Will Smith, Jay-Z Remaking Movie Musical Annie

Smith's daughter, "Whip My Hair" singer Willow Smith, will star in a remake of the 1982 musical film.

Actor Will Smith (Independence Day, Hancock) and rapper Jay-Z have collaborated before, co-producing the Broadway Fela!, which went on to win three Tony Awards. The pair are looking to repeat their success with the musical theatre genre, remaking 1982's Annie, a film based on the 1977 musical of the same name. The film, which marks the first feature film collaboration between the two, is being imagined as a star vehicle for Smith's 10-year-old daughter, Willow. Jay-Z has already invested in Willow's musical career; his record label Roc Nation produced her certified platinum single, "Whip My Hair."

Deadline quotes the official press release, which in turn quotes Columbia Pictures President Doug Belgrad as saying, "The time is right to bring back Annie to the big screen. Of course, we're true believers in Willow's talent and believe she will be perfect in this role. Combining Willow with the Overbrook team that reimagined Karate Kid and the spectacular Jay-Z makes this a dream project." The 1982 film featured Albert Finney, Carol Burnett, Tim Curry, and Bernadette Peters; I have no doubt that Smith and Jay-Z will be able to accumulate the same star power for this remake.

Jay-Z is already familiar with at least one of the musical's best known songs; in 1999, he sampled the orphan anthem "It's a Hard Knock Life" for his song "Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)."

F____ NO!

I'm actually all right with this. Just don't let Smith's daughter play the part. Good God "Whip My Hair" is a travesty to music.

OHHHHHH! WILLOW Smith! Dam it Liz!
The Big question is: Will they die her afro red?

Goddamn it Jay-Zed, it's not the same without a creepy ginger kid.

Anything Jay-Z touches turns to gold! I'll be watching this progress with great interest.

Ok, firstly... FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-!!!!!!!!!!!

I can remember losing out on playing "Annie" in a professional touring production when I was about 10-11, because my hair wasn't red enough. ;( Still, it'll be interesting to see if the girl can actually sing...?

'Scuse me while I wander off sobbing to myself... and singing "Tomorrow" quietly whilst curled up in a ball, rocking...

More over will they give her "white" freckles?

This is monstrous
I have no other thoughts on the matter

Oh, well this doesn't seem so bad! I guess that...

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Seriously, why is he trying to make his children so popular? My parents didn't force me into anything. Doesn't he realize this could seriously mess them up?

It's official. Hollywood is now pretty much running on pure stupid cut with wheat grass farts. I present this project as exhibit #37,034.

Really? Out of all the movies Will Smith has been in, you chose Independence Day and Hancock?

Why?!

Why?!

WHY?!

I do enjoy how its stated in the article "is being imagined as a star vehicle for Smith's 10-year-old daughter, Willow."

Is it just me or does anyone else see this becoming some horrible ghetto remake? Only thing that could make this worse is if Tyler Perry touches it.

I heard somewhere that she whips her hair from side to side. Could be bad info, though

Maybe Tim Curry will eat her.

They all float down here. They all float.....

well if it does at least we will have something to watch like another Lindsey Lohan

You'd rather she brought up Jersey Girl?

Also, those just happen to be Will's two highest grossing flicks (814M, 624M, respectively), so there's that.

No.

Nonononono.

You do not let Jay-Z within the same universe as a project like this. The musical is a product of its era, and if you are going to do it, the only way to do it is to try and retain that sense of timelessness all of the best musicals have.

You do not put rap into it. Rap will destroy it. (You know, originally I typed rap will date it there but then the more appropriate and correct sentence occured to me.)

Ugh. This has fail written all over it, just like The Karate Kid with his son.

Look, will, we know you're talented. Really, we do. But that doesnt mean your kids are.

More over, while they make her play in white face.

I know, that sounds horrible, but lets face it, there's no Daddy Warbucks figures in the Ghetto.

I like Will Smith.. but this is not a tale that needs to be remade.. And trying to be sensative here, but Annie is all about a little red headed girl, thats the essence of the movie and plays and musicals and.. I am ok with reimaging.. but this is just wrong. Are we 100% out of movies?

>implying the urbanized, modernized, ill-conceived remake of 30+ year old film adaptation of a 40+ year old musical exhibits blatant neglect for the source material and appears doomed to fail.

Green text? In MY Escapist? It's more likely than you think.

Ugh why?

On occasion I feel spoiled. I feel like my life is served to me on a silver platter by my parents. Like I'm a lame, irresponsible parody of the middle class suburban kid who will never ever know what it's like to work for what I have. Then I look at Will Smith's kids.

Will Smith, buddy, you're a great actor, versatile and all that.
But, pimping out movies for your kids... eh. I, I don't know. It doesn't fly with me.

Maybe you have to accept that your kids aren't as talented as you.

First they rape my childhood memory with the Karte Kid remake and then proceed to kill Annie?! I...i..don't know what to say. I'm shellshocked.

What is this, I don't even?

Oh god no, note to Will Smith, stop forcing your children on us, we are beginning to hate them. Especially Willow for the abomination of a song.

YOU FOOL! Don't jinx it!

And so Life now seems to have an expiration date...

I'm curious to see how many of the folks here raving and ranting have actually seen the film or the stage play - or are just being negative on principle.

>Implying Jay-Z plays 'music'
>Implying implications

Yes yes, I know this will earn me the burning rage of a thousand white hot blinding suns of hateful fury and possibly a suspension, but it:
1. Looks really neat
2. Will confuse a few people
3. Brings my point across.
Also, WHY?!
WHY THIS?!?!

Willow should go die and this movie should NEVER BE MADE! You can't do Annie without a creepy ginger kid!

I'll fucking whip YOUR hair ya dumb bitch!

Apparently, "the spectacular Jay-Z" made a "spectacular song".

In related news, please get a thesaurus and a sense of proportion. Neither the song nor the artist are "spectacular".

(IMHO, of course).
