Halo 2600 Brings Seriously Old-School Action

Here's a blast from the imaginary past: Halo 2600, a fully-playable vision of what the hit shooter might have looked like if it had been released three decades ago on the classic Atari console.

Imagine: A long-awaited new game is on the cusp of being released, exclusively for the hottest console on the market. It's an epic, action-packed tale of one man's stand against an army of hostile aliens, played out across multiple, highly-varied environments rendered in stunning visual detail with cutting-edge technology.

Oh, and it's 1978.

That's what you get with Halo 2600, a look at what might have been if the hit Bungie franchise had debuted about three decades ago. The game was created by Ed Fries, the former vice president of publishing at Microsoft, and features just about everything you'd expect, with blocky versions of all the Covenant bad guys, primary-colored levels, power-ups and a perfect chiptune soundtrack.

Word on the street is that lucky attendees of the Classic Gaming Expo in Las Vegas - which, I'm sorry to say, ended yesterday - had a shot at one of 500 copies of the game on a real-life Atari 2600 cartridge. Those who didn't have the fortune to be in Vegas over the weekend can still give it a try, as a Flash version of the game is available at Halo2600.com. Helpful hint: The gun is one screen up from the starting point, so that's probably a good place to start. Now get out there and make the galaxy safe for humanity!

I've never even played a 2600 game, and I think that's pretty awesome.

hmm the flash game isn't loading for me

It may have crashed due to the amount of people playing it. Or maybe it was taken down for some reason. Best thing to do is leave it for awhile then go back to it later I guess?

OT: It sounds awesome. I have a soft spot for this sort of thing, like that left 4 dead remake in 16 bit.

Is it weird that I actually enjoy this game more than I do the real Halo games?

Also, link here for those who're having problems.

So... You're telling me that that flash game was ported to an actual 2600 cartridge that will play in my system? When is the first one going up on ebay?

..this is so awesome.
I think i have a new time waster for this week.

And the way the opening theme sounds in classic Beep is cool.

No, it was made as a 2600 game and then ported to flash I think.

that was still better than MW2
How can halo ever not be good!

Huh? Now that is a fun game even better without several people insulting you.

Either way, they made a new 2600 game. I need it.

hehe, nice period title.

Use with joystick! OMG! The future is here!

I have to say that sounds kind of cool in a crazy retro kind of way. Plus I just heard what the Halo theme sounds like in eight bit sound effects.

Epic.

it's kinda hard only being able to shoot left and right with those... grunts that shoot mega fast in any direction...

The game froze my browser :P

This reminds me of Left 4 Dead 2D. That fan remake. both look good.

imnotparanoid:

Umm... it's not good.

Loved the attempt at the theme tune.

I'm not listening !

Hehe. Remindes me of Pitfall.

If you push two buttons at the same time, you can shoot at angles too.

It's a fun idea. I liked the intro music, especially when I realized what it is. These sorts of pre-makes certainly make us realize how far games have come. But there's no chance I could log a few hundred hours in one of these.

Nope, the article says they made 500 actual cartridges. I don't want to think what obscene amount of money these will bring in on Ebay here in a month or two.

hmm that seem like a laugh, I'll give it a try later.

Its actually fun, go try it out.

how the hell do you fire ive pressed every god damn button!

Does anyone else have this problem? I cannot load the flash and I do have the right plug-ins for my browser [ Firefox ]

Other than that, it looks really cool and all though Halo isn't really my franchise, it's a good shooter.

That was pretty fun. Playing that on the actual system would be a blast.

I wonder how many people who discover this will actually think that Halo first came out on the 2600?

Make a web page or facebook page claiming to have "Rediscovered the Original Halo!!!111" and watch the fanboys roll in.

Link's not good, 404 error. Just FYI.

What are the odds this makes it into Game Room?

HOW DO YOU FIRE!??!?!?!?!?

Seriously.....

Digikid:
HOW DO YOU FIRE!??!?!?!?!?

Seriously.....

Walk up a screen grab the gun, then press spacebar.

Couldn't figure out how to shoot, was I just supposed to avoid the aliens?

I enjoyed the classic version of Left for Dead more.

You did sorta enjoy playing 3 at my house.
...right?

UnableToThinkOfName:

...right?

Eh, not really. I mean, it was fun, but in the same way as any coordinated activity with friends is fun.

I played the singleplayer at Zaks house. URGH.
