Dragon Age: Origins Reigns Supreme as Best-Selling BioWare Game.

Never mind space battles, lightsabers and robots; apparently what gamers really want in their BioWare games is blood splatter and dogs.

BioWare's reputation as a maker of excellent RPGs is well deserved, having created classics like the Baldur's Gate series and Knights of the Old Republic. But despite this long pedigree, it seems that BioWare's most commercially successful game is in fact last year's Dragon Age: Origins, a game it expected to have little mainstream appeal.

"Dragon Age was an extremely successful title for us - last November it was the single most globally successful title we've put out to date," said Rob Bartel, BioWare's principal designer. "This is one of our two primary IPs in the Edmonton studio in Canada, and then we're working on the Old Republic down in Austin. So Dragon Age is a very big part of what we do and for what the future for BioWare will hold for sure."

There are no doubt plenty of reasons you could think up for why Dragon Age has done so well, but a big part of it must surely be the fact that it's the first BioWare game in nearly ten years that has been available to PlayStation owners. Mass Effect, Knights of the Old Republic and Jade Empire were all initially released on the Xbox or Xbox 360, with PC versions coming later. Dragon Age: Origins, on the other hand, was designed to be multi-platform from day one. Considering the PS3 represents an audience of tens of millions that was previously untapped, Dragon Age's success makes a lot of sense.

Cool. Seeing as my Steam account is disabled, and I'm bored of my Xbox 360, DA is pretty much the only game I'm playing. It's got its share of flaws, but it's a great game.

Wow, I was expecting the ME series to be Bioware's top seller but still, DAO is a great game.

Doesn't surprise me, though I was sure ME2 would take the title.

It'll be because it's multiplatform. I'm sure ME2 would top it if it was on PS3 as well ;D

"last November it was the single most globally successful title we've put out to date,""

Does that mean ME2 could still possibly be their best sold? Or has he just worded that a bit funny and I'm looking too much into it?

That's surprising, but does make sense. I'm glad to hear it though, since DA is my favorite BioWare franchise with the possible exception of KOTOR.

That's odd. I didn't expect that at all. In fact, I expected Mass Effect, like others in this thread seem to have done as well.

So that's why it ain't ME2! Huh...whelp, sure good to see it worked out well for the PS3 crowd too.

It is worded a little funny but I don't think that if it was ultimately proven false they would tout it as such.

Make it multi-platform, and they will come.

Dragon Age: Origins was awesome. In every way, except the graphics.

Dragon Age 2, bring it, Bioware, bring it. I want this game, especially the new visual style I heard about.

Unsuprising news, but well deserved all the same. DA:O one of the best RPG's ever!!

That is very surprising...considering that Bioware made Baulders Gate...AKA the greatest RPG ever made...

YAY!
This officially makes the game better than Mass Effect!

BOW DOWN TO THE SUPERIOR RPG!

Yeah, same here. I even said as much earlier today. :D

Oh well!

Dragon age is good, but I much prefer Mass Effect 2 over it. I started a game twice but drgaon age just doesn't seem to hold my attention. Which is wierd cuz dragons and swords and that kind of stuff is my thing.

Wow, even when Bioware says going in that not a lot of people are going to like a game, gamers just seem to take it as a challenge.

I very much enjoyed Origins, and I am looking forward to part 2.

Austen is spelt Austin, assuming you were talking about Austin, Texas.

OT: I am sure that Being multi-platform had a reason for it selling so well. But good for them making money to make more good games. I just hope that DA:2 will play better on console than the first one.

Why does the Escapist and folks here love Dragon Age so much? Does the great sell lie behind marketing's push on the "open ended gameplay" "epic" "good vs evil" "you are the savior" "you get to kill lots of enemies" "lots of customization" "romantic choices" campaign? Like Fallout 3?

DA has been out longer then ME2.

I can believe it...Epic game, story, characters, and gameplay...and music to boot too.

I do love the Dragon Age games

that makes two of us. i thought it was alright, I didn't think it was all that. ME2 I think is more deserving.

As others have said, it probably beat ME or ME2 because its also on the PS3. I think its also because its a better game, but I know I'm probably in a minority on that.

Of course it reign supreme
since you decided to give ps3 some of the cream
But that just mean the game isn't bo-ring
and that could be, it now the new king!

Joking asided, Their new DLC leliana song kicks ASS.

Why are people surprised? It was a heavily marketed multiplatform title, a first for the PS3 from the developer in fact.

If Mass Effect 2 was on the PS3, that would be the best selling Bioware game.

All the success to this great developer.

I guess it's because of the lack of western RPGs in the past couple years.

Something decent comes along in rpg land and all the starved fans of the genre go out and buy it.
We had some RPshooters and TPLs, but full party control is a lost feature.

i bet ME2 would be #1 if it was on the PS3

Is this really that surprising?

Logan Westbrook:
Dragon Age: Origins, on the other hand, was designed to be multi-platform from day one.

It was designed to be PC-only from day one. EA mandated that it be ported to the other platforms when they bought BioWare (admittedly this is just a hunch on my part), and the console ports were contracted out to Edge of Reality while the PC release was delayed so it would be simultaneous on all platforms.

I'm sure the availability on consoles certainly made it sell much better than if it were PC-only, but I suspect the biggest contributing factor was EA's marketing budget.

That's cool considering the audience it was intended for.I was recently playing Dage and my hdd bricked on me after only owning it for 5 days i had 40 hours clocked in, but i gotta say the mass effects games have been the best part of my summer so far they have such great writers over there at bio ware that is always what makes me connect to there worlds.

One more thing for a game they didn't expect to be that successful they sure did market the hell out of it must be nice to be able to reach into to EA's pockets.

Oh you have GOT to be fucking kidding me!

This was my least favorite Bioware game (that means it's still in my top twenty games of all time though...)

If any game deserves that title, it's Mass Effect.

Well, it's Jade Empire, but that's obviously not going to happen.

I bet the game of the year edition would have to be at least 3 discs long from all the extra DLC they've released for it.

Hm... for a game basically made for the "hardcore" crowd, its interesting that the mainstream loves it so much.

Maybe thats because the mainstream isn't as stupid as everyone says.

Stop reporting news about Dragon Age! It's at the top of my wishlist but I can't have it yet...
