Maryland Declares Official Civilization V Day

image

The state of Maryland has issued an official proclamation declaring September 21, 2010, as Sid Meier's Civilization V Day.

Crash course in Maryland: Parked on the eastern seaboard of the United States, it's the 42nd-smallest state but fifth in population density and first in median income, at $68,080. Its largest city is Baltimore but its capital is actually Annapolis, and its official flower is the Black-eyed Susan. Despite its small size, Maryland is the home of Big Huge Games, Bethesda Softworks and of course Firaxis, and the videogame industry generated over $1 billion in tax revenues for the state in 2008. And now it's giving Sid Meier's new Civ game its very own special day.

"Sid Meier is known throughout Maryland and the world as a pioneer of electronic gaming, having co-founded his first studio in Baltimore County, Maryland in 1982, and today continuing a tradition of developing the talent and creativity of future generations," Governor Martin O'Malley said in a statement.

"Now, therefore, I, Martin O'Malley, Governor of the State of Maryland, do hereby pay tribute to the outstanding achievements of Sid Meier on this day, July 28, 2010, and hereby recognize September 21, 2010, as Sid Meier's Civilization V Day, and call upon the people of our State to join in celebrating this salute."

Sadly, this isn't likely to translate into a paid day off work, but the recognition is still awfully nice, isn't it? Sid Meier's Civilization V comes out - you guessed it - on September 21.

WHAT.

That's taking things a bit far, isn't it?

The Governor just wants an excuse to take the day off and play Civ5.

I didn't even realize that Civ games were THIS popular.
This is going to get irritating closer to September 21st.....

Why?
That's stupid. Non-gamers will have no idea that the holiday even exists.

Andy Chalk:
and call upon the people of our State to join in celebrating this salute."

Urrm, this is incredibly weird.

Why would they? As much as I hate to say it, it's jsut a game, and it's not even a massively popular one at that.

Wow, I'd never think I'd live to see the day when Maryland does something interesting.

I live there, and in Baltimore County, if you didn't know.

I love my state right now.

Is it pointless? Sure, but its still awesome. Now how do we celebrate it?

The timing is pretty bad, it should of been the day before... The celebrations will mainly consist of playing the game alone. :P

This has to be some kind of first.

Go videogames!

I think it's kind of cool. Civ has always been a huge game to a certain demographic of hard-core gamers and it's cool to see SOMEONE in government celebrate the juicy goodness that is video games.

I'm holding out for Doom-fest 2011

Well, it had better not get delayed now...

I'm with you on that, but it's only a matter of time before O'Malley does something stupid again.

...

Why do these headlines keep leaving me stuck for words?

I mean, this is nice and all, but will most of Maryland even know what Civilization (the game, that's not a snark) is?

haha, awesome. Such a great game series should be rewarded.

Nice~ Its great to see his work been recognised for the awesome it is! I only wish my work would give me release day off lol

Thats pretty cool.

Are they going to act out a btalle from Civ or something?

And have Pikesmen stabbing tanks to death?

Stupid Pikesmen, killing my tanks somehow...

Stay up till 4 in the morning playing as Alexander the Great? (Or Abe Lincoln?)

21st of September? Why, that's my birthday!
Also, that's genuinely awesome.

I'm really looking forward to Civ 5. I mean if I had the power to give it its own day where I live, I would.

I'm a resident of Baltimore County, Maryland and as much as I love games, I think this is just ridiculous. Maybe that's because I have never played any of the Civ games, maybe it's because Martin O'Malley has f'ed up every decision he's made since he was elected. Either way, this is dumb.

I don't get it... doesn't being the 42nd smallest state make it also the 9th biggest state? Or 10th or whatever it is

Plus our state fossil is the Ecphora gardnerae.

OT: Is this guy really the best thing to come out of Maryland(aside from seafood and old bay seasoning)?

I like the civ games, but this is just flat-out stupid. First off, why would it be a holiday? It's just another day, and you won't be able to celebrate it ever again, and the majority of the population will just be confused. It's pointless and really just foolish in the end.

Only one explanation mate.

A wizard did it.

OT: This is.... interesting. Pointless like other users have said but interesting. At least I know when Civ 5 is coming out.

Jim Grim:

Just so you know your parents probably conceived you on Valentine's day.

Just thought I'd ruin that holiday for you. Enjoy Civ day anyway, An unruinable holiday!

No. Just no. It's the 42nd smallest, nothing more.

Does it matter? Even if they don't, this will make it easier to spread knowledge about the game and gaming in general, which can only be a good thing.

HOLY CRAP

*ehem* I believe this calls for a nerdgasm?

Maryland resident here. This is actually kind of shocking. I mean, the only two awesome nerd things to come out of Maryland are Jim Henson and Otakon (which is this weekend.) pretty darn cool.

This is pretty amazing! Everyone should get the day off to play Civ :P

And in other news, 2010 has been rechristened "The year of the Depend brand Adult Undergarment".

Now, to wait for the news post about a game delay for Civ 5...

There's some bribery of public officials we can all believe in!

I think this makes Maryland the #1 best state, right? That's what I've been saying for eons.
