Microsoft Deep Sixes 1 vs 100

image

Confirming rumors, Microsoft has revealed that it's canceling the popular XBLA trivia game 1 vs 100.

Bad news for trivia buffs: 1 vs 100 isn't coming back for another season to Xbox Live. The news wasn't exactly surprising, since rumors started circulating around the Web earlier this week, but it's still sad to hear.

The development team also revealed the news, via its official blog:

We're sorry to have kept you waiting in suspense before having to deliver this kind of news. We fully understand how some of you may be upset about the announcement. We hope you understand that it wasn't an easy decision to make and there was a great deal of deliberation.

Our team really enjoyed making 1 vs. 100. Working on it was unlike anything we'd worked on before. Seeing the passionate feedback and interaction from our players was always appreciated. Even though we spent our days at work bringing the game to you, we still enjoyed playing alongside you. Our colleagues on the writing team made us laugh, too.

We knew starting on this project, that 1 vs. 100 was completely different and would be an idea we would continue to evolve. We've learned a lot from this experience and we're committed to applying these lessons to the cool, new stuff we're working on, but can't yet discuss.

For Dave McCarthy, general manager of Microsoft Game Studios, this is a bittersweet moment. "When we started on this journey, we knew we were creating an entirely new genre of entertainment that would be a continually evolving concept," he told Kotaku. "We're very proud of the 1 vs. 100 team and their accomplishments, and are excited to apply what we've learned to future programming."

According to McCarthy, the game's development team is now, "focusing their skills and applying the technology used to develop 1 vs. 100 to new projects that will be unveiled in the future."

I only played 1 vs 100 a few times, but I enjoyed the game quite a bit whenever I had the chance. I'm a little sad to see it go away, but hopefully the development team will be able to deliver something just as fun with its next project.

Damn! I never got a chance to play it , but m friends who did gave glowing impressions.

I am upset :(

Wait, it's going away? They're taking off Xboxlive? How the fuck does that work?

That game was terrible! Everyone would get to the 800 MSP reward and then stop.

I absolutely loved 1 vs 100 (and even got into the Mob and won a prize) so I'm very sorry to see this go.

I'm very sad about this. Where will i go to get my trivia knowledge running free again?

now i have 0 reasons to even have an account to connect to the internet with 360 now. I liked that 1 vs 100. me my dad and my little brother were playing it lol.

LUCKY!

I never won anything, but I enjoyed it nonetheless

Shame, I loved playing it. Used to jump on every Tuesday and Friday to play with some friends I only really saw during the game. Now I'll never speak to them again, thanks Microsoft...

I really loved this show...I wish it didnt have to go...this is a true loss!

Another example of why having a single company in charge of all online traffic is a terrible thing.

I was just going to comment that you were going to be a sad panda. I never got to play it, and that article you wrote about it is all I really ever read about it, and it made me want to play it. Now I will never get the chance. /sadface

Dammit! I was going to play this when the new season was supposed to come out!

Dammit!

I played it when it was free (is it free by default? I dunno) and it was an interesting diversion, nothing more.

I was just wondering about what happened to this yesterday.

Was it boring? Yes but it was fun at TIMES.

I do not think that they gave it much of a chance.

don't care.

take down castle crashers and i'll have an opinion.

While this is unfortunate, at least now I have a new piece of ammunition against my coworkers who are constantly badgering me to get an Xbox 360. I think I would have enjoyed this game immensely; now that it's gone, it's one huge reason to purchase the system that's now gone too.

NOOOOOoooo

I am seriously upset by this... I love 1 vs 100. Played it so much (even though I never won anything)

Now I'm mad.

It looks like 1 vs 100's days...

*sunglasses*

...are numbered.

That's freaking hilarious... They didn't even really state their reason for taking it off. Did they receive complaints? Did people cheat? Was no-one playing or it just not selling well?

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!! How else will I be smug for coming 4th in a Europe-wide round?! Grrrr!! Think I missed the last time it was on, but I really enjoyed the first season/beta runs!!

That's a shame, I really enjoyed 1 vs 100. Never got picked for anything, but it was still a blast none-the-less, especially with friends.

Well that's just horrible. I was waiting for the next season to start, now it'll never happen. Hey, now that I think of it, what happens to the achievements for that game? I had gotten quite a few.

Bah, that's disappointing. I had a spell in the mob once (not the 100, the rabble that played alongside) and it was good fun.

Hopefully, they will come up with something similar to replace, it would be a pity for a neat little idea like this be abandonded. Not all of us get to go on a live game show, so this is the closest some of us may get to that sort of thing....

It was a terrific event. Somehow I felt previous year was Xbox Live's greatest year. Something made me feel like that. 1 vs 100 certainly contributed to it.

That sucks, I loved that game! I used to skip out of work early every tuesday and friday to play.

Awwww, I was just wondering when the next season was going to be. That game was awesomely fun.

It was never released in my country anyway along with many other 'great' Microsoft features and content I keep hearing about. I was actually looking forward to Microsoft releasing this here in a decade or so...

I hated this game.

Mostly because I'm not old enough to win it's prizes.
Joking aside, it's sad to see it go.

If you don't mind my asking, how in the world did you even get selected to enter?

Goddamnit!!! I'm only one Achievement shy of a full set...and now I'll never get it!!! *sobs*

People are chosen from the crowd based on many factors, including their performance to date that week or that day. I'm pretty good at the game, and just plain got lucky and got picked to be in the mob one evening.

But I was actually good?! Heck, I bet you could do use Kinect with it...

To be honest, I would have at least kept the extended play up. It was fun to play with friends in the room and show off your knowledge. I hope they bring a trivia game back in some form (preferably free).

I reckon it was just getting too expensive if they were handing out prizes every week. What other reason could they possibly have for cancelling something that is (seemingly) so popular (I say 'seemingly' because I never actually got the chance to play it -- I could never get online at the right time, dammit!).
