Nickelodeon Greenlights Steampunk Sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender

image

Avatar: The Last Airbender is getting a proper sequel next year that is being handled by the original series' creators.

Nickelodeon's Avatar: The Last Airbender was one of those great cartoon series that managed to hold a lot of simultaneous appeal for adults and kids by being relatively smart, funny, exciting, and moving at different points. Unfortunately, it also gave rise to M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender, the movie that many are claiming is the worst thing to hit theaters this year. However, Nickelodeon has some good news for fans, as the company announced that a sequel to the animated series is in the works and will start airing sometime next year.

The new series' working title is The Legend of Korra and will be handled by the original Avatar creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. The new cartoon will take place a couple of generations after the original series, though it sounds like it might fill in the plot points that were left open at the end of the show:

The Legend of Korra takes place 70 years after the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender and follows the adventures of the Avatar after Aang - a passionate, rebellious, and fearless teenaged girl from the Southern Water Tribe named Korra. With three of the four elements under her belt (Earth, Water, and Fire), Korra seeks to master the final element, Air. Her quest leads her to the epicenter of the modern Avatar world, Republic City - a metropolis that is fueled by steampunk technology. It is a virtual melting pot where benders and non-benders from all nations live and thrive. However, Korra discovers that Republic City is plagued by crime as well as a growing anti-bending revolution that threatens to rip it apart. Under the tutelage of Aang's son, Tenzin, Korra begins her airbending training while dealing with the dangers at large.

So, let's recap. An animated sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender? Check. Involvement of the original creators? Check. Steampunk setting? Check. M. Night Shyamalan is nowhere near this? Big check. This sounds excellent, and I'm sure that I'm not the only Avatar fan who's really looking forward to 2011.

Sounds interesting and hopefully will be as good as the original.

Old, shamanistic forces against an ever advancing world? Quite a change from the original story. Call me interested indeed. That and the fact that it has a steampunked setting. Hmhmhm I do love myself some steampunk.

I'm especially curious about how they're going to incorporate modern technology with bending. That could give us some very interesting machines indeed.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THIS IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But I do hope they explain what happened to Zuko's mom.

I kinda thought there would be a Zuko-based spin-off because of the ending of the series. BUT, this seems like it might have much potential, I will be eagerly anticipating it.

Steampunk?
I go get my goggles and top hat.

EDIT: That girl must be skilled as hell to master 3 styles...while the avatar is still alive.
Edit dos: Okay, I get it...She is the new Avatar. No more qouting me, okay?

Inoerite? I am disappoint, Zuko was a great character, lots of character development. I would have liked to have seen the sequel they were hinting at at the end of the first series.

Either way this is great.

Hooray :D As long as they have the same writers then I'm down!

the most awesome news ive read all day...i like to see bigs wigs giving the fans what they want...

I am interested as well! It also doesn't look like there milking it since its made by the original creators. I always wondered how the world would look once the Fire Nation was done away with.

I think maybe they will wrap up that storyline in this new series, or maybe have multiple spin-offs or something. At least I hope. If they are good, anyways.

They never said Aang is alive. In fact he pretty much has to be dead for her to be the next avatar. A son of Aang is apparently in this show.

Sounds sooweeet. Hope metalbending has a large part in this as I'm sure it will.

well this will be interesting

HELL YEA. Avatar's finale was one of the greatest in recent memory. But it left you wanting more.

Sweet! I'm going to go tell my sister(she loved that show).

Just remember, this isn't an apology for the movie. It was in the works since the series itself actually ended. Nickelodeon's still got some 'splainin' to do.

STEAMPUNK FTW!

I'm gonna watch this when this comes out ^_^

Me too.

I just really hope that it doesn't make me wish the series was on a different channel than Nick about half way through.

Watching the end of the first series made me feel like Nick's "Keep it for Kids" was holding it back.

Fuck yeah! Avatar was one of the nicer suprises for me this year (having watched all three seasons in around 2 weeks) and I was sad when it finally ended. This promises to be a worthy sucessor to it and another solid animated show. Though I'll miss Toph...

my only question is are there going to be guns or are they going to wimp out on that tech.

Yeah when I started to watch it I thought it was gonna be a kiddy show but I decided to keep watching and it got better :)

O.o The original Avatar series ended with an attempted carpet bombing of the world. I'm sure they won't wimp out on anything.

Steampunk? Sweeeet! Not enough stuff gets steampunked so will have to look into watchint it fo sure~

*Gets down on knees* Dear God, please keep this from sucking.

The reason why it wsa popular with adults is because its one of the few TV shows that ever had continual, and believable, character growth. I recently watched Avatar beginning to end and at every point the choices the characters made were believable. Only annoying thing about the series is I have to import the DVDs from Europe as it was never shown (or just wasn't very popular) in the UK. Hopefully they'll keep the broad and bright animation style as that was one of my favourite things.

I'm glad it was a kids show. The urge in the third season would have been to go "Darker and Edgier" but because it was on a childrens network it stopped them going too far and ruining it.

Well to be fair, you can probably owe much of it to Sokka, as he was the one in the series who really started finding ways to use bending to create modern technology (submarine for instance). I wouldn't be surprised if he was one of the major inspirations for the main city in this one.

I'll be interested in seeing this as well, Avatar was the best thing to hit Nickelodeon since Invader Zim or Angry Beavers.

There is a reason that not a lot of things are steampunk...
But still looking forward to it.

..WUT.

Oh that is cruel, man. "Hey you know that guy, you cared so much about? He died! :D."

I feel like a sad bear now.

First off: WHOOO! MOTHERFUCKING YEAH, BITCHES! WHOOO!!!!!!!

Now that I've gotten that out of the way, this seems really amazing. Actually sounds to me to be like more of a Miyazaki film than a TV-series but I hope this does well.

Very very very excited for this development! I'm also looking forward to possible cameos by the original gAang (well, all of them except for Aang, since Korra being there means Aang's dead).

Well it wasnt a kids show by the third season it was just a bit more mature.

Yes I agree that being dark and gritty could have ruined it but it was a bit "mature" by that I mean it makes you think.

They'll be dumb if he doesn't make some appearences like Roku did.

Despite being a kids show, I was very happy it was not an immature show. It had some quality, mature writing and addressed plenty of serious topics in a way that was still accessible to children. Heck I'd say it already was pretty dark from the get-go, just not in the "grrrr!" way we're so used to.

There aren't a lot of shows that take children seriously, Avatar did and I was very happy about that.

Sokka is totally underrated. I heard Shamalaladingdong fucked him up royally in the movie, I cannot forgive him for that.

wooooooooooooooooohoooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nickelodeon have redeemed themselves and given us a reason to anticipate 2011. Hopefully they'll explain some of the questions that this generation gap will have raised like where all of the original characters wound up(and who with for the people that battle over silly crap like "Kataang Vs Zatara") and how the Air Nomads(thanks in large part to Aang Im sure) are reborn

Well I wouldn't feel too bad, she's probably in her early teens, so Aang had a full life, living until his 60s. Though the fact that he had a son probably will make the Zutara fans lose their final glimmer of hope. I wouldn't be suprised to see some old faces though, like I'd imagine Sokka might be around as a member of the white lotus society.
