DC's Raven to Replace Smallville With a Series of Her Own

DC's Raven to Replace Smallville With a Series of Her Own

With Smallville coming to a close, The CW network is looking to fill the void with a series based on another DC character.

This is Smallville's tenth and final season, and airing network The CW is readying another comic book series as its replacement. Variety reports that the network is looking to air a series about the half-human, half-demon Raven, a 1980s era DC comics creation who boasts the ability to both teleport and read other's emotions. Diego Gutierrez (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, V) is set to write and executive produce, and the CW is teaming up with Warner Bros. TV and DC Entertainment on the project.

This wouldn't be empath Rachel Roth's first tenure at The CW, as she joined Robin, Starfire, and Beast Boy on the animated Teen Titans. The program ran for five seasons, and is now airing in syndication on the Boomerang channel. The CW was also the home of the 2002 live-action DC series Birds of Prey, but that show failed to find an audience, and was canceled after one season.

Besides Birds of Prey, The CW has tried to capture the Smallville lightning before. Variety recalls "the last time The CW looked to adapt a DC Comics character, it turned to Robin. In 2008, the netlet gave a commitment to The Graysons, which was to follow the world of Dick "DJ" Grayson before he took on the iconic Robin identity and aligned himself with Batman," but the series was axed "after Warner Bros. Pictures Group prexy Jeff Robinov decided he didn't want the series to run simultaneous with Christopher Nolan's Batman movie franchise."

Oh, awesome! Please make this work. Raven is a great character, but like everyone else, if placed in the wrong hands, she's going to come out a mess.

I just hope Starfire makes an appearance.

She has a body that just won't stop

I wonder who could play her?

Angelina Jolie has the look for Starfire, unfortunately she might be just a little too old to make in convincing.

Raven's one of my favourites, I'd love if this worked, but I have a horrible suspicion they're just hoping to make it dark and angsty and cash in on the tween crowd. While she's supposed to be dark and angsty if it's not done delicately it will look like tripe.

Actual:

Unless there was a "Adult Titans"... Then again, that just sounds like a bad porno.

Sweet.

I remember watching Teen Titans, great show. :D

Oh, that'd be kickass. I love Raven.

two words about this....."Bad Idea"

Three words about this..."Puffy Ami Yumi"

And Raven? I don't do fear.

Even if she is voiced by the wonderful Tara Strong.

How about 'Titans'? Everyone is grown up and, Grayson is Nightwing.

OT: I'll give the show a chance. I liked Birds of Prey but that didn't stop it from tanking.

I can't see it.

I mean, yeah, Raven has a LOT of baggage, but she's better as a plot device or member of a team than a standalone character.

Plus, this is CW so you know there's going to be some emo/scene with a human mother trying to hide the fact she's the bloody boobed anti-christ.

Then again, 'Lucy - Daughter of the Devil', was pretty fun...so who knows.

I sense horrible angsty television incoming...really depends on who makes it though.

The Graysons would have been the most boring show ever, not getting into a whole load of details DICK WAS LIKE 9 WHEN HE BECAME ROBIN! And no you can't make a narrative out of that, the Robins were all trained young, I think they DC simply realized that a show like that would never work.

I mean Smallville? sure I can buy that, Superboy after all. All I know is if your running a Raven TV series while there's a Blue Beetle series running on I have one thing to say

Jaime's got my vote.

Actually, considering the plot of the average Smallville episode, Raven is a far more natural choice for the writers. Clark Kent seems to get in yet another completely bizarre and depressing adventure constantly. Having your relatives turn out to be the coming apocalypse is, like, every third episode. There's a little nagging voice in your head thinking, "what the hell - I didn't know Superman was so flippin' emo." For Raven, however, no problem, these kinds of happenings are business as usual.

Blind Sight:

It would indeed depend on who gets the helm of this show. Raven is angsty for a number of reasons, but since Supernatural has been such a success, there should be little issue with conveying the demonic parts of Raven's story.

That said, I'm not so sure this show idea would work. Raven's had a few flips to evil through the years, and been part of a few superhero teams as well, but if this show does become real, I hope they keep those plots in mind.

I really don't think this show will work. Raven isn't a character that can carry a show well on her own:

For one, she's borderline alien. Her father is a demon, she was raised by Monks. She'd be clueless in the sure to be modern setting they're going to put her in. Which means they're going to hackjob her origins and make her a normal gothy teenaged girl with omg problemz

Completly missing the fucking point of the character, a mature and serene young girl who cannot allow herself to have feelings or she might obliterate everyone around her.

