Nolan Puts Official Title on Third Batman Flick

image

The third movie in the modern Christopher Nolan Batman franchise has been titled, and a prominent villain ruled out of it.

Since Christopher Nolan has been at the helm of the Batman movies, his Batman has already begun and successfully returned as a dark knight. In the upcoming third Nolan Batman film, the dark knight is going to rise.

Nolan revealed to the LA Times that his next movie will be called The Dark Knight Rises. He and his brother Jonah have written a script which is based on a story conceptualized by Nolan and David Goyer.

The Riddler has been thrown around as the logical next choice for a villain after the Joker, who definitely won't be back, but Nolan also shot down the hopes of green, question-mark adorned clothing fans. He confirmed that the Riddler won't be in The Dark Knight Rises, but gave absolutely no hint about any deviants that would.

It's rumored that Catwoman will make an appearance, but this is unconfirmed. The Joker was what made The Dark Knight stand head and shoulders above Batman Begins for me, so I'm wondering what kind of antagonist can reach the same level, or even close to it, in Rises.

Nolan did say: "We'll use many of the same characters as we have all along, and we'll be introducing some new ones." Really, if it's not going to be the Riddler, it has to be the Penguin. He might have a cute name, but Nolan could easily take the character to a dark place as Tim Burton did in Batman Returns. Edit: I've been reminded that the Penguin has already been ruled out. Woe is me.

Thanks for the tip Frank_Sinatra_!

Surely it must be the Penguin. Yes! :D

I wonder if I will prefer Nolan's Penguin or Burgess Meredith's.
Tough choice...

So does this mean no Leonardo DiCaprio? Because I want mah Leonardo DiCaprio!

Definitely looking forward to The Dark Knight Rises. Good choice for a name.

Note how this thread says "it has to be the Penguin" yet the "won't be back" link has Nolan expressly stating the Penguin will NOT be the villian

The title sounds about right.

And the penguin could certainly be.. interesting. I really don't want another Catwoman for this one, she just really isn't all that interesting storywise save her looks.

Wait- what!?

*checks*

Oh noes! :O

The Dark Knight Rises?

Not bad, but not great, either. I would love to see The Penguin, The Riddler, Bane, Mr. Freeze or Clock King.

Now, I should probably clarify what I mean by "I'd love to see Clock King." I'm talking about the Clock King that knows that he'll have beaten you unconscious two seconds after you finish reading this sentence. The Clock King who knows that the burglar alarm will go off four seconds after he enters the vault at 3:28 PM, that it will take nine minutes for the police to arrive on the scene, the train's doors will open at 3:37, boarding will begin at 3:40, and has the route planned out so that he's on the train at exactly 3:43:25 PM and comfortably sipping tea when the train leaves the station at 3:45. THAT is what I consider the incarnation of the Clock King; a master strategist who can formulate where to be and what he should be doing at a given time down to the millisecond, the genius who knows that you had dinner at 6:44 PM last Tuesday, that you took a 12-minute thirty-nine-second shower and went to bed at 9:17:22 and that exactly 24 minutes after you go to bed the cyanide pill that he slipped into the steak your wife bought and you ate for dinner will take effect. Now doesn't that sound like an intellect to stack up against Batman?

I expect Hush, Bane, or maybe even Black Mask.

Good, I couldn't really see the Penguin working, anyway, to be honest. I dunno who else Nolan could use now he's ruled out the Riddler, though.

the dark knight rises...

batman begins 2?

can't complain, I'll be camping the cinema more than a 12 yrs old in MW2

What a terrible goddamn title choice. I guess that, with the allure of another billion-dollar box office take, they just had to make sure that the brand connection between this and the Dark Knight punched you in the dick.

Can't say I blame them, but it's a terrible goddamn title.

So Batman falls? And rises? Black Mask would be cool as a villain.

Maybe Batman becomes an alcoholic and he has to battle himself and his inner demons

I was hoping for Caped Crusader. Just keep going on down all the names of Batman until things get inevitably silly again and then they can use all the names Joker and Penguin have come up with.
Well with Chris Nolan still on board for this I has my hopes still.

Leo can pull off a lot of different Batman villains. Mad Hatter, Penguin, Riddler, the list goes on. So don't lose hope that he won't be in this next.
As for Catwoman it would be cool if we were to get introduced to Selina Kyle as a love interest, and at the end find out she has been running a double life to bring up in the next movie.

Harley Quinn looking for vengeance?

I'm crossing my fingers for Calendar Man.

Twoface, clearly. The setup for his appearance was so blatantly obvious in Dark Knight, that i'm surprised there is such speculation at all. It also fits with the claim, that some characters will return.

aww, shame can't be Riddler, loved it when Jim Carrey was the riddler he was awesome.

