Real-Life New Vegas Ranger Armor is Totally Post-Nuclear Chic

image

The NCR Ranger on the cover of Fallout: New Vegas is the baddest-looking dude in videogames and if you want to look just like him, "aspiring prop designer" Jai Norman is here to show you how.

Halloween is a long way off but if you're looking to dress up as your favorite New California Republic tough guy, you might want to get going on it now. It took Norman, who seems to have some idea what he's doing, more than a month to put this thing together, after all. But the final result clearly demonstrates that it was time well spent.

The level of detail that's gone into this outfit is just fantastic. From the battle-scarred pre-war LAPD riot armor to the holes torn into the shoulder of the duster and even the kill marks on the helmet, it's an incredibly accurate recreation of the imposing NCR ranger on the cover of New Vegas. The only significant difference is the number on the helmet; Norman said he's a fan of the original Fallout games and thus made a point of putting the number 13 on his headgear.

My favorite part of the build, oddly enough, is actually a supporting prop off-handedly wedged into the middle of the process: a New Calfornia Republic flag cobbled together from two real-world California flags and a stencil, which I think gives it a very authentic flavor. For those who want to take a stab at making one of their very own, Norman was kind enough to post numerous photos of the building process, along with some great shots of the finished outfit, in a long thread on the Replica Prop Forum. Good luck - I think you might need it.

It looks decent enough, but needs some work.

The NCR ranger looks badass... but somehow it looks more badass in real life.

Quite possibly one of the most badass costumes I've ever seen. And I like how he referenced the original Fallout.

want! want! want! want! want! want! want! want! want! want!

thatd totally be my halloween costume this year!

Was the NCR Ranger Helmet always green?

That looks gob-smackingly awesome. I;ve never seen anything like it outside the game.

Had to scroll down quite a bit to find the flag, but it was worth it! I won't spoil it for you, but needless to say, the radiation was NOT kind to the Golden State.

o that is a spectacular piece. The attention to detail is fantastic. and that it doesnt look "plastic" at the end is just swell.

Like what?

To be fair: The Angle and the lightning in the picture are very benevolent, because you can'T see stuff properly. In Addition the Armor is fairly easy on the eye: A metal helm, a gas mask and a trench coat.

Surely an impressive piece of cosplay, but nothing more if you ask me.
Call me in when he built a full enclave-power-armor, rotating fen included. Then I will be impressed.

Whoa.. that looks quite... Epic

Id love to see some Aurelius of Phoenix Armor or even the Space Suit from REPCONN...
<.< >.> should that have been in spoilers?? 0.0

But if anything I kinda Want a New California Republic Flag ^____^

Yes. The Combat Ranger Armor is actually a prototype armor developed by the pre-war American military code named the "Hermes armor". This would replace the aging Adv. Combat Armor MK I & II which were reserved for military and special forces respectively.

How did the NCR get it? Well.... California has a lot of military armories and contains west tek among other military science facilities. This gives NCR the most advanced weaponry available to the pre-war Americans.

I wonder if they accept first born children as payment...

That picture you provided was kinda meh but I was blown away by the pictures I found on that forum.

Pretty good work right there.

The photo was a tough call. It doesn't show off the full outfit in all its glory but I really like the pose and lighting. Artistically speaking, I think it's the best of the bunch, so I went with it.

Here's the suit in far better detail, for those who don't want to hit the link and dig through the entire thread:

Apparently it's not quite done yet; Norman's had it out on the town but said there's still a little bit of tweaking and detail work he wants to take care of.

The Shoulders need a little more support, to keep shape, the helmet is a little high and the angle of the goggles is a tiny tiny bit wonky, otherwise its very very very very very good.

also...

OMG ESCAPIST STAFF RESPONDED TO ME :D

Those are pretty microscopic nits, dude. I'll grant you the shoulder thing, it'd be easy enough to pad those out to give it a more hulking look, but I think the helmet is pretty much dead-on.

I wish police departments actually wore things like that.

Certainly bad-ass, at least the image featured on the Escapist. The rest are a bit meh, but I heard it's a work in progress still?

On a tenuously related note, I'm getting a real urge for a New California Republic t-shirt.

If I made something like this, I would probably never even take the thing off.

No, not even to sleep.

I would eat my breakfast through the helmet.

I want one.

Cooool! Now do the Centurion armor!!!

Wow that is amazing. Now if police nowadays dressed like that I'm sure we wouldn't seeing anymore crime for awhile

EDIT

Just saw the flag he made from the california state flag, damn its good. State of Califonia make this your new flag now.

No kidding, the trench coat really needs to be more of a... sturdy material(or Antimaterial, see what I did there?). The helmet is really well done, hopefully there isn't clipping issue when he puts something on his back.

Anti-Materiel, dear, note the E, it is not a typo. <3

I was blinded by the awesome. Had to wait a full ten minutes before I could type this post.

I really wish I could make a video game costume. I always wanted to make Isaac Clarke's suit and got particularly incensed when I saw that Dead Space 2's collector's edition comes with a plasma cutter.

Starch it and it should look better.
Starche?
Startch?
not sure on that one.
