The indie world's darling platformer Cave Story is coming to handhelds and should show the quality DSiWare can support.

The Nintendo DSi's digital download service DSiWare might have the likes of Dragon Quest and Game & Watch on it, but it's really no XBLA when it comes to title selection. Nicalis producer Tyrone Rodriguez hopes to foster a change with the release of Cave Story on the platform.

Cave Story was originally released on the PC by a single Japanese developer who never expected it to become one of the most popular indie titles around, and a recent hit on WiiWare. After many rumors and homebrew projects that aimed to bring it to handhelds, Rodriguez has the game's DSiWare version completed and it's now in a testing phase.

Tiny Cartridge questioned Rodriguez on his motives for bringing Cave Story to DSiWare, which isn't as popular as the PlayStation Network or Xbox Live Arcade. Rodriguez doesn't think DSiWare is the problem, but the games being released on it. "If gamers and the media aren't happy with DSiWare, it isn't because the DSi isn't capable of good games, it's because of some publishers that constantly republish shitty mobile games and charge four times as much for them on DSi," he said. "Maybe games like Shantae and Cave Story will make players have something good to download on their DSi."

Though Rodriguez calls Cave Story for DSiWare "more a perfect port of the original game," it'll be improved in certain ways for its DSiWare release. A map screen has been added, which in addition to the inventory screen and dialogue boxes, will appear on the DS's lower display. Not all of the WiiWare version's additional modes can realistically be included for the DSiWare version, but those that make it are set to be announced later.

Players will be able to download the fun platforming romp through a world filled with dangerous elephants and toaster bosses "hopefully by Halloween." Rodriguez says he'll be "surprised" if Cave Story isn't released on DSiWare by the "end of the year." As for price, he says: "That's not necessarily up to us, but I'd say expect to pay a price indicative of the experience and amount of gameplay in Cave Story."

I like this guy already.

I've played through cave story twice (with and without rocket boosters) and I can say that it will be good to get this out on a mainstream level.

I love how this guy doesn't blame other stuff, it's amazing that he thinks the market constantly re-releasing games is actually hurting the industry.

Releasing old games isn't so much the problem as releasing games with no innovative elements, with no novelty to keep consumers buying games. Publishers constantly releasing $60 shovelware will kill the video game industry (eventually), as they did in 1983. Independent developers with new ideas will stave off that kind of catastrophe whether they deliver their games via DSiWare, PSN, XBox Live Arcade, or for free in some isolated corner of the internet as was the case with the Dokutsu Monogatari.

Why are you censoring "shitty"? We're all adults here, more or less. We can handle hardcore animal pornography I'm fairly sure we can handle a curse word.

ewwww... wrong site dude.

OT: This makes me sad that I don't have a DSi :(

Cave Story is free on PSP. It's free for DS too right?

PSP version is only free through homebrew. The WiiWare and DSiWare versions are the only "official" releases.

Also, supposedly they're working on an update that will fix the bugs of the WiiWare version, like the accidentally-removed bits from the new soundtrack. I'd love to hear that, as I think I'm one of the few people who liked the newer music better.

It's good to see that Cave Story is getting some mainstream recognition. I've beaten it on PC twice, and bringing such a smooth experience to WiiWare and the DS is an awesome thing.

That would be epic. Need to see more independs coming forward with there works for handhelds!

While I do like the idea of it getting more attention, I don't see myself buying a game I already have for free...

I'm glad that they are putting a lot of work into Cave Story, but there are plenty of good DSiWare games... Yes, there's a lot of junk too, but both XBLA and the PSN have their share of shovelware as well.

I absolutely love this game, so seeing it get mainstream attention really puts a smile on my face. I'll probably not get though because I've already bought the wii version.

Yay! Another Cave Story version! Too bad I can't get it.

Oh, and Tyrone? Remember how you said the WiiWare version was supposed to come out in early 2009? When was it released, hmmm?

At least someone else is calling out these people who port shitty cell phone games to DSiWare and Minis on PSN but charge crazy prices for them. If I didn't want to pay $3 for that crap on a cell phone, what makes you think I would want to pay $10 for it on my DSi or PSP/PS3?

Pretty much my thoughts.

Cave Story is a magnificent game, and the fact it was developed by 1 man over 5 years says something about it. I'm glad it's getting the recognition it deserves!
