El Shaddai Wows Japan With Religious Blue Jean Combat

El Shaddai is in the running for the most gorgeous videogame ever to feature a main character wearing blue jeans.

The first thing I think of when I imagine a hero going up against fallen heavenly soldiers is rarely a guy in a pair of Levis. However, that's exactly what the main character of Ignition's El Shaddai: Ascention of the Metatron wears as he battles through a game marked by gorgeous, watercolor visuals.

El Shaddai tells the tale of an average blue jean wearing human caught in war between Heaven and the Fallen Angels. He must take care of the Fallen before a flood washes over Earth, using both his bare fists and a weapon called the Arch.

It's a third-person action game also with segments of 2D platforming and exploration, and is based on the story told in the Old Testament's Book of Enoch. If El Shaddai's amazing visuals look similar to Okami's, that's because Okami lead character designer Sawaki Takeyasu is working on it.

The game recently won the Tokyo Game Show's "Future Game of the Show 2010" award, voted on by attendees and then chosen by committee, which as a new franchise is said to be quite a feat. It's been in development for four years but will hopefully be out by 2011 on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

woah that looks pretty cool.

What he said. The visuals make me happy. I'll be keeping an eye on this...

Daaaaamn. Like the visuals. Now we just need multiplayer maps procedurally generated ala Audiosurf. Imagine. Mount and Blade melee system with more refinment and emphasis on movement, and a constantly changing map based on the music. Picture the chaos.

Similar style to Mirrors Edge. I like it! :D

Yeah, that beats Space Buddha.

Now this is cool.
Who says the bible doesn't have Stories that would make great Games?

look good. I'm actually intrigued

El Shaddai meaning "God of the Breasts"?

El Shaddai means God Almighty.

I think personal boundaries may be the only thing Japan understands less than Western religions.

Dramatic violence with no apparent goal beyond domination? Sounds like western religion to me!

Putz.

This is what japanese people think all white people look like.

A: Wow, that's frikkin' beautiful!

B: Wow. Just...wow. Has that man even ever heard the word 'Bible'? Seriously, next thing I know you're going to tell me Bayonetta was about Corinthians.

dude this game looks awesome. I've been having my eye on since E3

The art style is sweet.

It does look damn purdy.

My eyes....what the hell was that......were they both really pretty men or was the one in white a girl....

Tom Goldman:
El Shaddai: Ascention of the Megatron

It's the MeTatron - the Voice of God, not the MeGatron - enemy of the Autobots. Although that would be interesting... as he gets close to the end, he gets corrupted by Dark Energon (sure, why not?) and instead becomes a giant robot? lol.

OT: The game looks pretty interesting. Fascinating art style, not too over the top combat, platforming and puzzle sequences...

I'm curious to see just how much of the Book of Enoch is incorporated and how much is added for dramatic/gameplay effect. We all know it can go badly both ways (I'm looking at you, Dante's Inferno).

Tom Goldman:
is based on the story told in the Old Testament's Book of Enoch.

What the suffrage is "The Book of Enoch"? Enoch was in the Old Testament for about ten verses.

It looks a lot more like the Book of Elijah.

Well, they do, but there is no "Book of Enoch".

Wowwww....pretty.... *Suffers multiple eyegasms*

I love the visuals, it's rare to see such beautiful graphics. I'll look out for this, the gameplay also look really nice.

well....not as a actual BOOK of the Bible but it is there.

Sure it may look nice...but is it fun?

I ask the hard, important questions.

Oh, wow. A pretty game, but featuring judeo-christian mythology from the standpoint of something *other* than a quasi-psychotic knight templar? And one of the lead artist guys was behind Okami?
...Yep, this is the game I'm going to be watching for from now on. Brink and Arkham City are going to have to wait their turn.

That looks completely uninteresting.

Because 'Levis' are a religion unto themselves.

Ok just thought I'd point out (cause I think its funny :p):
Well the main character looks flamboyantly homosexual (as well with the dude with black hair) and we get a crotch shot at 39-40 not saying this is bad just, well whoever the director orartist of the game is..well yea.
The game tho looks so god-damned awesome though! I will definitely buy this one!! :]

Okay, he's wearing blue jeans...kinda. But he's so much of a pretty-boy that I really don't care.

seems like an extremely interesting concept

Look's really interesting. But why is Megatron in this game? I never heard of a giant transforming robot was in the bible...But that would be fucking awesome.

Aye - Same here

Pretty nice art direction! Should make it somewhat intresting

This did not live up to the level of jean wearing promised in the write up...Still looks epic though.
