Metal Gear Solid: Rising Still Has Plenty of Stealth

Just because Metal Gear Solid: Rising is focused around a cyborg samurai doesn't mean it won't feature stealth-focused gameplay.

Konami's Metal Gear Solid: Rising is a series spin-off that focuses on Raiden, a cyborg ninja of sorts, instead of stealthy camouflage master Snake. It's said to be more of an action title than previous Metal Gear efforts, with Raiden shown at E3 slicing the hell out of everything with his nano-sword, but the game's creative director Shigenobu Matsuyama says that Rising is still a stealth game too.

It's just that the stealth in Rising will be an evolution of what we saw from Raiden in Metal Gear Solid 2 and from Snake in every other version of the game. Thanks to what Matsuyama calls Raiden's "super abilities" and his "high speed," players will engage in "team hunting stealth" rather than running around cutting enemy soldiers in half all day.

"[Raiden] is very high speed and acrobatic," Matsuyama told Videogamer. "So, you might ask, where's the stealth? But, using his super abilities, his high speed, we call it the team hunting stealth. So you're not going to wait for the soldiers to pass by, you're going to aggressively hunt without getting spotted."

Matsuyama wants to show players why they should enjoy taking on the role of Raiden, as opposed to when many were incredibly upset over his replacement of Snake as a main character in MGS 2. "It's a new type of stealth, but it's still a stealth game," he continued. "With the katana, zan-datsu battle, and this stealth element, this is what I really wanted to accomplish for Rising, and when players play they will probably go 'Oh, I can't play this kind of style with Snake' so I'm very confident they'll be satisfied.'"

Matsuyama also said that he plans to prove that Raiden isn't the whiny brat people think he is by showing off the "strong parts of his mental state." He says: "And don't worry, we're going to try and make him not the weak Raiden, but really strong willed, and physically strong - make it really cool, so that people really will really enjoy controlling him."

That's great and all, but I really just want to slice lots of guys in half as shown in the E3 trailer. And make fruit salad.

Once I get a PS3.

Also, why do I get a sense of deja vu from this news bit?

Sounds cool, I'm probably going to be the only one who is gonna say I am looking forward to this one.

In before "I love snake to much to play a game without him"

Edit=ninjad. I am not the only one exited.

You can get it on 360 too.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

You know, that kind of make sense. Raiden is now, a Uber Ninja, he pretty much can just run and slice his way to victory.

That, and I'm going to make him batman:

"I'm not going to kill you, But I want tou to tell your friends about me."
"WHAT ARE YOU1?"
"I'm Raiden...The fruit saled maker."

To hell with your silly stealth! I am going to cut bitches to ribbons because I can.

They can't try and show that he is some sort of badass after number 2. That solidified his whininess right there and they went from one extreme to another. This showed not him becoming strengthened by everything that has happened to him, but that hes putting on a huge front to cover up the fact that he is still that whiny insecure little bitch underneath that armor.

I liked Raiden, though. He one of my favorite characters on that game.

Whether it's stealthy or not it's still full of contradictions and bad character design. They can try to bring me back with promises of no kills and stealth gameplay, but they're going to have a hard time.

Dr. wonderful:

Buy it on PC! Arkham Asylum was best on PC, as rated by Digital Foundry themselves.

(yes, you can use a gamepad, any type you like)

It'll be super-cheap on Steam.

As i person who has never liked an MGS game i hope i can still run around cutting everything up like a madman

This is on the 360 right? If it is, I'm so pre-ordering it.

Edit: I hope that they remake/update the old MGS games for multiplatform. That would be so smexy.....

(I personally know several guys who would love to play MGS on the 360, and PC)

I have a feeling one of the high speed stealth moves is going to be slamming a melon on an enemy, and then slicing it in half as his mates watch in horror.

I look forward to slicing the the ever loving crap out of people

Phew.

That's a relief. They're keeping it stealthy and it sounds intruiging.

Ha! I wouldn't be surprised in all fairness!

