Visceral Proves Your Mom Hates Dead Space 2

Visceral Games performed a focus test for Dead Space 2 using subjects not typically in its demographic: Moms.

Gamers familiar with the horror and shooter genres would probably have a pretty standard reaction to Dead Space 2. Visceral Games decided to take a look at what another sect of humanity thought of the game, just to get an idea of its broadened appeal. Apparently, "mothers" are not big fans.

At first I thought the focus test was a joke featuring actors, but I seem to be mistaken. Visceral Games really did subject over 200 moms from the "heart of conservative America" to scenes from Dead Space 2, and it went about as well as anyone could have expected.

The "most action-packed, violent, and disturbing" footage Dead Space 2 has to offer made many of the mothers jump in terror. "That is awful," one woman said. Another appeared to be posessed, saying: "Do you want to have fun... killing somebody?" While I think a couple of the moms enjoyed the footage, most of them said it broke their hearts, while one acknowledged: "I don't understand what's coming out of their mouth," speaking of the game's demonic vomit.

The strongest reaction to Dead Space 2 was from a woman that called the game a "dangerous, mind-numbing, mind-altering weapon." I wouldn't go that far, but it is a pretty scary game.

You'll be able to make your own mother think you're a possessed devil worshipper when Dead Space 2 is released for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 on January 25, 2011.

Goddamn, I love Visceral.

Lol great. My mum can just about manage Bejweled. I wonder what she'd think of this.

Good thing my mom wasn't in that group. She would have thrown off the curve

It seems that Visceral decided to keep the Dante's Inferno marketing team around. I approve of this.

LOL this was really funny XD

The EA team sure knows how to market games, but not so much in making them good...just mediocre.

Mother Tested, Mother Disapproved. I think we all win.

Methinks that if you're marketing a Mature game meant to be played by adults, your target audience wouldn't give two shits if their moms approve or not.

Nice try anyway, Visceral. I'll be getting this regardless.

Best. Ad. Campaign. Ever.

Seriously, they took the very thing that most would use AGAINST video games, and used it to their advantage. Brilliant.

That's a pretty awesome way to advertise. But it was probably fake.

Hmm...
Nice little "fuck you" to groups like the PTC.

OK, that was pretty brilliant.

I was already going to get this (I absolutely loved the original Dead Space), but this just cemented the purchase.

Am I the only one who would feel immature playing this game now? Like I'm just doing it to spite my parents? It makes me feel like some preteen who tries to be edgy just to get a rise out of people.

God If only call of duty did this with blops, there might be less squeaking on my mic in TDM. I wonder if they had done the research far enough to see if they would have bought this game for their child beforehand, maybe there is some kind of misconception seemingly a lot of parents have with what M rated games are full of.

A dangerous reminder of the power that "mom's" have (looking at you Rosie Donnel).

My mum doesn't like Dead Space? Hang on a second...

*Dials Phone*

Mum. I heard that... Yes I know what time it is... I heard that you don't like Dead Space... don't try and deny it I read it online... Be that as it may I won't be coming over for dinner next weekend. Goodbye.

EDIT: They should have done the same thing with long time Nintendo fans and Metroid: Other M.

To be fair I think a large part of the target demographic is twelve year olds who revel in the notion of rebellion, but ironically need their mum to by the game.

Duh... "2000 Dead Space gamers were brought together and made do cooking, washing dishes and cleaning the house! They absolutely hated it! Go do your chores... and enjoy it!"

I think this was a joke, and a damn good one at that.

What the hell was the point of that?!

Seriously... couldn't they have done something better than prove that mothers don't like bloody horror games?

I don't understand. "Your mother hates Dead Space" is good advertising? What are you, a rebellious fourteen year old?

I think you are right on both counts, both a joke and a damn good one at that.

I laughed my ass off watching that, hilarious video.

Wonderful marketing EA! *Claps.

I tried the demo and it convinced me to buy the full game.
Why? Because you get a friggin jetpack

My mum has no right to stop me

"yourmomhatesthis.com" <= clever, EA, very clever! ;)

It's called marketing. People buy games because of it.

OT: Mah mumma sez dem shooter games are the devil so i stay far away from those, uh-huh.

I think it's great advertising because it would WORK on rebellious fourteen year olds.

Thanks for the insult by the way. Entirely necessary to get your point across.

These guys...are possibly the greatest trolls I have ever seen...except Valve.

I think this advertising was awful. It didn't make the game look any better or good at all. It made me feel like it was appealing to kids. Like it was saying "Hey kid, your mom doesn't want you to play it." and kids eat that crap up.

As an adult, I thought it was stupid and playing the stereotype we hate here, that video games are uber violent things for children. Awful. I don't get why everyone here is championing it. When I saw it on TV yesterday, I got kinda sad.

I dont think this has been brought up so far, but i think the tested mothers were unaware of the difference between 'shooter' and 'survival horror'. Even in Dead Space the difference is quite clear.

Still way to make an advert that absolutely appeals to a rebellious teenager. I was already reading up on this years Darwin Awards and this actually made me laugh harder.

EDIT-
Most of us on the internet are very desensitised to violence, gore, porn and Rule 34 porn those who arent are transitioning to that state right now, even if they dont realise it.
Mothers only skim the shallows of the net in places like Youtube, facebook, news sites and Wikipedia. They would never normally see this kind of thing.

Yeah, my mom will hate it. She hates scary things. Does she care that I play it? Not one damn bit.

They tested out people's mothers? There's a joke there...

Thank you! This is NOT! good advertising for video games, especially when the Supreme Court is deciding on video games. This is just showing to the world that gamers are people who are unstable and using games as a "dangerous, mind-numbing, mind-altering weapon."

It may hit the target audience of gamers...but it will also hit the general public and make them think even worse of gaming and the people who play them.

When my mom saw me playing Dead Space she asked me if the poor disfigured people in the game could be cured of their terrible condition, rather than being shot. I was left speechless. My mom is awesome.

The games' an 18. If you're old enough to play it, you're old enough not to need your mother's approval to do so. I'm glad that the subjects now know to stop little Johnny playing Black Ops, but if they expect that to sell the game, their target audience clearly aren't old enough to play the damn thing.
