Fez Not Hanging Up Hat, Coming to Xbox Live in 2011

Fez Not Hanging Up Hat, Coming to Xbox Live in 2011

Fez may have been delayed a year from original release projections, but a new gameplay trailer proves it still has life.

Phil Fish and the Polytron Corporation's Fez was once expected to come out in 2010 on Xbox Live Arcade, but development has taken longer than expected and it was pushed to 2011. For those that think the unique platformer was never going to make it out alive, don't, because a new gameplay trailer has just been released.

But as for a concrete release date, it still isn't available. Take heart in the fact that Fez keeps on looking better and better and should provide a new platforming experience next year.

Fez is best described as a 2D game that's really 3D, but only played in 2D. If that explanation was confusing, watch the trailer. Players move along a 2D plane, but can rotate the environment to completely change obstacles they're facing or to discover hidden objects.

For example, if main character Gomez is facing a jump he won't be able to bound across, you can rotate the environment and watch it disappear to continue on your way. It's an interesting mechanic, aligning Fez with other popular Xbox Live Arcade independent titles like Braid.

I don't know exactly what's going on in the trailer here, but it involves opening up treasure chests which is one of my favorite activities. I know it uses graphics of a retro nature, but damn, it has a gorgeous style too. Polytron says that the game has been in the works since 1996 in some form, and hopes to release Fez before its 16th development anniversary.

That actually looks really awesome. I don't think i've seen any other game with such an interesting mechanic.

Really impressive visuals.

I see what you did there.

Tom likes Fez. He think Fez is cool.

The third Paper Mario game actually used a similar mechanic, though it wasn't quite as in-depth as this one seems to be.

OT: It looks really cool! I dig the retro look too. Can't wait to see it finished.

Dammit, ninja'd. But this still looks like quite a good game. Is it now or will it be on Steam?

Originally it was going to be for PC, but I think Fish got some money from M$ and made it XBLA exlcusive. IIRC, hopefully I'm wrong. But it doesn't matter to me now that I have an Xbox360.

Now that's beautiful although I still won't have an Xbox :(.

It looks quite similar to the gameplay used in Super Paper Mario, but with a lot more depth.
It seems quite fun, I hope this is coming to Steam as well.

nifty. Here's hoping for a Steam release.

Wait a second...it's been in development since 1996...

Fez has been in development LONGER then Duke Nukem Forever.

I remember hearing about this ages ago, it's come a long way.

Also, that game has some impressive level design to accommodate such a feature.

Fez's are still cool though.

The mechanic reminds me a little of Crush, although I never actually played Crush, so I can't really say how well it works. Still, Fez looks pretty cool. Hell, Fez's are just generally cool.

And also Echochrome had something like this mechanic too.

OT: Intresting gameplay, nice graphics, be worth it to keep a look out for, though I hope it doesn't have a massive price tag.

Am I the only one wondering how long it will be before the world tires of the onslaught of artsy indie platformers? I mean, it looks like an interesting game, but it just seems like the majority of indie developers these days just make arty indie platformers.

That video blew my mind...

I'll give the trial a whirl.

Glad to see its still kicking around! Thats fantastic! Wanna give it a hsot when it does grace our shores

Oh, it's a game! I thought this news was about fezes being added to the Xbox Live avatar creator thing.
I don't own a Xbox so I won't get it, but it looks nice though I get the feeling I have seen something very similar before.

Looks good. Gameplay trailer made me go "Woah." multiple times.

I have no doubt. It's just funny.
