Bioware Has a Plan for The Old Republic End-Game

image

BioWare says it has a "plan" for the late-game stages of Star Wars: The Old Republic and the truly hardcore players who want to do more once they've done it all.

It's a wall that every serious MMOG player has hit: The level cap. You've maxed out your fighter, you've maxed out your mage, you've maxed out your thief, and as you ponder the viability of a half-kobold paladin, you realize that you've reached the plateau that represents every game developer's worst nightmare: You're bored.

But there's no need to worry about that in The Old Republic, according to BioWare's James Ohlen, because the famed RPG studio has a plan to do things a little differently. "Don't worry, it's not like we're ignoring [the end game]. We have a lot of hardcore MMO players who have like five level 80 WoW characters, so it's not like we don't have the knowledge of what we need to do in terms of the elder game and other aspects of our game," he told IncGamers.

"I know some people are worried, for example, about the elder game [and are asking] 'What happens in the elder game, what happens when you get to the highest level?'" he said. "We do have a plan for that and we will be revealing it the future."

I don't care a lick about Star Wars or MMOGs but if I did, you better believe that I'd be mighty excited about this. As it is, I'm looking forward to BioWare's solution to the MMOG end-game dilemma strictly from an academic perspective: How do you end a game that never really ends?

This could be interesting.

I really can't think of anything much else to say, other than that.

Maybe their solution is to kill your avatar after you finished a specific end-game quest? They did it with Mass Effect.

Just kidding of course, I hope Bioware can set a new standard for this!

If anyone can do it, BioWare can.

Well seeing as though they have the Mythic team helping them now i wouldn't be shocked to see some kind of Tome of Knowledge included, that should keep some explorers and achievement hunters busy.

I don't normally care much for mmos, but this game has got me pretty excited.

Well, from my experience, so far the best way to not get people leave the MMO from boredom was adding new, polished, and challenging content regularly. It kept me going in WoW for quite long time till around WotlK when things slowed down so much, and whole game was getting tailored more towards the casual, unorganized crowd instead guilds that looked for challenge, that i eventually got tired of it.

If BioWare will manage to somehow resolve it in better way, great, if not, there is always that path. (two most praised end-game instances in WoW were vanilla Naxx and BCs Sunwell, they were hard, and only few guilds managed to clear it, but they kept them going, WotlKs ICC from what i hear is rather disappointing.)

I have alot of faith that they can pull this off, and I hope they do because this is the first MMORPG that I'm actually considering buying.

Last MMORPG I played was WoW, I hope Bioware can make it "not stale". Then again, light sabres are said to work wonders.

Seriously, Bioware, Where have you been all my life! KotOR, Dragon Age, TOR...
I'm loving it

Sounds interesting. I'm still on the fence about this game though. I just don't play MMOs, but I love Bioware games.

So torn!

I am guessing and hoping that when players hit the level cap new areas of the story will open up and we can continue questing and advancing the story of The Old Republic. I hope there is a plot point in TOR that allows us to search for what Revan was searching for.

That would be so awesome, I'd fall in love with ToR if this happened. Okay the rage and frustration of a billion players quitting wouldn't be worth it for Bioware but still...

i can't see them not doing that..it'd send every revan fan through the roof with orgasms if that was in the game, no matter what it is its only a financial boost for them and it'll defintly make the game look good.

Well, I suppose they are covering all there bases at least then. Should give plenty of people stuff to do when they reach that part

I don't quite think they can get around the fact that games are not infinite, it'll still end. Besides, isn't having five max-level characters enough, crimy I got bored with WoW at about level 50 on my first character. I really doubt that anyone will be able to play the game past the year of two it takes to get five or six maxed out characters.

Too bad this is an MMO. I don't play MMO's, EVER! I'll just sit in my corner and wait for KotOR 3 I guess.

THIS ^

Bioware has banked enough trust over the years that I treat them "innocent until proven guilty" instead of "guilty until proven innocent" which is how I treat most games.

It's not coming, they are releasing a KotOR MMO, why would they make a 3?

Orly.

Is the plan for end game to announce a release date??

Its been 4 years, and we have 2 CGI's and some concept art. (And alot of "yay sith" to wade through.)

Wait, so they would just keep developing content as people play, so that someone playing at a reasonable rate always has new content? (By which I mean like, once a month, something significant comes out, not like, streaming content of course, lol)

That would take so much work to do it would be unbelievable, but if they kept a dedicated development team on it all the time it could work, that would blow WoW out of the water.

Early 2011 is close enough for me, do you need a set day?

I reckon once you hit the level cap your character gets deleted, and you have to start again

Every day this game seems to sound better and better...

Id like one, but Ill settle for making snide remarks.

On an afternote, if anyone is planning to take my heathenistic, un-charitable comment about TOR and using it to flame me, for daring to make demands of the company that is single handedly going to SAVE OUR WORLD with their upcoming MMO, please dont bother. I am looking forward to playing TOR just as much as everyone else over the age of five, but after following with rabid intensity for this many years, my enthusiasm is sapped. Danpascooch, and indeed, everyone else, is entitled to their opinions/enthusiasm... and so am I. Im sure it will come back when I have a shiny box in my hand.

(Assuming I havent succumbed to arthritis/senility by that time... ;-) )

If you get sent on a mission to find either:

The Yuuzhan Vong

OR

Revan

Then I fucking called it.

Nah, sounds like a good idea in principle though. Giving a player some sort of ultimate goal that they can only achieve once they've reached that highest level is a really good idea IMO. It gives people a reason to get to the highest level, first and foremost, and it also provides the really hardcore players with the bragging rights of 'I did the final ultra-hard quest of TOR and all I got was this lousy Robe'.

They have said at E3 that The Old Republic is looking at a Spring 2011 Launch. Heck, Half-Life 2: Episode 3 has been in development for about 3 years and there was nothing about it shown at E3, least TOR has a projected launch date. Hopefully, HL2: Episode 3 comes out next year too.

Have they revealed if there is going to be a subscription fee yet?

Ow.... My nerd boner just hit me in the face.

This game was already dead to me when they said they "balanced" Jedi. Jedi don't balance; Jedi are demigods!

I understood what you meant. In my opinion I think it might be something like adding new story quests every month or two but break it down into parts so that it keeps the player wanting more and when they do finish that story quest more plot lines open up from there.

How do you end a game that never really ends?

The Kingdom of Loathing is a classic example of constantly changing content with near infinite replayability. There's no level cap because the ultimate baddies level up with you. When your game "ends", you reincarnate and start all over again as a newbie with new ways to play and new limits you can impose for additional goodies.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Bioware take a page from that and recycle players through the story with new characters and new tweaks along the way. I wonder how the concept of reincarnation would play in a universe soaked in Force.

If it was free to play I would join, otherwise I will also sit in a corner and wait for KOTOR 3. I belive I have already made my choice on which group I will serve.
Peace is a lie; there is only passion.
Through passion, I gain strength.
Through strength, I gain power.
Through power, I gain victory.
Through victory, my chains are broken.
The Force shall free me.

I agree, Stop trying to impress people by shouting how awesome this game will be Bioware and show us some proof.

4 years? So now rumors and prepping the terrain count as 'official announcements' all of a sudden, eh?
