The Awards Season Can Begin: Razzie Nominations Announced

The nominees have been announced, and The Last Airbender and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse have the best odds of winning a Golden Raspberry award for 2010.

Awarding what its website calls "Dis-Honors for Worst Achievements in Film" since 1980, the Razzie Awards are one step ahead of the Oscars. The Golden Raspberry nominations and awards both take place the day before the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announce their yearly honorees, ushering in awards season for the best and the worst of the year in film. The honorees for 2010 have been announced, with The Last Airbender and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse both leading the way with 9 nominations, each film recognized in almost every category.

Worst picture nominees include The Bounty Hunter, The Last Airbender, Sex and the City 2, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, and the Twilight-inspired parody Vampires Suck. Worst actor nods go to Jack Black for Gulliver's Travels, Gerard Butler for The Bounty Hunter, and Ashton Kutcher, Taylor Lautner, and Robert Pattinson for two films apiece: Kutcher for Killers and Valentine's Day, Lautner for Eclipse and Valentine's Day, and Pattinson for Eclipse and Remember Me.

Rounding out the big three categories are the worst actress nominees: Jennifer Aniston for both The Bounty Hunter and The Switch, Kristen Stewart for Eclipse, Megan Fox for Jonah Hex, Miley Cyrus for The Last Song, and all four Sex and the City stars (Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis, and Cynthia Nixon) for Sex and the City 2.

Other categories include worst director, worst screen couple/ screen ensemble, worst screenplay, worst prequel, remake, rip-off, or sequel, and worst supporting actor and actress. This year's special category is "Worst Eye-Gouging Mis-Use of 3-D;" I'm putting my money on Cats and Dogs 2: Revenge of Kitty Galore.

"Worst Eye-Gouging Misuse of 3D," eh? Personally, I would give that award to any and all films which incorporate 3D. I can't stand it; it's put me off of so many movies that I could have been interested in seeing otherwise.

Plus in the few times I've tried to watch 3D media, I've received a headache that can only be described as "soul-crushing".

Yeah, what he said.

The only movies I'll suffer through 3D for are Pixar movies. Otherwise 3D will cause me to not watch your film.

Hmm... how come their aren't any razzies for videogames?

Elizabeth Grunewald:
...worst prequel, remake, rip-off...

Ahh. I get it now...if videogames were to do this sort of thing there would be less chuckling and more steam coming out of peoples ears...still one can imagine...

Its is nice to see my hate rewarded.

Here's hoping Twilight sweeps them all.

I'm so happy to see these "exceptional" movies given exactly what they deserve, and I'm glad that awards like this exist to punish these sorts of movies.

hey - I liked The Bounty Hunter

now what does that say?

I sure hope The Last Airbender win the awards! I want to see M. Night Shyamalan reaction and if possibly a speech for receiving it!

Very good choices this year :D They're all winners in my book! (Or losers?)

This but at the same time I feel for my friends who are fans of the tv series that that monster was somehow created from... D:

It's not surprising that they put the Expendables on there for Worst Director for Stallone considering the fact they gave Worst Star of the Century.

My money is on Airbender taking most of them though I give the worst couple to Twilight.

Worst Director--Stallone, for The Expendables. God I hope he gets one. That would be freaking hilarious. Worst screen ensemble had me laughing in that "Josh Brolin's Face and Megan Fox's accent" was the actual reason. Holy Hell that's hilarious.

I wonder if they can add a category for biggest let down: Worst... The Warrior's Way deserves the recognition.

"What a twist!"

Twilight seems to get ripped on a lot. I wonder if there are legitimate critical reasons for that or if it's just satire on their part.

The Last Airbender should win worst picture consider what it might have done to a good franchise. I don't have anything to back this up, but I heard we got this movie instead of an epilogue for the first series. Part of it would explain what happened to Zuko's mother. At least it didn't seem to hurt the second series.

The Twilight series is already mocked as it is. It would be like winning the award for fattest kid in fat camp.

I honestly don't see Eclipse taking too many of the awards. Maybe worst couple, that's about it. I see The Last Airbender sweeping most of the awards, truthfully, just given the amount of bile this movie produced and the fact the movie may have single-handedly ruined M. Night Shyamalan's directing career beyond repair.

While I generally agree with you that 3D is poorly handled and rarely adds anything to the film, I know of ONE exception, the Pixar short Day and Night (it came with Toy Story 3) because it was made FOR 3D with it's unique idea, not just WITH 3D.

I not sure a the only good 3D film is a Pixar short is a good or bad thing.

OT: Heres a non-existant vote towards Airbender getting the big prize.

