Trailer: Portal 2 Co-Op Doubles The Madness

The co-op mode in Portal 2 gives players twice as many portals, and promises to drive players twice as batty.

The latest episode of GameTrailers TV featured an interview with Portal 2 writer Eric Wolpaw and an exclusive trailer highlighting the game's co-op mode. The trailer is extremely short, but it gives players the basic idea of what they'll be doing in the Portal 2 co-op experience.

The co-op mode in Portal 2 shouldn't really be called a mode because it's an entire set of unique levels with their own storyline that are as lengthy as the single-player game. The basic premise involves the trailer's two player-controlled robot characters that were created by GlaDOS to replace humans, which we all know have proven to be trouble. The issue at hand for GlaDOS is that her tests need some kind of human observer, rather than a robot testing robots, so she puts them through practice tests and then sends them deep into the bowels of Aperture Science to find human relics.

GlaDOS's goal is to somehow make these robots more human by having them derive meaning from these relics, which may be anything from a "World's #1 Dad" mug or an old cartoon. The robots will hopefully be able to pass a human "turing test" afterward.

Wolpaw says that the reason Portal 2's co-op levels are completely different is because "four portals changes everything." More information on the co-op campaign will be available at PAX Prime in a couple of weeks.

4 portals, all the extra elements that are going in, this is gonna make me and my friends smack our heads against our desks so hard that we will probably have to go to the Emergency room :P

Looks good, but I'm not sure I want to play with someone else in a Portal game, for the immersion...

Anyway, /shameless plug.

I can tell that the levels will be more complex then that, but the trailer is still cool, and the 'bots are adorable.

Awesome. Between the co-op and the new testing materials revealed at Gamescom, Portal 2 looks to be even better than Portal 1. In fact, I predict it will blow Portal 1 out of the water. It looks epic.

I want to play it now! The co-op is going to cause arguments though, if typical co-operative interactions between myself and my other gaming housemate are anything to go by...

I am very interested on playing this game coop with my brother.
Hope it doesn't has the Valve Time Syndrome.
But it sure does look far better than the original Portal, and that is an achievement, as the original was basically perfect.

Portal 2 looks better and better with every new piece of info I see.

Must... resist...

It is damn awesome. I hope once I get to Uni I have a decent gaming room mate, otherwise I'm doomed.

sweet...was hoping for a trailer or glimpse soon

but idk the first thought I had as I saw this was just how insanely difficult it could get! 0.0 nice

Hey cool, I submitted this (then again thousands of users probably submitted it).

It looks awesome, I'm always in the market for a good co-op game.

This looks like so much fun, you cannot believe.
My only worry is that finding good co-op partners online is going to be like finding a toothbrush in a tree-trunk.

Those robots have something of a cartoon duo. Adorable and funny.
On the topic of co-op in a puzzling game, I have really no idea how this will work out. But it sounds amazing.

Woot. Let's just hope it supports Local Co-op for all of the X-bots. I am SICK of having to pay to be in an online match with someone down the street >_<

4 portals? I can imagine the headaches now.

Hopefully some of my friends will be picking up Portal 2...though chances are they'll likely still be playing Black Ops by then and will barely have time for anything else...

*sigh*

Dude. They are going for a literal mindfuck here. I am glad. I am interested in this game now!

This co-op looks fun. Portal 2 is shaping up to be a amazing game.

I want it. very. very badly. I alomst lost it when i watched all the trailers in a row the first time. This doesn't help.

Looks like fun. Yes...fun...I remeber that.

looks cool me like

Looks friggin awesome.

That video kinda let me down....could do that alone. Excited as hell for the game.

Split-Screen for the console versions my friend, and there may also be the possibility of unlocking the splitscreen in the PC version like on the Left 4 Dead games.

i need a new set of undies.....

Not unless you had a portal gun that can shoot around corners!
You could set up the first two for the infinite falling loop alone, but you need the second guy to reposition the portal to launch him up.
But I feel your let down, mostly because I want to see something more substantial...i.e. I want the game right now.

Anyway, co-op looks great, and the trailer (more of a teaser) put a smile on my face, so mission accomplished.

H...o...l...y... HELL!

Those two robots make a cool and funny duo as someone else pointed out.
Can't wait, so 2 mind fucks are better than 1.

People are going to take greifing to a whole new level. Looks good, but I can imagine the dickheads now.

Alrighty, this should be a solid game from Valve. Looking forward to when I can pick a copy up for less than $30....

Oh god, oh god oh god. I'm a bit scared for my sanity.

Oh, I cannot wait. Portal 2, Halo: Reach, Fable 3, Gears 3, Hunted, CoD: BlOps (lol), Scott Pilgrim, Rock Band 3 and the new L4D 1 & 2 DLC?

Such a great time for couch co-op. I predict many nights that include friends, beer, pizza, Xbox and broken noses. Rock on!

Having watched the entire episode, i cant wait for pax, theyre going to show of so much stuff

Well I now know what my most wanted upcoming game is !

Moar CoOp! Moar CoOp! Woot!

I was thinking a german shepherd in a pile of shitzus, in the dark. Nibbly!

Well not everybody can be against GlaDOS and her violent robicidal ways...
Remember, those who grief only further GlaDOS's goals and her own destiny.

Epic, it's like having 2 campaign, can't wait to see how this turns out....
