Treyarch Has "Evolved" Zombies Since World at War

Treyarch is bringing zombies back in Call of Duty: Black Ops, but probably not the same ones seen previously in World at War.

In the past few months, zombies were all but officially confirmed to be making a return in Call of Duty: Black Ops through a retail description, recent strategy guide listing, and various other channels. Now that we can stop speculating and know they'll be included, Treyarch has revealed that the studio will likely be making zombies even cooler than they were in Call of Duty: World at War's Nazi Zombies mode.

What made this World at War mode so fun was the ability to team up with friends to just annihilate wave after wave of zombie attackers while defending an area. It also had a bit of story attached to it, though this wasn't exactly the main focus.

Treyarch recently alluded to Edge magazine that Black Ops' zombie mode will improve on World at War's, possibly with more story. "We continued to evolve [Nazi Zombies] after World At War," Treyarch head Mark Lamia said. "There was a dialogue going on with some of our hardcore community, and we were able to interact with the community and evolve. We did that with our zombie lore."

Treyarch could plan on keeping the "zombie lore" going, as Lamia looks back positively on interaction with fans. "I definitely think there's something very exciting about interacting in a live way, and being able to respond," he added.

Black Ops takes place decades later than World at War, but zombies potentially have an unlimited life expectancy and may have survived in an underground bunker somewhere, or some psycho just created brand new ones. We'll have to wait to know if they're connected or not until more information comes out on the upcoming mode in Black Ops, or until November 9 when the game is released.

Exactly how does one "evolve" zombies? I thought the whole point of a zombie was to find a way around natural selection....

In all seriousness, it sounds good, but I'll reserve judgement untill later.

Evolved as in gave them traits that aid survival?

Speedy zombies? Smart zombies?

....Oh god 0_O

Maybe Speedy and Smart zombies? Wait, I'm getting ideas here...

People want that left 4 dead money bad enough that they'll work them into real-world based warfare games?

Nazi zombies
dead rising 2
october 5th L4D2 The scarifice DLC

Too many zombies in one place

Errr...

How do zombies evolve? What will they do? Fire laser beams out of their mouths when they roar?

Perhaps they mean they will add a multitude of new features to the mode as opposed to the zombies themselves.

Alternatively, iirc there was supposedly one more nazi zombie map being made and is to be released, so maybe that map will have a little of a explanation.

Although I'm not sure if development is still happening with that map.

Maybe new creatures, like how Shi No Numa introduced Hellhounds.
Zombies that randomly fire off shots from pistols?
Maybe there will be zombie variations like what Left 4 Dead did

Are we talking like left 4 dead evolved zombies? Or just evolved AI.

I hope when they say more story they don't mean they've made a zombie campaign or something...
The thing that made zombies so fun was starting from the beginning and just killing wave after wave - not a detailed story map or progression...

We'll have to wait for exactly what they mean by evolved but as of now, this sounds good.

Still not too excited it's Treyarch and not Infinity Ward, but oh well. Every dog has his day.

I loved the original Nazi Zombies. It made me buy the map packs, and actually play WaW more then a little

Soooo sick of all the zombie crap, at this point the people who buy the shit are like some kind of metaphoric symbol for what they are purchasing, mindlessly buying every new zombie whatever that happens.

I believe that when they refer to evolving zombies, I'm almost positive they mean the game mode in and of itself, rather than the actual zombies.

Maybe they'll learn to speak, and instead of you shooting them and them trying to kill you, we can have a chat and all live in harmony!

.....Till one smacks us and gets a PTRS bullet through the face.

They'd basically be ordinary people who happen to be dead.

Zombie ninjas?

thats why its now Al-Qaeda Werewolf Zombies that fire lazors out of their mouths when they roar. The first level takes place in a mall with a photographer that has covered wars before and his army of plants that are surprisingly suited for combat applications, the game type follows a storyline where you learn that Poncho Inc. crated the zombies in a freak accident involving science.

and yes, crated, as in they are in crates.........

ITS 100% ORIGINAL, WE SWEAR!

OT: I really hope its more than just slow zombies or fast zombies now, lets see some with riot shields or heavy armor or some with suicide vests that can take out the entire team if they get too close.

also, bring back the teddy bear:

I never knew anyone really cared about the stories of zombies.I thought that it was about how Zombies=bad Bullet=good Bullet>zombie. This should be interesting though.

That's pretty cool.

On topic, I think they made them better zombies. Or as I like to say

Harder,better,faster,stronger!

Will all versions have zombies? I heard only console special editions will have zombies.

Hopefully they mean the actual gameplay mode. Got so bored of it just being stuck in a room with zombies coming through the windows. Perhaps a bigger map with running room.

That... and since its modern warfare... that means some zombies might have night/thermal vision goggles.

...are you thinking what I'm thinking?

ZOMBIE BRAWL! They're undead and they're pissed!

Also, where's the zombies I can blast apart and still have come at me?

They are probably going to make some more zombie variations. In WOW, all we had were normal and crab zombies plus the hellhounds.

Maybe we'll have zombie soldiers with body armor or big zombies(like the left 4 dead tank)

I'll give it a couple of years before we see 'Call of Duty: World War Z'...

In my opinion Treyarch should only make zombie games. They'd be awesome at it to say the least, where-as their campaign levels and on-line play are some what lacking. I only play W.A.W. for the zombies, and I know I'm not alone.

No offense, but I prefer Nazi Zombie to left 4 dead, cause Nazi Zombie actually had a survival feel, you know, like you were making a final stand.

I want Commie Zombies! Maybe not as cool or appropriate as Nazi Zombies, but still awesome.

Also, confirmation of zombie mode may make Black Ops higher on my list than Reach. Not to mention even more of my friends seem to be getting it!

I just did a forum topic last night asking people what they liked about the Zombie storyline. You are correct, however, in assuming that no one cared, in that only five people bothered to post, and none of them posted anything along the lines of what I asked. Apparently I am alone.

On Topic: I would LOVE to see them continue the storyline in the next game. Awesomeness awaits!! "Oh man, Nikolie is AWESOME!" The drunk Russian speaks the truth.

Nah before we knew it was black ops and thought it was set in 'Nam me and my mate were hoping for VIETNAMESE VAMPIRES

As long as its fun, and me and my friends can have fun running around taking out the undeade...a little change isnt bad

Now I can't help but think of Dr Mcninja....

Seriously though, zombie ninjas would be badddd for humanity (or the player).

But it would be AWESOME.