Possibly, but look what Sandra Bullock did last year.

I think it failed so hard in England because he didn't take notice of what certain cultural groups will make of the line "'Benders, to me!"

BabyRaptor:
Here's hoping Twilight sweeps them all.

I'll drink to that.

A nonalcoholic drink of course.

... That you're an awful human being. Kidding, we're all allowed or guilty pleasures.

But not allowed to dislike Scott Pilgrim, trust me I've been flamed for it.

Very pleased to see Last Airbender in its rightful place, cause that movie was god awful.

lol first comment I see aligns with my intended comment: any movie using 3-D should get a Razzie certification or a little medal or something...for sucking

I hope Friedberg and Selzman take home their first Razzie. I've been wanting them to get one of these since Date Movie. I'm also hoping Megan Fox, Jack Black, and Cats & Dogs 2 "win" their respective categories, and that The Bounty Hunter doesn't "win" one.

Twilight or the abomination that attempted to "spoof" it both up for Razzies? Has there ever been a tie before? And can the winners win cyanide instead? Please?!?

I haven't seen The Last Airbender, but anything with M. Night's name on it should be immediately thrown into a burning pit of fire after his unrelenting cinematographic catastrophes.

Sex in the City 2 just seems so insulting that it gives me a bit of an upset stomach just thinking about the premise.

Megan Fox was AWFUL in Jonah Hex (all 10 minutes that I could stand), but I think that Jonah Hex's horrendous makeup job exacerbated the agonizing experience.

And Jennifer Aniston? She. Cannot. Act. Period. Why is Hollywood even letting her within spitting distance of working in a cafe to serve people who have anything to do with the production of movies? One would think that any casting director who was not a benighted imbecile would recognize that Aniston plays her Friends role in each of her films.

This is the only problem that I see with the Gerald Butler/The Bounty Hunter nominations: The fatal flaw was Jennifer Aniston! The movie could have been decent if they found a better female lead who did not make killing baby seals a preferable form of entertainment than watching her wretch all over the screen.

The Killers was quite similar except Kutcher and Heigel (Not sure how to spell that) were both miserable to watch and the overall thing was just... argh....

I think that for the sake of our future, goofy romantic comedy spy/merc/secret identity films should be outright banned like poorly done 3D exploitation.

Icehearted:

The special effects are horrid, the actors have no range, the script is poorly written and director seems as if he is doing it purely for the paycheck.

The Oscars were firstly given out to people who deserved them, now its a popularity contest. Its ironic that the Razzies, while ridiculing the industry, has the exact same goal the Oscars originally did. Its funny that something no one really takes as serious has more gravitas and respectability.

Don't get me wrong ,The Last Airbender is a horrible movie, but this was just a one shot movie for a fallen creator director to try to cash in on an already awesome series.

ECLIPSE on the other hand is just pure pain in all writing, and cinema possible, and is based on something just as bad! And we're getting MORE of them in the future!

BabyRaptor:

I dunno, M. Night. Shyamalan really outdid himself here.
While nothing can top the sheer idiocy of the plot to The Happening (Holy Hell even the title sucks), at least the movie had its entertaining moments ("You're after the secret recipe for my lemon drink!").

The Last Airbender is such a perfect example of exactly how NOT to tell a story that I think it should be textbook. It was about as interesting as reading a newspaper while waiting at the doctor's office and the only thing on TV is a Thai-Chi video.

Can't believe I'm saying this, but as vapid, idiotic and boring as the Twilight "Saga" is, there's no contesting Shyamalan's ability to take a GOOD cartoon's plot and characters, then re-script it to be the most hideously pointless thing ever (well, 2nd most pointless but I won't get into that).
That is to say: Twilight: Eclispse never stooped to making 90% of its dialogue self-imposed exposition.

While we're on the subject of Razzies, might I suggest a new honorary category?

Most Bullshit Preview/Trailer For a Movie

Case in point: The trailers for both The Last Airbender and Twilight: Eclipse were misleading to the point of fraud. Twilight's trailer prominently featured the "Werewolf vs Vampires" scene and tried desperately to fool the audience into thinking anything actually happens in that film.
Airbender just flat out deleted half of the cool shit that was in the trailer; most of the trailer footage was created by an entirely different firm than the ones who shot the fucking movie! And it was much better.
Talk about a bait and switch!

Which one is worse? Hmm. Tough category.
I'll let you make the call, but I'm going with Airbender.
Why? Because nobody was fooled by Twilight. Nobody should be at this point.
But the Last Airbender at least had the potential to be GOOD.
