Upskirt Danger Caused Sex Change in Ico's The Last Guardian

image

The Last Guardian originally starred a female character until the designers realized that much of the game involved camera shots from below.

In The Last Guardian, the player will control a young boy who befriends a giant creature called the Trico. Lead designer Fumito Ueda revealed that he originally wrote the story with an adolescent girl in mind, but was forced to change the sex of his main character when he realized that much of the view would be from below. And young girls wear a lot of skirts...

"The Trico is a very powerful creature," Ueda said. "If we'd had a beefed-up, powerful hero, it would have thrown off the balance a little bit, so the design naturally drove me to create an adolescent female character who was light on her feet.

"But in the end I decided a boy would have a little more grip to climb the Trico. Another problem is that girls tend to wear skirts, and The Last Guardian features a lot of climbing..."

Luckily, the PS3 exclusive from the creators of Shadow of the Colossus isn't due out until the end of 2011 so Ueda has had time to make the sex change.

Of course, it begs the question as to why a Japanese developer making games for a Japanese-centric console would be so worried about upskirt shots, but I suppose Ueda has the international market to consider. Also, how about just putting the lady in pants? Seems like a much easier fix than scrapping the female character altogether.

Just saying.

Agreed with the putting her in pants idea, besides for climbing it seems a bit more practical to wear pants instead of a skirt when climbing things.

Games need more female protagonists! I demand a lady in pants!
...Wow, I really just wrote that...

I would have much rather seen a female char, put her in damn pants or something

I agree with the last part of the article. If they wanted a female main character that badly, all they needed to do was switch it from a skirt to pants. Simple as that. If they say that if its a female main that she would need a skirt, then team ico has problems.

Makes...sense I guess. Like you said I would have just given her pants.

Pants seem more than alright, but we have to consider the amount of women in this man's games that we've seen with some sort of pants.

...

That's right.

So if this guy prefers to have a guy than a girl wearing pants, then so be it. He's pretty awesome for it. How many Japanese developers stop and say "...I don't want my female to have upskirt issues. At all."? I wonder if there's any other developer this awesome. [/fanboyism]

Or have her wear tights underneath the skirt or something. There's lots of workarounds.

It seems to me this decisin was made quite early in development since I was first made aware of this game about a year ago and the screen shots showed a male protagonist then.

Can't you all see?! Putting a female lead in pants would have been submitting to the male-chauvinist agenda!

ib4genuinefeministsgetallhuffy.

2 things:

- Since when did the Japanese worry about upskirts?

- Lara Croft wore pants and people still oggled her backside - of course, she jumped, swam and made grunting noises when she climbed, so that probably 'helped'.

Isn't this news pretty damn old?

Maybe the gryphon is female?

Then again, it's not wearing pants... Or a skirt for that matter.

What ?

Greg Tito:
Another problem is that girls tend to wear skirts, and The Last Guardian features a lot of climbing...

So girls can never wear trousers ?
And why not just have pants, or just not have the camera going up her skirt, instead we get to look at a schlong instead, okay i might have exaggerated a bit there.

women in japan dont wear pants or something?

Yeah so I too thought "What is wrong with pants?"

I guess the only one who didn't is Fumito Ueda.

Skirts with leggings maybe? Or just a tunic that creates a skirt-esque look with some trousers on underneath?

Can't be that difficult guys.

well what do you expect from Japan? the same country that mass-markets games like Dead or Alive Extreme Beach Volleyball?

or the same country that developed jiggle physics?

seriously, no common sense and a GREAT lack of equality in that country...

Congratulations, you have now left the Twilight Zone...
What? It was stuck in the 1950's so... look... do your remember any women in pants on that show? No? Didn't think so.

OT:
Yeah... a little girl in pants sounds more practical than a skirt for lots of climbing... I mean... unless there were some story reason why she had to wear a skirt I don't see why she couldn't just wear pants.

Lol this is hilarious and wrong in so many ways.

How about puffy pantaloons? Those are pretty feminine.

Really a very weird decision. The cause of upskirt shots are skirts, not women. Go watch one of those 1960's Hercules movies to prove that.

How about having a boy wearing a kilt? Would that solve anything?

Isn't the little boy wearing a toga? aren't they worried people will look up HIS skirt? and if so, back to square one, then!

I think it would be easier to climb in shorts, rather than pants.

Wow. Why the hell would she even try climbing in a shirt? I mean, come on.

I'm glad he changed it to a boy. I don't mind a girl as a protagonist, but the whole story fits much more nicely around a boy and his beast. I mean, that's a pretty old theme that goes way back with books like The Neverending story and fables and all that. The Pokemon creator said it best. Boys around that age are all about adventure, exploring the world and animals.

Then again, I don't think it really would have mattered. If you look at Spirited Away, Ghibly was able to completely nail a story that would have been traditionally more associated with a young male lead. Yeah, the gender wouldn't have mattered, aslong as it wasn't a huge shiny warrior riding that Griffon.

Can't wait for the game :D.

...or maybe because she would have been an underage girl and Ueda isn't sick.

Yeah, good point.

That sound you hear is my head repeatedly striking my desk over the huge amounts of sexism depicted by Fumito Ueda. First he wants a weak hero to counterbalance the strength of the creature in the game. So naturally he things of a girl. Because you know. Women are all weak, soft creatures who can never on their own be strong, independent and kick butt on their own. y'know, despite all the strong, female, independent kick butt characters in games, media and real life.

And naturally, if we have a girl character, she'll wear a skirt. Because all girls wear skirts, always. You'll never see a girl wearing pants while clinging to a monster or fighting. Besides, boys have a stronger grip.

Dear Mister Ueda. Kindly pull your head out of your ass and join us in the 21st century, where women are equals and wear pants. Thanks.

I'm disappointed they didn't just put her in pants. Games need more female protagonists. I'm sure the game will be great regardless, but it would have been a nice change of pace to have a young girl as a lead character.

Women in Japan don't generally wear pants, and little girls especially don't. It's not a matter of chauvinism or anything, it's simply the way their culture is. It wouldn't even think to most Japanese people to question is, in their minds it's no different from men not wearing skirts.

See, this is a culture that understands something that the US frequently seems to miss: it's okay for genders to be DIFFERENT, and that doesn't automatically make them unequal in some way.

P.S. Thanks

Put the boy in a skirt. Problem solved.

i agree with the last part pants would have been a easy change

It's really weird considering all the asian MMOs always include a young looking girls in sailor skirts with full upskirts whenever you cast a spell (and don't even mention Lineage 2 dwarf girls...)

Yeah, but if that happened gamers may accuse them of relying on fanservice. *shrug*

hey japan, I'm going to send you this new piece of clothing called pants, it's the latest craze here and everyone wears them instead of short revealing skirts

Azaraxzealot:

For some reason I suddenly want House of th-...no, Typing of the Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball. No pants necessary for that one. And as a result, I have the PvZ song stuck in my head with alternate lyrics: "There are zombies in my pr0n; we don't zombies in our pr0n!"

...I'll get me coat.

PipBoy2000:

Of course not physical sexual harassment would be far too difficult if they did.

Not really, I;m going to go ahead and agree with that one guy who said the cultural difference thing.
