University Videogame Will Teach Girls to Say "No" to Sex

Well, the premise sounds unbelievably boring .. this might work but someone'll have their work cut out

vansau:
The University of Central Florida is currently working on a game designed to teach pre-teen girls about how to resist getting into sexual situations due to peer pressure.

!

You sure you mean "pre-teen"? As that's like... 12 and under. If Florida girls THAT young need edutainment video games to avoid getting pressured into sex, that means only one thing:

Who's going to buy this willingly again?
Seriously tell me one person who would.

The_root_of_all_evil:
...

Do people even talk to girls about these things?

Evidently not, because this sure as hell wouldn't cause me to be able to say 'no'. not to say that i'd say yes all the time, but most girls aren't too interested in games, especially pre-teen girls...

Why does everyone think girls are victims and don't enjoy sex? Is it impossible for a girl to seduce a guy? Such right-wing bull****.

Yeah, the game's being created for middle school girls, apparently. Apparently sex is really common at that age... I just took the road less traveled and decided to be a nerd/get my butt kicked instead.

We need a game to teach people to say "no"?
Just show them some slides of what a bad std can look like.

What

Thats all I can really think up as an appropriate answer to this... a flat "What."

I dont even think it warrants a questionmark at the end, and if it was a question, I doubt they could provide any sort of answer that would make sense to anything with brainwave paterns resembling sentient thought.

An reverse rape game, madness!

Hmm, looking at it THAT way... maybe the ultimate video game to tackle STDs, under-age pregnancy and Peer-pressure-sex is something like World of Warcraft.

You known what they say, abstinence is the best form of protection... but that what cost? FOR THE HOARD!

yeah all of about three people will play this.....nobody will want to play agame that they know will teach them a lesson...maybe if it was made like a horror game....maybe silent hill esque

...This could work.

Maria: See? *caresses James' face* I'm real...

The game freezes in place, and a text-box window suddenly appears.

Choice A: Succomb to Maria's flirtations; find a relatively clean room
Choice B: Mary!

*pause*

You chose Choice B

James: No! I have to find my wife!

*BLIP*

points for most awesome thing i have ever seen....but still i could see where making it a kind of horror game could work still

:-D

But yeah. They should probably work on it at least being somewhat appealing to their target audience, rather than just marketing it as a straight-up educational game. As it is, about six people will probably take this seriously.

Ironically this game is banned in Japan*.

*may be a lie

I'd play it just to annoy the developers by saying yes.

I'll laugh when this just turns into an American VN game.

Why is it just aimed at girls?

Believe me, they're every bit as bad when it comes to forcing guys into sex, it just depends on the person.

Because society embraces stereotyping. That way politician can try to actually make sense of the world. And fail.

Proteus214:
So let me get this straight, they are banking on the kids applying video game logic to real life situations...

Riddle me this: in this situation, who can't tell the difference between fantasy and reality?

by this logic many kids will run to cover when they hear a plane because they think it's a ac-130

OT:80% percent will say yes and 80% of this 80% will be men

So... what happens if you wanna have consensual sex? My bad, that doesn't exist anymore apparently!

What about guys? Guys are pressured into sex as well. In fact, there should be classes for guys to learn how to deal with peer pressure just as there are classes teaching women how to deal with it. This is sexism and nothing more.

Ah yes, if I could only undo all those times(read 0) as a teenage male I was pressured into having sex by voracious young women. If only I'd said no!!!

Believe it or not, not everyone is a copy of yourself. If you're going to teach women to refuse sex then you should also do the same for men. And hell, both classes are about not giving in to the peer pressure exercitated by your own class mates to have sex. The majority of people who lost their virginity at my high school did so due to peer pressure of their class mates and not because they wanted to.

NameIsRobertPaulson:
Most people already use video games as parent-replacements. This just takes it one step further.

Game Informer will still give it a 6/10.

6 out of 10 are for games that kinda suck but fans of the game will still like it. This will probably be a 4 or lower unless it is actually well made.

What an age we live in now where gaming can take over for that petty annoyance that some of us considered 'Parenting'.

Hey, it's just the next step to actually making sense in blaming videogames for occuring crimes really. After all, if someone gets solicited into underage sex it won't be the parents' fault anymore, but this videogame's fault for not doing its job! Or it'll be the family's fault for not taking their kid to experience this videogame! No person ever needs to be blamed!

...eeghhh

Well if it comes to that, I believe that all these "educational" games will be government funded.

I think I know who to blame.

I think they should try and make one for boys that will teach them that sex is overrated. I feel that would be a interesting challenge, but most likely futile.

Serris:
so wait, you need to own the motion capture thingies, or you'll get them with the game?
also, it sounds kind of dull the way it's put there.
it'd be hilarious to see bossfights though xD

Maybe they're a really charming guy...or (eurgh) Robert Pattinson?

OT: How would the levels progress? would you have one level where it tells you to get really drunk then play it and see if you can say no?

So will the suit, say, electrocute the player if they give in to peer pressure?

I knew my government was stupid, but this bullshit just takes it to new levels. Condoms and birth control pills, my fellow americans. USE THEM!

This is obviously backed by people who don't know the first thing about videogames. I'd say making really great games, worth the time spent on them works better as a deterrent for sex than this. There are so many misconceptions in the idea that a videogame a proper way to educate teenagers on sex that I'm not in the least bit surpised this is an academic project. Hmmm...

Taking a step back, how about an interactive reference guide that gave a non biased, objective view on sex for those who want to learn? Now that is the way I think they should go about this, instead of spoon feeding mores to an apathetic audience.

1. Steal Game mechanics
2. Change middle school kids to college kids
3. Make it a porn game
4. Watch UoCF rage over popularity of game over abstinence game
5. ?????
6. Profit

This right here. I'm currently being stalked for sex, the girl is RELENTLESS.

And the jumping into the skin thing? That makes me think it'll be a game where you play it at a special place rather than at home. So nobody's going to take it seriously.

1.) I don't WANT girls to say no to sex! I will never get laid!
2.) Why in the bloody fuck does this game need motion capture technology? Do the developers really think it's gonna be popular enough to warrant people buying motion capture suits? It could easily be made as a kind of reverse-dating sim. But I'd rather it not be made at all Isee comment 1)

I can't believe we're on page six of this thread already and no one has made any jokes about "cheating" on this game...

The fatal flaw in this plan, of course, is that the majority of teenage girls do not play video games beyond your basic Guitar Hero and such. Those that do likely are not having that much sex to begin with. Then there's the fact that this message has been crammed down kid's throats in the form of posters, books, magazines, advertisements, after-school specials, school meetings, and God knows what else. Video games will likely not be any more effective. Combine that with the fact that in order for the message to even be recieved, these girls are actually going to have to BUY the damn game (or have their parents buy it for them. In which case, it's unlikely they'll ever play it) and it's just more of the same ol' same ol': An inept government wasting our tax-dollars to create the illusion that it actually gives a fuck about us, morals, or anything other than expanding its own power. Lovely.

Mostly you hear stories about teenage girls getting pregnant and raped at parties etc. I suppose that might be the incentive here.

Dunno about them but if they want to prevent it, you need to be a lot more strict as a parent and tell them about the damages it can cause you, emotionally and physically.
Or you know, we could just all wear chastity belts until your 16+, there's a quick fix.

EDIT: Or cheat the game. when you have sex you get a Steam Achievement: "Laid Sideways!"

Getting raped really isn't much of a choice thing haha...

um no one will play that.

"a video game to stop teenagers having sex? They've had that for years; it's called World of Warcraft"

*BaH-DUM-Tshhh*