And you expect anything different from the CW? They hackjob everything for the "pretty white kids with problems" demographic. I might check it out, if only for the fact that Raven is one of three DC characters I actually like. But I'm not expecting anything incredible.

wow did not know the character was that old. Thought they were new stuff when i watched Teen Titans. XD Then i saw Cyborg in the New DCUO trailer and i was like "omg look at that!" XD

Love it when i learn something new :D

Cyborg was in Superfriends, right before it finally died.

He had hair.

I think the Raven character could be interesting and compelling. I know her best from the Teen Titans cartoon, but other comic-guys I know think she can be interesting too.

So I'll throw it out: Who would be better? And why? Remember, we're trying to make a successful TV show here, so we need viewers, other than you.

He had an AFRO no less.

Teen Titans was an incredibly rare occurance of an old property getting renewed life. It followed the basic template of the Teen Titan comics which were OOOHH SOOO EIGHTIES/NINTIES, but made it...not... oh so eighties/ninties. And it was good.

I was way out of that cartoons age range and I thought it was good. I especially loved the Cartoon reimagining of Starfire and Raven, and those are the default personalities/voices for them in my head now.

For a CW show? As much as I'd hate to propogate the countinued existance of the CW and it's souless void of television...

Green Arrow is pretty popular based off his appearances in Smallville. Green Arrow has always been a more 'fun' batman, the kind of person whose rich and enjoys it, loves the ladies, and is a smartass. Bring in Black Canary, good times.

But if we're doing Batman expies, why not do the big man himself, and give Bruce Wayne the Smallville treatment? Call it Gotham, make it about the events of Bruce's life - which have been covered in comics just as much as supermans, and are far more interesting - before he becomes and leading up to Batman. Bonus, Bruce activly worked as a vigilante before he became Batman, so shit -ACTUALLY HAPPENED-. The only negative here is many of Bruce's rogues are completly hingent on him BEING Batman, but the Joker could make an appearance as his pre-Jokerized mafia heavy/crazy self, Copplepot as a corrupt businessman/mob boss, etc etc.

Smallville is an incredibly stupid and inane show, but it was popular. And while i'd hate to see Batman reduced to something like 'the blur', it has legs.

Oh, what about a Flash show? They did a live action once, the effects aren't that hard. 6 million dollar man it with some flashier CGI. People would love you for a 'The Flash' show. Fun guy, works as a forensics expert, etc etc.

Why not a show about Zatanna? It could be like Supernatural, with a hot chick as lead. Jason Blood could guest star, they could have the romance subplot I always imagined them having before Etrigan ruined it somehow.

Basically...ANYONE but Raven? Raven is ONLY coming up because someone said hey, kids liked that Raven girl from that cartoon we cancelled because it was too good. Lets exploit THAT in a hamfisted manner and get all the self conscious teenaged girls to identify with the character thats entirely different from them.

kinda makes u wonder if DC ever invents new characters now. or they just bring up yee olde characters lol

I would like to see a Beast Boy show, only saw him in Teen Titans and he was my favourite character along side Cyborg.

You're dealing with the CW here. Think Dawson's Creek and Buffy and you'll understand a little better. And Raven is the most marketable character of the ones you mention. Except for Flash, but he had a show and it bombed. Also CW isn't going to be ruining Batman. Chris Nolan is already doing a good job of that by turning him into Sam Spade. Like I said before, I don't expect anything good to come out of this concept, but I'm compelled to look and see what they do with it out of morbid curiosity.

That and I hate Superman.

I'll watch the first episode. If it doesn't hook me then, too bad. I really dig Raven as a character.

It will do about as well as "Birds of prey".

NOW if the did a show based on POWER GIRL...

The ratings would be huge!

I only clicked this because I used to watch teen titans, anyway I liked raven, being half demon leads to entertaining possibilites, like yourfather taking over the world and killing everything.
Dont watch smallville though.
Also since im not the only one who watched teen titans not to drag the topic off, but was the show cancelled or something, I remember slade and tera being turned to stone, then it just sort of stopped, slade vanished and then they just put old episodes back on.

TsunamiWombat:

I agree, but every once and a while there's an episode that reminds you of why it's one of the very few truly great shows still on TV these days. You get 3 or 4 crappy filler episodes with preposterous story lines, but then along comes a gem that really is a joy to watch.

Hell, I'd watch it. Thing is, which actress would have the 'talents' to do it?

I predict emo whineyness for this Raven show. I mean, Smallvile was full of it, and Raven will no doubt be the same if not worse.
