The third installment in the extremely odd mash-up Dynasty Warriors Gundam (or Gundam Musou) will be hitting the HD consoles this winter with a cel-shaded twist.
I often wonder how the idea came up to make a Dynasty Warriors game with the giant robots from the Gundam franchise. Yeah, Bandai owns both properties, but who was the madman who decided that ancient feudal China and the far future of Earth were a match made in heaven? We may never know how the games came about, but we do know that there's a third one on its way.
The game was formally unveiled in this week's issue of Famitsu (the one that revealed Ace Attorney Investigations 2 and gave the new Pokemon games a perfect score), which pegged it for a Japanese release this winter - so presumably sometime later here in the West.
Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3 has a new cel-shaded visual style that might bring it more in line with the look of the various Gundam animated series. It will also reportedly include beefed-up enemy AI (something which the Dynasty Warriors games have desperately needed for ages), and support online multiplayer functionality. Joining the roster of the franchise's characters and mecha previously in the series will be the cast of Gundam X, Gundam 00, Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory, and Unicorn Gundam.
The Dynasty Warriors Gundam games have always been mindlessly fun if not ever particularly good, so consider me pleased by the news - particularly the inclusion of suits from 00 and Unicorn. Now, I only ask Namco Bandai that they either include more of the original Japanese voice work in the Western release so I don't have to listen to Kira Yamato's horrific dub work every time I want to play as the Strike Freedom.
Either that, or - since 00 is in it now - make SEED's Dearka and Wing's Quatre playable characters, so that I can have a four-man squadron composed entirely of characters voiced by Brad Swaile. I'm a flexible guy, ok?
(Or, you know, they could bring some of the genuinely goodGundam games over here for a change, but I won't cross my fingers.)
The School of the Undefeated of the East! The winds of Kings! Zenshin! Keiretsu! Tempa Kyouran! LOOK! THE EAST IS BURNING RED!! --- Thats code for, "I'm totally buying this"
Sweet! This freaking rules! I can't wait for the new one... I've played the first two damn near to death at this point. And good to hear they're bumping up the AI a bit. The Warriors games always seem to lack in that realm a bit. But hell, they're mindless fun, who needs more, right?
Glad I didn't get the second installment now, I was dissapointed that 00's Gundams were not in it, I shall be getting this one without looking at reviews first.
You're right in that as games they are crap when compared to a lot of others out there. That doesn't stop the fact that if you let them take you in they become as addcitive as drugs, and you can't say no to more.
At the moment I'm slashing my way through Warriors Orochi 2 as I'm not into robots and the whole gundam thing. Honestly until something new comes out to take my mind off it I'll be playing it till then.

Oh god, I can't stand listening to any of their whiny bullshit, I never play as them, normally it's Jerid in the Gundam Mk.II or Char in the Sazabi
EDIT: Athrun from SEED Destiny (yes, Athrun the whiny bitch) is voiced by the same person as Edd from Ed, Edd 'n' Eddy! What the hell?!

And whilst we're at it, bring in Lan Hikari from Megaman NT Warrior
Why the hate? They're no worse than any other genre. In racing you get the best car and it's boring from there on out. In shooters you get the best weapons and it's boring as there's little competition. In sports the players change, but the objective is always the same.
I'll admit a bias as I only know of a select few DW games I haven't purchased. I will say they all have their faults of getting extremely repetitive, but if you hate that, hate all games (and other media at that). Strikeforce was supposed to bring multiplayer to the table and failed miserably as no one could join up with one another.
Gundams (which I don't even think are very interesting) at least add something to the experience by changing up the standard Cao Cao-Sun Jian-Liu Bei trifecta.
A series that is terribly boring after one playthrough: Legend of Zelda (insert name here) a (verb) to the (time period). Sword, shield, hookshot, boomerang and boss battle (repeat).

And your saying the DW games dont repeat themselves after 5 minutes? Kill this guy, Kill bunch of guys, Kill more guys, Kill General. Repeat. God I had more fun playing Oblivion. And that game bored me to TEARS.

Seeing the title of this headline did cause me to facepalm, but it's still probably a purchase.
I've never played a Samurai Warriors game, I only played a bit of Orochi 2, and I'm not a fan of Gundam. But I've bought every DW game (apart from Extreme Legends and Strikeforce (those pieces of crap!)) since number 2, and I found DW: Gundam (1) almost up to standard. This is likely an insta-buy for me.
I can't wait for DW7 though, hopefully they've fixed the combat issues they created with 6.
I'm so excited for this. I'm kinda happy to see Stardust added to the line up, but still no 8th M.S. Team? I'll try to save my rage until the full game confirms it.
*looks at the headline, then at his collection of Gundam DVDs that unexplicably increases randomly throughout the years* My wallet is going to hate me when this comes out.
So the house of Funk can finally ally with the Clan of Chrome? The students of "Master Asia's school of hot blooded men" are united at last?
I want this game.
Also, they need to hurry up and put Deathscythe in the damn game. I know, I know, they need to nerf him some more because he's so awesome, but it doesn't take three games right?
...Hm. You know when you type a post, and then you lean back in your chair and ask "why?"
Yeah.
P.S. Agreed completely on the AI in DW. It got to the point when to make it more interesting me and my friends would sit in our stronghold, go to the shops (by which time everyone else on our side was dead save for us), come back and go to town. But the peasant AI was just pathetic.
i still dont get it to this day...i dont think dubbed voices over japanese games are bad at all. if i can't understand what they are saying i see no reason as to why i would want the original voice actors for it.
but besides that i am very excited, i just got the 2nd one recently and even though it is mindless fun..ITS FUN! so i'll def. be interested to play this next one!

Just watched gameplay of the dubbed, Why didn't they just hire the original dub actor to do Kira's voice? The person who does his voice in the game, I agree is really bad.

The last two were good dumb fun. I enjoyed them greatly. I've since traded them away because I didn't want to slogh through upgrading every pilot and suit individually after I finished the story modes, but i'm glad to hear the 3rd is coming out and is Multiplatform.
Also, agreement with John about bringing some of the GOOD Gundam games over. There are a plethora of REALLY good Gundam and Macross games that never leave Japan. Sad Panda :(

You do know that they had online multiplayer in No. 2, right?