Hmm, I'll be totally honest, I don't know many Batman villains, but Killer Croc would be a interesting choice.

Maybe show some of his childhood and how it started, I read his Bio in Arkham Asylum, but would be awesome on film.

This has already been covered.

I know, A mod ninja'd, I never thought I'd see the day.

Honestly, please not Catwoman. No one give a flying fuck about Catwoman. Even though the link says no Penguin, I think Anthony Hopkins would be great in the role. I'd love to see Killer Croc but he's to unrealistic for Nolan's Batman. Hm... Zasz, the Calender Man, or Poison Ivy might be possible.

Nolan also shot down the hopes of green, question-mark adorned clothing fans

Aaww...
I figured he fitted right in with the other villains he's been using, who are all the kind with gimmicks and intelligence rather than superpowers

At first I thought this was about Nolan North.

I dig the title, still betting on Zsasz, Hush, or Hugo Strange to be the villain. Maybe a little Catwoman thrown in for good measure

I want Mr Freeze as a villain.

And I want him to be played by Schwarzenegger!

Sampler:
Harley Quinn looking for vengeance?

That would actually be pretty cool. Say Harley was a mental patient who was working for the Joker and wants to continue his legacy. Or like they said in Arkham Asylum, that she was The Joker's therapist who fell in love with him. There's a myriad of ways Nolan could work Harley Quinn into the story.

Catwoman would be cool. No Joker probably means no Harleen Quinzel, though ten to one says Crane shows up again. Zasz is a possible minor villain, and Clayface seems a bit too soft-science for the series, but I'm kind of hoping for Killer Croc or Bane. And it's not like The Riddler can't show up, seeing as we are talking about Hollywood, here, the place that will flat out tell us they aren't doing something only to announce just that a few ticks later, as if we are children asking about our Xmas presents.

Iron Man syndrome?

Not a bad name. Of course, not great either. I understand what the effect is; it just feels a little lazy that he added one word to The Dark Knight.
We've had so far:
Batman Begins
Batman; The Dark Knight
Why not have something like:
Batman: Ascension

Actually, that sounds pretty good. (I'm coining it! Ha, now no one in the world can say ascension without being fined by me! I truly have the edge over everyone! ;)

The penguin never seemed to be terribly menacing in the comics I read. More of an eccentric arms dealer than super villain. Sort of like Quark on Deep Space Nine, but without the bar.

What about Poison Ivy? or Bane? While the Clooney movie ruined all of those characters, in the comics they were pretty cool. Bane, for example, wasn't the mindless hulk he was in the Clooney movie.

I was hoping for a better title. Something like the "the caped crusade". Basically, a variation of one of Batman's nicknames, as opposed to reusing an existing title. Dark Knight Rises is barely better than Batman Returns.

Eh, my problem with the Nolan series of Batman films is that they'd seem a bit too grounded in the "real" which somewhat shrinks the list of villains from the dozens available to those that could fit (if somewhat loosely) in the real world.

Which also means my favorite; Killer Croc, will not be showing up, ever.

...Except that he's dead?

...wow, could be an amazing film, of that I have no doubts. But The Dark Knight Rises? seriously? First we get Batman Begins, then we get The Dark Knight, now this? surely some other redemption-themed Batman-related title that is a bit more... unexpected and original?

Oh look, someone else said it...

Anyway, at least we can guess that Batman makes his return from outlaw fugitive to hero of Gotham... but given the tone of the Nolan films, we can expect the usual dark grittiness.

I'm putting a tenner on it right now, Bruce, over the course of the third film, will be forced to accept that Gotham will always need Batman, that he will never be able to inspire the people in the way that he wanted and that this burden he chose to bear until he could stir the populace is going to be a permanent one, that the weight on his shoulders will stay there forever because at this point, if he drops the load, then it will come crashing down on Gotham and it's people, leaving the city as bad, if not worse, than it was before.

I think for this one a cavalcade of minor villians, would do the trick (if it follows the plan I think it will). Faced will all these freaks, Bruce starts breaking down. The film doesn't focus on any specific villian, but instead focuses more of it's attention on Bruce's reaction to it, a realistic depiction of how one man may feel or act when faced with these nutjobs knowing full well that they will keep on coming, with no-one else to stop them.

BAM! Shot down in flames...

Except this is Nolan's last Batman movie for the foreseeable future so I can't imagine he'll leave plot threads just dangling there at the end of the film, or do you suppose he'll leave a legacy for whatever director Legendary/WB drafts in to milk the franchise?

Well Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn are friends of a sort..some of the time, but it would be interesting to see the Penguin, Bane, Mad Hatter in action.
Bat Woman could be on the scene but probably not