I can't wait to see how this plays out! ^_^

To be honest, I was pretty sure this was gonna be an action rather than a stealth game at all. This news intrigues even more to the game now, can't wait to get my hands on it!

This is the kind of stealth I like, none of that Splinter cell stuff.

Like a predator stalking prey, hell yes!

As long as I can use the battlecry, "FRUIT SALAAAAAAAAAD!!!!!" Ill try it.

The slicing action is somewhat distrubing to me though, cause I saw the trailer where one guy had been cut to little chunks...

I'm sorry Mr. Matsuyama, but Raiden is and always will be a whiny brat.

He was the whiny brick wall in MGS 2 and the whiny anchor in MGS 4. Worst yet, everytime Snake talked to him, Snake turned into a whiny father figure.

It's the polite thing to do

Game looks AMAZING! Been looking forward to it since the announcement! Seems like every game that comes out of the MGS series is pure gold. (I still wish they would make MGS4 for 360 so everyone can enjoy it.

I hope this goes something like the alien mission stealth in AvP where is isn't so much about sneaking but more jumping from the shadows to kill someone then being back in hiding before they even know their buddy is dead.

I was sold at the slicing!

But which version to get?

360 or PS3...

You know, i loved Arkham Asylum and all, but between that, Conviction, and this, the "Predatory Stealth" game is starting to tire me out a little.

Every one knows its still steathy but i think there is just too much action, i prefer games where you can sneak past some one without killing them (listened to ,to much war is bad MGS speechs).i just don't think i'll like it.
maybe they should start making old style ninja steath game, that is what it sounds like and three reasons it would be better than this :1. radain is a shit character ,making him a cyborg ninja or a crazy spyco-murderer(have yu seen the gore 0_o)ain't gonna change that
2.the point of sneaking is that sometimes you have to leave somepeople alive.its seems since your the one killing people and you have a gun this won't be nessicary, and this defeats the point of the whole killing is bad thing, because why let them live when you can jump around chopping people up and gunning them down
3.wouldn't sneaking around in long grass in black sneaking up on a imperial japaness castle lit by lanterns and guarded by samurai, be so cool:).

...of course it will have stealth...its an MGS game...I never expected it not to have stealth, its what they do...

Damn straight! I would rather play a survival stealth game where I have to sneak so that I could live like in MGS3. Stealth games these days focus on scaring the living shit out of your enemies and that sucks because they are missing the pint of stealth. It's supposed to be scary and intense for the player not for npc's. But I'm probably going to get this as a huge MGS fan. I hear there's gonna be a PC release.

I want to chop things up into little pieces. That's why I'm interested in this game to start with. I'm happy with stealth as long as there's also plenty of chopping. Oh, and ripping people's spines out. Never forget the spine-ripping.

Onyx Oblivion:

Wait for the comparisons my friend. Wait for them.

OT:

So we've gone the way of Sam Fisher and speeded up the stealth?

With Sword slashing?

Calumon: Why can't you people fly? It's really cool and easy.

Onyx Oblivion:

There's only one way to find out....
...FIGHT

OT: Should be fun, although I will miss the slower pace of the old MGS games. (I also don't think it should be called "MGS:Rising". I think it should just be "Metal Gear Rising". It's too different to the Solid games)

I'm hoping that the game does end up playing as this man has described. Not only is the premise itself rather intriguing, I'm one of the tremendous few people that actually liked Raiden in Metal Gear Solid 2.

I always wanted to play a stealth game where you hunt!

Silent Eagle:

That is all, That is all my friend.

MGS2 was the best MGS game. And plus you only actually control Solid Snake for 1 and 4. In 2 you get to play them in the beginning for like an hour but it switches out for Raiden and let me tell you the swordfighting as Raiden was a lot of fun in that game.

And it's good to know that you can play stealthy and beat the game without killing anyone. It looks like it will feel more like an action game though it will still be definitively Metal Gear Solid... I'm very excited.
