter category.

I hope that humanity will rid this earth of crabby slobs with the greatest dispatch, since otherwise, the earth might well become rid of humanity. There are arguments that have made respectable organizations out of calumniators like World of Warcraft. So don't feed me any phony baloney about how unsavory couch potatoes are more deserving of honor than our nation's war heroes. That's just not true. Now for some parting advice: Look at the facts. Analyze the arguments. Think about the motives of the people who are telling you that World of Warcraft's an expert on everything from aardvarks to zymurgy. And have confidence in yourself. Remember, World of Warcraft's casus belli offer us nothing more than the same old snake oil in a shinier bottle.

Ohhh, that makes sense.

Please do not post every little bit of information about the expansion here, sure big ticket items, but not crap like "X class skill gets Y buff" or whatever, there are WoW fansites for that crap.

<---- WoW clean for 18 months and counting.

is this why sc2 beta phase 2 keeps getting pushed back? One game at a time blizzard! Work on your better game, aka starcraft.

Thanks to this, I just checked my Beta page for the first time in months. And found out I got into the Starcraft 2 Beta.

John Funk, I owe you my life. Even if SC2 does come out in a month.

EDIT: And only after installing it do I find out I can't play it.

Oh well, I'll be able to play it when the second phase starts.

Blizzard has five completely independent teams.

WoW
SC2
D3
New MMOG
Other Project

The SC2 team has had literally nothing to do with Cataclysm :P

Well I didn't get an invite yet..but I'd much rather a TOR beta invite.

YAY... now that the people stuck in Azeroth are busy, WHERE'S MY DIABLO III INFO?!?!?

Worgen and Goblin starting experience are hands down the best in the game. Who knew Sylvanis could be so evil? Whoops, don't want to give too much away.

Come ooon beta key, this is one I wanna get in for!

Take a breath man! that was a mouth full...

OT: Eh, I just quit wow and probably for good now. I saw Catacalysm and I really didn't care for it... besides I will be to hung up on Crackdown 2 for the rest of the year (I easily get addicted)

I'm pretty sure if that's the case, then it's a phishing mail.

Don't forget about a small team that still sometimes updates Diablo 2, Warcraft 3 and Starcraft.

This means nothing more to me than yet another lame video from Hobbs.

Sorry, not such a huge fan of a guy talking incoherent nonsense into the mic about how his game is going, although you can plainly see in the video how it is constantly updated as he is AOEing the living shit out of random mobs.

... Other than that, I hope some of you reporters have a beta so you can report from the front lines. I'D BE VERY HAPPY! :D

Aaaand no-one said they were. What are you getting at here?

I might make a new toon and do my best to level it up when this launches.

But somehow I don't find myself looking forward to the endgame anymore. I have to say that only two things even remotely interest me about Cataclysm so far. Using my main's flying mount to go on an exploration trip across the new Azeroth and maybe levelling up one new toon to see how they've implemented the new phasing and questing philosophies.

Overall a single 2 month card upon launch can cover that wish just fine. But as far as endgame is concerned...meh...I've had my fill of PVE and PVP as defined by WoW I think. And nothing I've seen thus far with the endgame is anything that isn't an extension of what was done in WotLK (during which I lost my will for the endgame). Only the RP could suck me back in, but frankly SWTOR has more of a basis for that to happen than Blizzard's universes I think so...

Ah well...I guess it *does* at least have enough interest to at least make me consider paying for a single 2 month card. Damn you to hell Blizzard. :p
