Is It Real, Or Is It Red Dead Redemption?

Red Dead Redemption's world is in a new time-lapse film that makes it hard to discern what's real and what's not.

Aside from setting 2010 sales records and getting a slew of DLC, Red Dead Redemption is making even more waves. This time, the game's world is featured in an amazing time-lapse movie that is, for lack of a better word, stunning in its realism.

The movie was created by Digital Foundry (which has done other such videos based on games like Assassin's Creed II, Fallout 3, and Crackdown), and it certainly adds a lot of fuel to the fire that is the "videogames as art" debate. While Red Dead Redemption uses the same RAGE engine that Grand Theft Auto IV did, the sheer amount of detail in the natural environment is jaw-dropping. This, combined with an astounding draw distance, often makes it hard to tell this virtual world from the real one.

For Digital Foundry, creating this movie was exceptionally challenging. "Putting this video together required... patience," the group explained. "A full 24-hour cycle in-game amounts to an hour of real time, but you need to record more than that to ensure you get a full uninterrupted capture of the crucial dawn and sunset periods.

"As just one minute of HD capture footage usually weighs in at over 1GB, we opted to capture at just one frame per second, massively reducing the space requirement and requiring so little CPU that the workstation could be used for other things at the same time. 49 shots were taken in total, with 39 making their way into the final edit."

While the sequences with buildings and people in them are easier to discern as CG environments, the ones featuring only natural settings look like they could have come straight out of a nature documentary. While Digital Foundry did a great job of capturing this footage, the real credit should go to Rockstar San Diego for creating such a beautiful &mdash and thoroughly convincing &mdash world.

It looks really good, but clearly not photorealistic.

aww when i saw the title i thought it might have something to do with the pc release :/ if its ever being released for pc that is :\

WOW. I'm a bit shocked. One, that I never noticed all that, Two, that someone took the time to make this, and Three, that I actually recognized all the places.

I'd say even the scenes with people in it look somewhat realistic, since they move about their day and do stuff in a realistic matter.
But yeah, clearly not photorealistic, but still damn impressive. The environment is one of the reasons this game is one of my all time favorites.

I hope we get a PC version too. Not that I'd buy it, I already own it for the console, but I'd like to play it with certain friends that don't own a proper gaming console...

Also, beautiful shots, beautiful game. I love it.

Photo-realistic? Nope.

Pretty damn impressive? Yep.

Yeah that is pretty convincing, more then I thought it would be. Naturally when you get the buildings and the people in there it becomes easier to tell that it's CG, but even then it still looks pretty convincing.

Nah, even the nature ones are easy to discern without looking for photorealism, the small bushes are the same shape and size, a videogame staple.

That is pretty cool. I like it, although easy to spot at times, it blends nicely

Some environmental things really break down that realistic view but it's impressive nonetheless. RDR was an excellent game with graphics and setting to match.

Showed me dad and remarked if it wasn't the same cowboy game I played whilst he was watching and drooling at the visuals.

Actually, makes me want to play it again, tho' I will be recieving Transformers today, going to play it like mad!

Intense, like RDR

Hm, I found this more comparable for "IS IT REAL!?"
Crysis, what did you expect?

Meh. Yea it looks pretty great but I wouldn't have com close to thinking any of those shots were real, especially anything that had trees, bushes or grass in them. Water looked pretty damn good though I'll say.

Well, the building shots don't, but the rest are.

The ground and rocks don't look any better than Fallout 3, and the plants actually don't look that great.

Now that is pretty damn cool. Some of those take a really hard look to tell that it's not real.

Of this quote, I was not a believer.

Until I watched the video.

Now I believe! Wow, just wow. I never really appreciated the detail Rockstar put into this game to make it so realistic. Then again, it is said that the best effects are the ones you don't notice, that means they're doing their job.

Credit Rockstar with making quite the effort at excellent landscapes, without going the route of Crytek and making a game made for the next(or the one after that even) generation of system that someone else has. Especially considering the chipset the 360 carries is last generation.

The world of Red Dead Redemption looks amazing. There was so much detail put into the scenery.

Impressive. But not realistic.

the clouds ain't be moving right.

I don't think the creative geniuses at Digital Foundry (or Rockstar San Diege for that matter) intended for this sequence to be photo-realistic - just pretty and awesome.

I already decided I didn't want this game, Goddamnit. Stop making me rethink my decision. Some of those could have fooled me into thinking they were real.

. . . wow.

Dang, looks cool. Makes me want to try the game now...

Is the moon sitting still? Seems like a strange detail to neglect. Also, I noticed in one spot the sun was still reflecting off the water after it set behind the mountains.

I will continue to nitpick more about this game until they port it to the PC.

Sadly, they have yet to perfect cloud technology. Sure, they look all poofy and fluffy like real clouds, but normal clouds shift, change, break apart, and turn into new clouds as they blow through the sky. These stay almost exactly the same as they are.

Mind you, it still looks very nice.

I live in Arizona in the Sonoran desert, and I am continuously amazed at how much RDR looks like the scenery here. It's so spot-on, including the gorgeous sunrises and sunsets. Literally 95% of the sunsets I've seen here are spectacular. This just proves how brilliant their world design was in this game.

I actually used RDR as an example in a recent games as art thread. Especcially after trotting through Mexico overlooking the winding rapids of the river.

Oh my god. That Assassin's Creed 2 one is far more brilliant than this one, imo.

*drools*

Wow, that is really beautiful. I knew graphics were moving forward but soon we may have finally nailed down realism.

...now could we just do it without neglecting gameplay?

If you take the time, you can make almost anything well. Propers to them for making the effort, it paid off.

Soylent Bacon:

My thoughts exactly. It isn't perfect, but it is extremely impressive.

Far better than that other RDR film.

Yeah, Digital Foundry can always make a game look much better than it actually looks. Still, the environments and lighting in RDR were very pretty, while the weather effects bordered on flawless. Indoors of course everything looked much worse and often way too dark. I'd love to see the game on a bleeding edge PC though, I think it would look really stunning.

The place is something else alright. haven't been in an open world game that felt open in a while. Game is my GOTY for sure
