Kotick Itching to Sell Cutscenes As Films

If they made actual movies that weren't cutscenes, yes.
But knowing Kotick he'll remove cutscenes from games and sell them seperately.

I hope he doesn't read this. He'll use it.

Pretty much the Only company I'd pay to watch a movie from is Valve.

Now those guys know how to make a good movie:

This is why I want them to make a Half-Life movie. IT WILL BE EPIC.

Currently we get to watch cutscenes for free via youtube. I personally dont think cutscenes alone are worth buying. Cutscenes outside of the game lack context and really pale in comparision to full motion picture video. The price should be around 5 dollars or so. 30 dollars is more than most dvds sell for these days.

Cut-scenes rarely make good movies unless designed from the ground up to stand alone as a goddamn movie!

I think this man should rename himself to Bob page (Deus Ex).

soon there will be order again. A new age. Aquinas spoke of the mythical city on the hill, soon that city will be real and we will be crowned its kings. Or, better than kings... Gods!

Way ahead of you chief.

I think this is ridiculous. I could easily see some of the guys making cinematics for video games producing animated movies that could compete with the ones hitting the big screen, perhaps ushering in an era of non-kiddie animation.

That said, I would not pay simply for game cinematics, nor would I buy a game that required me to pay for it's cinematics seperatly.

What's more I have some concern over this happening largely because of the way a lot of people use such cinematics for fan made videos on Youtube and such. If such a business was to launch, it would lead to more ridiculous fan-persecution, in order to try and force people to buy this stuff.

Frankly, I can't believe the game industry doesn't believe it's getting enough money out of gamers as it is. I mean cripes. $50-$60 isn't enough already? Nor is a multi-billion dollar industry?

Truthfully I'm actually thinking a huge video game crash would be a good thing at this point on soooo many levels.

Oh hey guys lets cut out a major part of a game and call it a movie but! make it cost more then a normal movie would cost.

seriously wouldn't you be a bit confused when playing a game when you cut to the next level, and your were suposed to watch a cutscene explaining why you went from the lava level to the jungle level? Just think how confusing final fantasy will be without them.

It seems to me that Activision is simply trying to troll gamers at this point. I'll bet Mr. Kotick is a member of 4chan, or perhaps even their leader. I mean, sewing together cut scenes and calling them films!?! who the fuck does-

... never mind.

This man seems to know about marketing and gaming as much as I know about the dark side of Sun's vagina! I swear to god he must be the biggest troll out there, or just completely retarded.

What a fucking cock.

It's also why if they Do, it'll be epicmazing.

That's just a horrible idea. Seriously, who would buy that when you can just look up the cutscenes on youtube?

So. . . He wants to make games. . . And sell the story separate? We will see, friend Kotick. We will see.

I read the thread-title and thought there was an exaggeration somewhere.

...only to ultimately find it fairly accurate

I haven't gone through all the replies as this thread is well populated already but in case no one has mentioned it. Galerians Rion comes to mind. They did exactly that, took all the cutscenes from the original Galerians game, added a new soundtrack and pretty much made it a movie. It could've been better but prettying up recycled content doesn't seem like the smartest decision. I bet it'd be mostly for the console side as most PC enthusiats know how to rip the movie files off and even then if you don't, you can boot up the game and watch them from there... or youtube even.

good thing i just play portable games :3

if you try making movies out of those you would get laughed at because you are a fucktard.

Just another reason for me to never buy something associated with Activision ever again.

Sorry Bungie, but my love of you guys is overridden by my livid hate of Kotick and Activision.

Up next:
Activision to sell Oxygen.
Starcraft brand Oxygen that is, for starcraft enthusiasts.

You know there is a company who sells Oxygen...I'm not kidding.

Big Ox, seriously it's air in a can.

Woah there folks. Check your fire. Make sure you read the whole article. They're not talking about actually making you pay extra money to see cutscenes in a game you already own. They're just talking about packing a bunch of high quality cutscenes on DVD for the fans. And that's something completely harmless that they've done once before.

I misunderstood what was being said at first, and I thought I was going to have to finally organize that lynch mob.

Boy would that have been embarrassing.

No, no, no. That's what I thought was being said at first too. They're just talking about putting the cinematics on a DVD you can buy. They'll still be in the game like normal.

I....I don't know what to say. That's fucking stupid. Does this man actively try to get as much of the gaming community as possible to dislike him?

EDIT: Okay, I misinterpreted his aim a bit there.

Still, unless they flesh them out into more of a story and include cinematic bits from where the actual game was, this is a stupid idea.

"Hey."

"Hey guys."

"Hey, listen."

"Hey Guys, listen."

"I've got..."

"Guys, listen."

"I've got the best idea ever!"

"Listen, you guys."

"Listen."

"I'm gonna..."

"Hey, listen you guys."

"I'm gonna start selling games, without any music or sound... And then make a fortune by letting people pay 20 bucks to download the added audio!"

First he'll just make them available on the side, then he'll cut them out and ONLY make them available on the side - and after that, he'll go even further, you'll see. Be afraid, be very afraid.
(also, if the above monologue would ever become reality, I call dibs for mentioning it)

I don't know... Crisis Core had some really decent cinematics (think Advent Children). If they would re-compress it at 720p or 1080p... Who knows.

I get the feeling this wouldn't cause nearly as big a stink if anybody but Kotick had said it.

He thinks it's going to sell? :/

Is he mentally challenged? Actually that's just a fact by now.

But seriously this will never go through and Blizzard would have to spend a few years to fill up those other 50 minutes with CGI movies. Because Starcraft 2 didn't have that many CGI cut scenes. Unless now Kotick is talking about all the in game cut scenes which explains the story with the in game graphics.

But if Blizzard where to make over 1 hour of CGI in their game then that would be awesome. Going to a cinema for it is just stupid.

There's a certain purity of purpose behind planning out a product that caters exclusively to those people with no self control. It's almost commendable. I mean, it's sheer exploitation, but I don't have to buy it, and won't be effected. Tell you what Bobby, if extra profits increase your revenue, can you encourage sales by lowering prices? Do that, I give you the thumbs up. Maybe it's exploitative, but it at least is voluntary exploitation.

Wow, that has to be the dumbest thing I have ever heard.

He obviously doesn't realize why cut-scenes exist. They exist to complement the game-play. Without the cut-scenes, the game-play is pointless and confusing, without the game-play, the cut-scenes are just confusing.

They need each other, you can't separate the two and still make it work. Not directly at least.

I guess he's going from the runaway success of Advent Children?

I call bullshit on this one. This is the worst idea ever. aside from the twilight series being made into movies(or being allowed to exist altogether) and making Eragon into a movie.

The cost is the one thing that baffles me more than anything else. I mean, at some point people will just go, "screw that" and look them up on the internet.

No Kotick, there's gameplay with story between cutscenes.

Kotick is satan. Anyone who thinks different is probably the anti-christ.

EcksTeaSea:
As long as you know I don't have to start buying my cutscenes separate from the game, no biggie for me. As for your greed Mr. Kotick, you should burn.

This. The way he worded it was that the games would no longer have cutscenes. If it was anyone else I'd brush past it and just assume they meant to simply make a movie out of it, Kotick however...

Other than that, assuming the cutscenes were beefed up properly, and a proper story was involved, this could actually be a good idea. It removes the annoying Hollywood interpretation part of the equation which normally ruins it.

And sony was itching to sell UMD films at 2X a pop...and that went over well..... if they were 10$ or cheaper it would do well and sell across genres and demographics a shame they don't want to sell across genres and demographics .....................
