Maxis Revealing Something Spore Related at Comic Con

Is Maxis working on a game with the most customizable hero in history?

Maxis, creator of Sim City and The Sims, will reveal its new game at San Diego Comic Con later this month. The game is described as a "Sci-Fi Action-RPG based on the DNA of Spore" and will be unveiled by key leads from the design team in an hour long session on July 24th.

Exactly what is meant by "the DNA of Spore" isn't clear. It might mean that the game is a spin-off title like Spore Hero for the Wii, or it might mean that the game uses some of Spore's systems, like the creature creator.

There's a lot of very cool games that could come from this, from a Zelda-style game where the treasures are wings and feet rather than bows and boomerangs, to a game where you can walk into Mos Eisley-esque cantina as a species you designed yourself. Whatever the connection is though, we're going to have to wait a couple of weeks to find out.

It's not called DarkSpore by any chance? I read that EA might be making something called that in OPM

So it will look cool during development and then be utterly disappointing, repetitive and with a less than minimum of gameplay?

ORLY? I already thought that everything Spore-related was written off as a failure, or at least wasn't of particular intrest to EA.

I also wonder if it's going to be bad, acceptable, or even *GASP!* enjoyable.

IN THE GRIM DARKNESS OF THE FAR FUTURE THERE IS ONLY SPORE!!!

Sorry for that, but word "Dark" in the name or title rarely means anything good.

As one of the 6 or so people who actually enjoyed Spore, I find this exciting.

Me too!

I'll be keeping an eye on this =]

Will it be an expansion pack that gives us what was actually promised by will wright during all those press conferences?

i enjoyed spore immensly.... for the first playthrough, then it got boring. yes i understand that the space portion is a sandbox and therefore has no end but it got boring really fast. my favorite part was the creature stage. THIS game did not even come anywhere near the hype it had, plus i was pissed they removed the underwater creature stage!

why cant we just go back to simcity? like the good old days?

You know, this was the first thing I thought.

Spore had so little...substance, when you go down to it.

Well that actually sounds very exciting. I've been disappointed by Spore too but you've got to give Maxis credit for at least trying original stuff. If they apply what they learned with Spore it could actually turn out good. I'm imagining a RPG where you build a world and populate it with creatures you've built too... and then destroy it all! It's what everyone's been doing with SimCity and The Sims anyway.

I could've sworn Spore was a major flop..

My interpretation of the "DNA of Spore," is that they're taking the gameplay elements and improving on them or refining them...not necessarily making a Spore 2.

I'm hoping this is going to be good, I'm still waiting for a decent game where I can play as a kick-ass ninja lobster! :-)

Is it going to be another game that misrepresents evolution? I suuuuure hope so!

OOOH! While they are at it they can add DRM again!

Unless it turns out they plan to go back in time and retroactively make Spore not abysmal, I can't say I care that much. Fuck off and die, Maxis. I will never, ever buy anything Spore-related again.

It might work, but what they need to do is make something a little less childish, that's what was holding spore back in my opinion. I mean even something on the same maturity level as the sims would be better, because no matter how awesome a creature I made on spore, the game still managed to make them look ridiculous with the silly character animations and voice effects.

I loved it, I need to find my CD's.

make that 6 ,7 ,because i like spore, i just hope if this is good its not some wii game

That'll be cool. Loved the series of Spore! And, something else in the vein of that creativ enterprise will make me smile

It's Maxis. It won't be a good game.
Methinks.?

Can't you just redo Spore, with less whiny neighbors? No?
Oh well, I guess new and exciting works too. "DNA" of Spore, huh? Sounds groovy.

Id prefer an expansion to spore =(

Sci-fi action RPG? From Maxis?
Err... I feel as though I should politely ask them to get out of my genre.

Ugh... I just want the good version of Spore they showed during development - the one that didn't water down the creature creation to a crappy numbers system.

I liked Spore, but it was still a big disappointment to me as it delivered far less than was shown by Will Wright. They seemed to boil away the emergant properties stuff in place of generic numbers.

I look forward to this. I loved spore editor. I made about 400 things on it. Though the gameplay was lacking. I spent most of my time in the editor/creator mode.

There was one... Galactic adventures. Or were you saying you'd like another expansion, in that case, me too!

If they introduce the same idiotic DRM like Spore, you don't need an analyist to tell you what will be pirated the most.

No No. Nononononooooooo.

I'm not reading up on any of this after the utterly fucking colossal disappointment that was Spore.

I believe they will muck it up like they did with Spore.

i hope it wont be a fucking wii exclusive

Walking into a Mos Eisley Cantina as a species you design yourself would totally rock. I hope Lucasarts gets on that one some time soon. And I waould want to be a gunslinging bounty hunter, not a Jedi.

I count my self in as one of those people!

I enjoyed parts of spore. Mainly, the Creature Creator. I found that to be the most fun out of the entire game. The rest of it was a watered down version of five other games that did it better.

The only way that Maxis can make this right is if they start rethinking what real content is. The player needs to be engaged in something evolving, not with static elements like the rest of Wright's games have been. Sim Societies was an abysmal ride through City Planning using static elements that limited the player based on the amount of "creativity" or "spirituality" their town had. Sims 3 suffers even worse from this, having a system where all the personalities are fundamentally the same without room for cultural intuition or characterization (Polygamy is impossible. The AI is horrendous, ect.) and Spore suffers from the unfortunate effect of having it's entire situation be one big joke. The game play is the same no matter what path you take. It could have been so much better.

So if they're taking the framework of Spore and remaking Spore into what it should be, good. I'll probably see if my consumerzombie buddy of mine will buy it and I'll play it. But if it's just making use of Spore's mechanics to create some sort of Action RPG, then it's destined to fail. It's gameplay mechanics aren't meant for that sort of game, and working from the framework will cause a lot of issues.

yeah, galactic adventures was fun, but i feel some missed opportunities in improving the stages up to space. so yeah, new expansion!
