Square Enix Adapting Tactics Ogre for PSP

image

Square Enix is remaking the popular strategy title Tactics Ogre for the PSP while keeping the original gameplay and adding some extra content.

Tactics Ogre never saw an SNES release here in North America, though we did eventually see a PlayStation version arrive on our shores about three years after the original game was published in Japan. Square Enix seems to think the original game is worthy of a re-release, and the publisher has announced that it's remaking the original SNES version for the PSP.

Famitsu Magazine, which broke the news, has learned that the upcoming game's title is Tactics Ogre: Wheel of Fate. Not only will it keep the look of the original SNES title, but it will also be fully 3D (meaning players can rotate the camera for an improved battlefield viewpoint). Accordingly, gameplay is supposed to remain the same as it originally was, though the on-screen unit count will be increased from 20 to 30 and there will be new character classes and skills available.

Famitsu also revealed that some of the original development team is working on this remake: Director Hiroshi Minagawa, character designers Akihiro Yoshia and Tsubasa Masao, musicians Hitoshi Sakimoto and Iwata Masaji, and designer Yasumi Matsuno have all come on board for the game. Matsuno is even adding new story and character elements.

I never played Tactics Ogre, but I did spend a few weeks addicted to Ogre Battle (the first game in the series) when I was stuck at home with a spinal injury that left me bedridden. Square Enix hasn't announced a release date for this new project, nor has the publisher stated if a Western port will come out. If the game is released in North America, though, I'll definitely be picking up a copy.

and... i would comment besides this, but i just have lost any mental processing power to establish a proper retort

thank you for this remake, now someone remake Grandia on any system with updated graphics(that was my one of my favorite PS1 games of all time and if you haven't played it you missed out)

....*gah*! ...i really wan't to say something too you, but i can't word it...

Is this the one that's out on the Virtual Console?

Glad to see it getting remade however! I loved the GBA one (I think it was on the GBA anyways.) so much.

I've played a very similar game, but I've never gotten a chance to try Tactics Ogre. Looks like a definite buy.

AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWESOME!!!

For those to whom FFTactics will never be enough, this is amazing good news. My gf is about to squee, take all precautionary measures!

I read about this earlier while at work and nearly squeeee'd out loud. Fucking awesome is all that needs to be said, and day one purchase for me. Now if only they would remake Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis too, then I'd be a very very happy camper.

Definitely gonna check this out.

And just recently the SNES version was hacked to insert the English translation for the PSX version (since both versions are absolutely identical).

SUSPICIOUS!

What's the release date!? Man, the PSP is heading towards retirement, but it's getting quite a lot of love on its way there.

well, Square has done the smartest thing since...getting Matsuno back in the late 90s. Maybe now he'll have a chance to finish his Ogre Battle Saga as it was meant to be a seven part series. Heck, if we're REALLY lucky he'll be able to make a sequel to Vagrant Story and do a Final Fantasy PROPERLY instead of having his vision turned into a butchered hackjob like FFXII

Wow, they sound really popular, and I've never even heard of these games.

...
...I bet they were never released in Europe/Australia.

*Check Teh Wikiz*

Yep, spot on. Although to be fair, they were released in Europe on the Virtual Console on the Wii. Which I don't have. >:(

The FF tactics format was actually based off of how Tactics Ogre worked. I highly suggest taking a look at the copy that's been out for the GBA if you're looking at the series.

I think I already did, twice.

This is the best gaming news I've heard in years.

I'm buying a PSP just for this one game. Tactics Ogre is one of my absolute favorite video games all time. Anyone who is a fan of Final Fantasy Tactics should check this game out. The game is challenging and fun and the story is top notch.

Awesome news, I can never have enough Tactical RPG's in my collection.

I loved Knight of Lodis! Such a well-made strategy game! In fact, I can't even think of a single strategy game since that was even half as good.

ONE OF THE BEST PS1 GAMES EVER!

I beat this game like 20 times, and invested over 400 hours into it. I'm digging this.

Ehh? Since when? The console is still incredibly popular in Japan and elsewhere. There's still quite a few good years behind her yet and the well received titles recently help keep that going.

On topic however this looks interesting as JSRPGs tend to work well with the PSP's portable format+controls, such as FF Tactics+Jeanne D'Arc. I'm hoping for an European release at least

The PSP replacement is already in the works at Sony, and we may see it announced as soon as TGS in October this year. With a release as soon as late 2011, there's not a whole lot of time left for the PSP.

Hrmm looks like i should dust off the psp, definately like the "tactics" games, in nearly any theme

God I sunk 100+ hours into quest mode alone, my army was spec'd out with the best gear and were all lvl 50. It was a such a good game after that trash that was FF Tactics Advance; Knight of Lodis was what Tactics Advance should have been story wise.

Well if it does show this year and comes out in 2011, then the PSP is going out in a blaze of glory with some of the games coming out in the following months. I just wish Squenix would hurry the fuck up with Agito...or at least give out some more info.

Yes Yes Yes Yes YES!

Jubilation!
